Harbhajan Singh, Pathan Brothers Pull Out Of WCL Game Vs Pakistan: Reports

News1821 hours ago
Harbhajan Singh has withdrawn from the World Championship of Legends game against Pakistan amid to public backlash.
Harbhajan Singh, Ifran Pathan and Yusuf Pathan have reportedly withdrawn their names from the upcoming World Championship of Legends (WCL) game against Pakistan, after facing severe public backlash. Multiple reports suggest that he has made the decision considering the sour political relations between the country after the Pahalgam attack.
India and Pakistan don't play bilateral cricket against each other. There were calls to end all multi-national tournament meetings between the two, as well, after the Pahalgam attack and the ensuing cross-border escalation that saw several Indian lives lost.
'My heart goes out to family members of all those who lost their lives in the dastardly attack. This can't be forgiven," Harbhajan wrote at the time.
The current head coach, Gautam Gambhir, was one of many who asked India to cut all ties, bilateral or not, with the neighbors. Whereas, the India Champions captain in WCL, Yuvraj Singh, Shikhar Dhawan and others engaged in social media wars with the likes of Shahid Afridi over their anti-India commentary.
The same cricketers became the centre of public anger after it was revealed that Afridi was part of the Pakistani team. Some reports suggest that other Indian cricketers might pull out from the tournament, too.
What is WCL and who owns it?
The league is co-owned by rapper and artist Harshit Tomar and Bollywood star Ajay Devgan. The league's website mentions Tomar as the CEO, while both have been seen together in promotional events.
India's WCL Squad
Shikhar Dhawan, Robin Uthappa (WK), Ambati Rayudu, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh (C), Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, Stuart Binny, Vinay Kumar, Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla, Siddarth Kaul, Abhimanyu Mithun and Varun Aaron
Who are the other participants?
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) doesn't allow contracted or active Indian men's cricketers to participate in such private leagues (except state-association ones) in the country or outside. Hence, these 'Legends' leagues — there are several of them — contract retired cricketers from all around the globe.

Trouble mounts for Team India as Akash Deep, Arshdeep injured ahead of fourth Test; Anshul Kamboj added to squad

New Delhi [India], July 20 (ANI): India's build-up to the crucial fourth Test against England at Old Trafford has been dented by injuries to two of their seamers, Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh. With both bowlers likely to miss the Manchester Test starting July 23, the selectors have drafted in Haryana's promising fast bowler Anshul Kamboj as cover for the final two matches of the five-Test series, as per ESPNcricinfo. Arshdeep, who is yet to make his Test debut, hurt his bowling hand during a training session in Beckenham on Thursday. He was seen having his hand taped after what looked like a follow-through injury. Earlier in the session, the left-arm quick said, "I'll bowl a lot today, cover all the work of a week, and then go and shop," as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. Later, he walked off, clearly in discomfort. It's unclear whether the injury required stitches. Meanwhile, Akash Deep is nursing a groin niggle, compounding India's concerns. The right-arm seamer was instrumental in India squaring the series in Birmingham with a 10-wicket match haul. However, in the Lord's Test, he looked off-colour, managing just one wicket and even walking off on Day 4 for treatment, though the exact nature of that issue wasn't confirmed then. India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate acknowledged Arshdeep's injury would affect team planning, and the latest setback with Akash Deep only adds to the headache. With the series on the line and England leading 2-1, all eyes now turn to Jasprit Bumrah's availability. Ten Doeschate had earlier hinted that India would be "leaning towards" playing Bumrah in Manchester, though that would depend on factors like the weather and overall bowling fitness. Mohammed Siraj, who has shouldered the bulk of the pace workload, having played all three Tests so far, will also need careful workload management. Prasidh Krishna, who featured in the first two Tests, remains an option along with Shardul Thakur, who played the opening Test in Leeds as a bowling allrounder. Into this mix comes 24-year-old Anshul Kamboj, a right-arm seamer known for his ability to hit the deck hard and generate skiddy bounce. He was part of the India A squad earlier this summer and impressed in the second unofficial Test in Northampton, claiming four wickets, including two in one over. Not just with the ball, Kamboj also showed his grit with the bat, stitching an unbeaten 149-run partnership with Tanush Kotian in the same match. Kamboj's domestic record also speaks for itself. He picked up 34 wickets in six matches during the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy, finished as the leading wicket-taker in the 2024-25 Duleep Trophy, and created history by becoming only the third Indian to take all ten wickets in an innings against Kerala. His consistent performances have now earned him a well-deserved Test call-up. (ANI)

WI vs AUS: Mitchell Marsh to play as specialist batter, bowling remains ‘offline'

Mitchell Marsh has confirmed he will play as a specialist batter in Australia's upcoming T20I series against the West Indies. The 33-year-old has not bowled since the Test series against India and has only bowled once - during an ODI against England at Lord's in September also didn't bowl in any of his 13 matches for the Lucknow Super Giants during the 2025 IPL season. In the West Indies T20Is, he will open the batting alongside Jake Fraser-McGurk, who returns to the squad in place of the injured Spencer the bowling's offline and we'll just see where that gets to. But looking forward to just playing as a batsman for the moment,' Marsh said. Of the players who featured in Australia's 3-0 Test series win, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Alex Carey will not take part in the limited-overs series. Marsh said their absence creates an opportunity for emerging talents to step up and showcase their skills."First and foremost, it's always 'we're representing Australia, we're here to win the series' and culturally, that's how we want to go about it. There will be guys that get opportunities. We've obviously got a few guys missing for this series [for] a well-earned rest. We'll see guys bat in different positions and get opportunities in certain positions,' Marsh added. Amongst the newcomers, Mitchell Owen is set to make his debut in the opening T20I on July 20 (July 21 in India) at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica. Owen played a key role in the Hobart Hurricanes' title-winning campaign in the 2024-25 Big Bash League, including scoring a century in the final. Attention will also be on rising talents like Cooper Connolly and others eager to make their squad for West Indies T20Is Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Ben Dwarshius, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitch Owen, Adam Zampa- Ends
