BBC 'scrutinised over differing treatment of stars accused of offensive language'
BBC bosses have been called out after MasterChef presenter John Torode appeared to receive harsher punishment than EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick over use of offensive language Bosses at the BBC face a grilling over why John Torode and Jamie Borthwick were treated 'differently' after both stars used 'offensive language'. MasterChef star Torode, 59, was sacked by the broadcasting giant after a complaint John used " highly offensive racist language" was upheld. John denies the incident, which he says he has no recollection of. EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick, 31, was suspended in June after 19 years playing fan favourite character Jay Brown when he was accused of using a slur targeted at disabled people while on the set of Strictly Come Dancing. However, now executives at the BBC are facing questions over why the pair have differences in their treatment with Torode losing his job entirely, while Borthwick faced a suspension. A source has said:"The difference in treatment between John and Jamie - for very similar incidents - has left questions to be answered. The BBC have tied themselves into knots with this - for them both stars appear to have used unacceptable and offensive language but only one has been sacked while another has kept his lucrative salary and got away with just a suspension." They continued to The Sun: "Disabled colleagues have been left wondering why incidents of ableist slurs seemingly aren't being taken as seriously as racist language and there are no clear answers coming from bosses." Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the BBC told MailOnline: "Whilst we do not comment on any individual matter, each case is always considered on its own facts. We are very clear on our expectations that inappropriate behaviour and language will not be tolerated." A video obtained by The Sun last month saw Jamie captured describing the residents of Blackpool, where the show was filming at the time, as "m********s." Co-star Wynne Evans was reportedly backstage with Borthwick at rehearsals and heard saying "Oh my God" when he made the comment. Borthwick has since apologised for using the term and admitted that he had not fully understood the derogatory nature of what he said and is now "deeply embarrassed." The soap actor said in a statement, which read: 'I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly. 'I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning. That is on me completely. 'Now I am aware, I am deeply embarrassed to have used the term and directed it in the way I did. It was wrong." He went on to issue an apology to the people of Blackpool and reiterate his regret over his words. The Mirror has contacted a representative of the star for comment at the time. Meanwhile, MasterChef star John Torode was sacked earlier this week after he came forward as the unnamed person in the firm Lewis Silkin's report, commissioned by Banjiay, into the conduct of John's co-host Gregg Wallace, following allegations of misconduct. The upheld complaint about John was "an accusation of highly offensive racist language against", which John has vehemently denied. Torode has insisted "he had absolutely no recollection" of using the racist term. John denied the allegation in a statement which read: "Following publication of the Executive Summary of the investigation into Gregg Wallace while working on MasterChef, I am aware of speculation that I am one of the two other individuals against whom an allegation has been upheld. "For the sake of transparency, I confirm that I am the individual who is alleged to have used racial language on one occasion. The allegation is that I did so sometime in 2018 or 2019, in a social situation, and that the person I was speaking with did not believe that it was intended in a malicious way and that I apologised immediately afterwards. "I have absolutely no recollection of any of this, and I do not believe that it happened. However, I want to be clear that I've always had the view that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment. I'm shocked and saddened by the allegation as I would never wish to cause anyone any offence." The BBC announced on Tuesday (July 15) that Torode's contract was not going to be renewed and he was later sacked from MasterChef.

Love Island's Harrison arrives home in the UK after quitting the villa – but Lauren is nowhere to be seen
LOVE Island star Harrison Solomon has arrived back in the UK after sensationally quitting the villa this week. The controversial islander, 22, decided to leave the show after being involved in one of the most dramatic love triangles in the show's history. 10 10 10 10 10 In new exclusive photos, Harrison was spotted surrounded by his friends and family who greeted him at the airport today. But his love interest and axed Islander Lauren Wood was nowhere to be seen, despite vowing to wait for him. Harrison, 22, was seen embracing his loved ones as they celebrated his return after he walked from the villa on Thursday night. Despite the fan backlash, he flashed a big smile as he came face-to-face with his pals, who gave him a big hug. The footballer was seen pushing his Love Island suitcase through arrivals, before sitting on it. He wore a white striped shirt and a pair of black shorts with a black trainers for the flight home. The reality star then exited the airport with his mobile phone in his hand after it was returned to him by producers after his exit. A far cry from the sunshine in Mallorca, Harrison was seen bracing the rain on Saturday as he headed to the car park. Although Lauren, who lives in York, was not there to greet Harrison, it is likely that she was arriving at another airport, given the pair live in different parts of the UK. The Derby lad had been flip-flopping between Toni Laites and Lauren for days - leaving both of them in tears along the way. Lauren was booted out of the villa after new bombshell Angel picked Ty to couple up with. The brunette begged Harrison to come with her but he insisted he wanted to sleep on it and decide the next day. Lauren broke down in tears but said she would wait for him on the outside and insisted: "I only want you." On last night's episode, Harrison decided to leave and to continue his relationship with Lauren on the outside. A source said: "It's been a momentous few days for Harrison and ultimately he has decided to quit. "Everyone was so shocked and people were crying and hugging him. "He worked through everything with the ITV duty of care team and is making his way home to his family now." Harrison announced his decision to the villa, leaving his close pals in tears. He then pulled Toni for a final chat where he tearfully apologised for stringing her along for weeks. Harrison admitted: "We just weren't right for each other." Toni burst into tears and said she was sad not because he was leaving but because she wasted so much time on him. The day before, Harrison got emotional after seeing the devastation he was causing. Controversially, he made a plea to Toni ahead of the latest recoupling to pick him, despite having had sex with Lauren the night before. Toni's decision to choose him blindsided their exes Cach Mercer and Lauren, with both left sobbing after being embarrassed in front of their friends. Earlier that day, she'd told Lauren she was done with Harrison. Sitting by the fire pit, she said: 'He's all yours, girlfriend. "I'm removing myself from this." But the next day, he complimented Lauren's looks when he saw her wearing a red bikini and refused to close the door completely. She was even caught helping him floss his teeth, which proved to be the final straw for Toni, who accused him of constantly "making her look stupid". He then admitted that he "missed" Lauren and wanted to give things another go with her. 10 10 10 10

Ex-Peppa Pig boss ‘loses £300,000 after he was sacked for brandishing a pen at his boss' in five-year court battle
AN EX-Peppa Pig exec has lost £300,000 after being sacked for threatening his boss with pen. Mark Dowding, who earned up to £160,000 a year at toy giant The Character Group PLC, was given the boot and left with a hefty bill after a five-year court battle. The former chief financial officer, who may be forced to sell his home and pension, was dismissed in 2017 after a breakdown in trust, following a heated row with his boss where he allegedly pointed a pen in a threatening way. He took the company, makers of Peppa Pig plushies and Doctor Who toys, to an employment tribunal, claiming he was unfairly dismissed and that the pen incident was fabricated. But in 2020 Employment Judge Omar Khalil said: "The tribunal concludes that the incident as described by [Mr Dowding's boss] did occur, which included the claimant pointing towards him brandishing a pen in a threatening manner." Despite the ruling, the former Peppa Pig exec launched several appeals. LEGAL BATTLE Despite the ruling, Dowding launched several appeals and a High Court claim, running up eye-watering legal costs. One remaining claim is still live- but he's now been told it will be struck out unless he coughs up the £288,000 he owes from his failed legal bids. High Court judge Richard Spearman KC said the financial blow puts Dowding at risk of losing his £850,000 home and his pension, his only regular income. The judge quoted Greek tragedy writer Sophocles, saying: "It is a painful thing to look at your own trouble and know that you yourself and no one else has made it'. He added: "That, in my view, is the predicament in which the claimant Mr Dowding now finds himself." THE PEN INCIDENT Mr Dowding joined The Character Group in 2012 and was earning £110,000 plus a potential 50 per cent bonus by the time of his dismissal. The 2017 incident unfolded during a heated meeting with his boss, Mr Shah. Judge Khalil said: "Their discussion became heated and voices were raised. "The claimant accepted in evidence he raised his voice first. "Mr Shah also alleged that the claimant had pointed a pen towards him, causing Mr Shah to retreat. "This was set out in his email, which followed this altercation on the same day. "In that email, Mr Shah said: 'You raised your voice towards me in a threatening manner and pointed a pen in my face whilst rolling forward towards me with your chair. I had to roll my chair back to prevent injury to my face'.' THE FIGHT GOES ON After losing at tribunal, Dowding refused to back down, instead filing a flurry of appeals and launching a High Court claim. In December 2023, an order was made securing his legal costs against the equity in his Rotherhithe Street home in south London. Judge Spearman said: "Essentially as a result of the way in which he chose to plead his case and to contest the efforts of TCG to restrict that case to what is properly arguable, a number of substantial orders for costs were made against Mr Dowding in July 2024. "Mr Dowding sought, but was refused, permission to appeal against those orders to the Court of Appeal. "According to the disclosure Mr Dowding has provided, his only source of income is his personal pension, and his only substantial assets are his personal pension fund and the equity in his home. "He now faces losing that fund, and maybe also his home, to meet those costs orders. "He is in a very unhappy position because, on the disclosure he has made, he can ill-afford to meet these costs liabilities: either his home may be forfeit or his pension may be forfeit - possibly, if things go on the way they have, both. "That is a consequence of bringing and pursuing expensive litigation which has all been unsuccessful, resulting in the costs orders." 5
