Bridge project points to the future of arts festivals

Global art and design duo Craig & Karl are returning to their hometown for the Brisbane Festival, transforming three of the city's bridges with their colourful palette.
Craig Redman and Karl Maier will design artworks for Brisbane's Neville Bonner, Goodwill, and Kangaroo Point bridges as part of a project titled ANZ's Walk This Way.
With naming rights granted to a big four bank, it is one of several attractions on the 2025 slate with prominent corporate backing - another is a fireworks display marking the opening weekend, titled Riverfire by Australian Retirement Trust.
It's part of artistic director Louise Bezzina's sixth and final festival, which features a slate of more than 1000 performances.
Of those, 475 are free to the public, even as production costs continue to increase.
With the hunt for the next artistic director underway, Bezzina says corporate support is vital to the future of the festival, along with philanthropic and government backing.
"I don't feel like there's any artistic compromise," she said.
"In fact without it, it simply wouldn't be possible to deliver a program of this scale, and particularly with the amount of free programming."
Corporate partnerships are on brand for Craig & Karl, who are these days based in New York and London, and have worked with companies such as Nike, Apple, Google, Vogue, and LVMH.
The duo is also presenting a citywide art trail and an exhibition at the Griffith University Art Museum.
Over 23 days, the Brisbane Festival will feature the work of 2260 artists.
At the launch of the program on Wednesday, burlesque performer Bettie Bombshell played with fire in a preview of cabaret show Gatsby at the Green Light.
There was also a sneak peek at The Lovers, a pop-music reinterpretation of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, directed by Brisbane company Shake & Stir's artistic director Nick Skubij.
On the dance slate, renowned French choreographer Benjamin Millepied is staging three works with LA Dance Project, the triptych Gems, commissioned by luxury brand Van Cleef & Arpels.
Bangarra Dance Theatre founder Stephen Page also returns to his hometown with Baleen Moondjan, which will be staged on a barge on the Brisbane River among a set of giant whalebones.
Free offerings also include the mass attractions of a drone display titled Skylore, and a trail of candlelit artworks at the City Botanic Gardens.
Yet in the background, Australian cultural festivals are being staged in an increasingly politicised environment, according to Bezzina.
"Art is inherently political and it's a really difficult and challenging area to navigate," she said.
"I don't have any answers for you, but I hope we can lean into a more compassionate place, that allows us to navigate through this really tumultuous time."
Brisbane Festival runs from September 5-27, with tickets on sale from Wednesday.

The most scathing nickname however was "Kim Jong" for a certain colleague who "only got the job [because] of their dad". Another profane nickname was "contagious" for a colleague you "give... a job, takes the c**t ages". Karl didn't reveal which coworkers he was referring to in the post. The controversial post comes after it was revealed Stefanovic was vying for another plum Nine role. In May, insiders at the network revealed the veteran journalist wants to replace Australian actor Rodger Corser as host of hit trivia game show The Floor Australia. The show has proved popular with audiences and broke records when it premiered on April 28 with a total national reach of 2.22 million viewers. Stefanovic wants to host the program after he featured in a promo for the prime time hit ahead of its premiere, sources told It's said Karl thinks he is better suited to hosting the program than Corser, who secured the gig in October 2024. The Floor follows the popular Dutch version of the show, which was then emulated in the US, featuring 80s American actor Rob Lowe. When it premiered, the Australian iteration even topped Nine's A Current Affair, which recorded a much lower total TV national audience of 1,147,000.

Men should not have friends. At least that's what Friendship, the black comedy starring Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson, suggests. In the film, Craig (Robinson), is a slightly awkward suburban dad who meets his neighbour, Austin (Rudd). At first, the friendship flourishes – Austin even invites Craig to a gathering with his other male friends. But Craig becomes increasingly over-invested in the friendship, pushing further and further until the relationship completely fractures. Directed by Andrew DeYoung, the storyline is extreme, but it still explores a question many men have likely pondered at some point: Why is it so challenging to make friends with other men? It largely depends on how they've been raised, says Integrated Way relationship counselling specialist Daniel Lichtman. Many, particularly those in western cultures, are taught early on to be more emotionally contained and task-oriented rather than relationship-oriented. 'Many men don't necessarily seek out a relationship for the sake of having a relationship,' he says. 'When men are struggling, they're less likely to reach out to a friend for connection because they often feel more shame and embarrassment in vulnerability than women.' Instead, many opt for 'going at it alone', Lichtman says. It's a pattern of behaviour that appears to be getting worse. In 1990, 55 per cent of men told the Survey Centre on American Life that they had at least six close friends, but in 2021, that dropped to 27 per cent. Meanwhile, one in seven men say they have no close friends. Popular Australian men's forums suggest a similar trend locally. This isn't for a lack of opportunity. There are ample avenues for men to make new friends, says Lichtman, such as sports clubs and men's walking groups. Admission numbers also indicate plenty are actively taking part.
