The renewal comes a day after the network announced that The Chi's Season 7 opener drew two million cross-platform viewers, making it the most-streamed season premiere in the series' history — up +2% versus last season.
'With the seventh season of The Chi, [series creator] Lena Waithe raised the bar creatively and it shattered viewership records, becoming the most-watched season premiere in the show's history,' Chris McCarthy, President of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, said in a statement regarding the premiere numbers. 'Lena's storytelling defies convention and cuts through cliché, revealing the depth, power and complexity of life on the South Side of Chicago with fearless honesty.'
The show opened its Season 8 writers' room in February, months before Season 7 premiered.
The Chi is a coming-of-age story about a group of residents on the South Side of Chicago who become 'linked by coincidence but bonded by the need for connection and redemption.'
The ensemble cast includes Jacob Latimore (as Emmett), Lynn Whitfield (Alicia), Yolonda Ross (Jada), Shamon Brown Jr. (Papa), Michael V. Epps (Jake), Birgundi Baker (Kiesha) and Luke James (Trig).

AHSOKA's Ezra Bridger Actor Shows Off Lightsaber Skills in New Video — GeekTyrant

Eman Esfandi is proving he's more than ready to wield a lightsaber again in Ahsoka Season 2. The actor, who brought the live-action version of Ezra Bridger to life in the first season, recently shared a video on social media showcasing his impressive lightsaber moves—and it has fans hyped for what's coming next. Esfandi posted the clip on Instagram with the caption: "This little light(saber) of mine, I'm gonna let it shine." Following an outpouring of excitement from fans, he added: "Y'all got me hyped up thank you for the love, may the force be with you." Filming for Ahsoka season 2 is already underway, something Esfandi himself confirmed back in March when he reposted an Instagram story from the set. More recently, co-star Ivanna Sakhno revealed the series is 'in the middle of filming,' teasing that the new season will be 'bigger' and 'even more in-depth.' The second season of Ahsoka was announced in January 2024, but cameras didn't start rolling until March 2025. Story details are still under wraps, but fans can expect some major payoffs after that season 1 cliffhanger. We last saw Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) and Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) stranded after helping Ezra escape Peridea, while Grand Admiral Thrawn ( Lars Mikkelsen) began his ominous return to power. If that's not enough to get you excited, Hayden Christensen is confirmed to return as Anakin Skywalker after his brief but memorable appearance in season 1. Christensen even dropped out of a recent Comic-Con appearance due to overnight shoots, which could hint at a bigger role for the Jedi legend this time around. On top of that, Admiral Ackbar is set to appear and will apparently go head-to-head with Thrawn, which sounds like an epic showdown in the making. Ahsoka Season 2 doesn't have a release date yet.

The Golden Bachelor's Mel Owens Offers Mea Culpa for ‘Insensitive' Comments About Older Women: ‘I've Learned a Lot'

The new star of The Golden Bachelor was a little tarnished by recent comments he made about dating older women, but he's trying to make amends. In a new interview with Glamour, Mel Owens — who is set to star in the second season of ABC's senior dating competition — confronts the backlash he received when he said in a podcast interview in June that he'd eliminate any contestants age 60 or older. (Owens is 66, for the record.) More from TVLine Matt Damon and Ken Jennings Risk It All on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire - But Did They Win Big? ABC Moves Up Premiere Date for 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Nashville and Grey's Anatomy Joshua Jackson Admits He's 'Bummed Out' by Doctor Odyssey Cancellation: 'It Was a Really Fun Show' Owens is now backtracking on those comments, saying they 'were a mistake by me. It's unfair. It's insensitive… and I want to earn it back.' Owens is currently two weeks into shooting his season of The Golden Bachelor, and he reveals he apologized to the women as well: 'When I first walked in, I addressed it. I apologized to them. I said, 'It was unfair, insensitive. I want to earn it back. Just give me the chance.'' The women on Owens' season are in their 60s, he says, and he was 'absolutely shocked' at how 'active' and 'brilliant' they are. (ABC has not yet revealed the women competing in Mel's season.) They also got a little revenge on him, he hints: 'One of the dates was a roast. It was brutal. They were killing me… It was good because I earned that, and I took it and I deserved it, and it landed squarely on me.' Owens blames his controversial comments on his lack of familiarity with the show: 'I didn't know the age range because I wasn't watching it. I'm thinking, to me, the age range was 45 to 60. That's my age range. I'm thinking that's the gold years for me.' He also says he preferred younger women because 'my reference… was when I was dating at 39, 40. I hadn't dated in 26 years, so I had no clue.' He hopes fans who wrote off the show after his comments will give it another chance: 'Hopefully the show will show that the women that are in their golden years, that are doing these amazing things. It's inspirational.' The experience so far has been 'life-altering' for him, he adds: 'I've learned a lot.' Owens' season of The Golden Bachelor premieres Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 8/7c on ABC.
