Rahul, Kharge, write to PM Modi, urge legislation to grant statehood to J-K
According to a PTI report, Gandhi and Kharge also urged the Centre to put forth a legislation that will bring the Union Territory of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
In their letter to PM Modi, Congress leaders claimed that the people of Jammu and Kashmir, for the past five years, have constantly called for the full restoration of statehood, which was removed after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.

The leaders added that the demand of the Jammu and Kashmir people is both legitimate and firmly grounded in their constitutional and democratic rights. In the letter, the two leaders argued, "It is important to recognise that while there have been instances of Union Territories being granted statehood in the past, the case of Jammu and Kashmir is without precedent in independent India. This is the first time a full-fledged state has been downgraded to a Union Territory following its bifurcation."
Drawing references from the statements made by PM Modi on several occasions, the Congress leaders in their letter said, "Your goodself has, on multiple occasions, personally reiterated the government's commitment to restoring statehood."
Citing PM Modi's interview in Bhubaneswar in May 2024, the statement said he had asserted that the restoration of statehood was a solemn promise the government had made and stood by.
It further added that in a rally in Srinagar in 2024, PM Modi reaffirmed that the Centre in Parliament said that it will restore region's statehood.

CM says Karnataka will take up issue of GST notices to small traders with Centre
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday said the State government will take up with the Centre the issue of small traders getting GST notices from the Commercial Taxes Department for transactions through UPI. He also made it clear that the issue would be discussed with the State Commercial Taxes Department before making a decision in this regard. 'The Goods and Sales Tax (GST) Council comes under the purview of the Centre. However, the State government will take up the matter with the Union government and discuss it with the State's Commercial Taxes Department, and take a decision,' Mr. Siddaramaiah told presspersons in Mysuru. It may be noted that a section of the small and micro traders in the State have taken exception to getting notices with respect to taxes based on their transactions via UPI. Meanwhile, asking the small traders not to worry about the GST-related notices, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar accused the Union government of creating trouble for small traders and street vendors by introducing GST. 'Notices are being issued to those who are conducting business of over ₹40 lakh,' he said in Hoskote, near here, where an event was organised to distribute government benefits. He said: 'This is the achievement of the Union government. The traders do not have to worry. We will take necessary actions to protect their interests.' The Deputy Chief Minister said though the State had appealed to the Centre several times seeking funds over the last two years, the BJP MPs are not speaking. 'They are not concerned about the poor in the State.' Accusing the BJP of not doing enough, he said that the Congress government was committed to getting Yettinahole waters to Bengaluru North district before 2027 and the government had decided to prepare a DPR to bring metro to Hoskote. 'We will ensure it is approved during our term.' Mr. Shivakumar also pointed out that the government had taken steps to regularise B-khata properties in Bengaluru, and that over a crore patta khatas are being given to Scheduled Tribes.

‘Will teach you a lesson': NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar booked for shouting at Mumbai cop
NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar was booked on the charge of obstructing public servants in discharging duty after he shouted at a sub-inspector inside a police station here while trying to meet a party worker injured in a clash, an official said on Sunday. A viral video shows Rohit Pawar, grandnephew of NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, yelling at the sub-inspector in Marathi, 'Keep your voice down, keep your voice down. If you raise your hand, I will teach you a lesson'. The incident unfolded after Rohit Pawar had gone to Azad Maidan police station in south Mumbai along with NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad to meet an injured party worker following a clash in the Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan building between supporters of Awhad and BJP legislator Gopichand Padalkar on Thursday. After the clash, members of both groups were detained inside the Vidhan Bhavan and were eventually handed over to the police. Based on a complaint, a case has been registered against Rohit Pawar for allegedly obstructing public servants in discharging duty, an official said. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, meanwhile, expressed his displeasure at Rohit Pawar's behaviour, saying such conduct by a few leaders maligns the image of all public representatives. 'Many people and even journalists are saying that they (MLAs) have started thinking themselves too smart and think that they are above the law. When a few public representatives behave wrongly, everyone gets blamed,' he told reporters in Pune when asked about the viral video of his nephew Rohit Pawar. Earlier in the day, the Pune Guardian Minister chaired a meeting of officials of various departments. 'No public representative, including myself, should behave in such a manner. We must act in accordance with the tradition of cultured Maharashtra, keeping in mind the Constitution and the rule of law laid by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, and the teachings of the late Yashwantrao Chavan,' Ajit Pawar added.
