Knicks G Jalen Brunson wins Clutch Player of the Year
April 24 - New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson won the Jerry West Trophy as the 2024-25 NBA Clutch Player of the Year on Wednesday.
Brunson, 28, received 70 of 100 first-place votes as the player who best comes through for his team late in close games. A global media panel voted based on nominations from NBA head coaches.
Brunson averaged an NBA-high 5.6 points in clutch situations, which are defined as possessions in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime when the score is within five points. In those instances, he also led the league in field goals made (52) and ranked second in total points (156) and third in total assists (28).
"I think some people are born into it," Brunson said on TNT's "Inside The NBA" on Wednesday night. "I think I had to learn back in high school, and I've gotten better and better at each stage, and here we are."
The Knicks went 17-11 in clutch games involving Brunson, who shot 51.5 percent from the field and 84.0 percent from the free-throw line in clutch time.
"Just finding a way to win," Brunson said of being more than a scorer. "I think that's just most important. You can have clutch plays, but that doesn't mean anything if you don't win. The winning part is most important for me."
A two-time All-Star, Brunson averaged 26.0 points and 7.3 assists over 35.4 minutes during his 65 regular-season games (all starts) this season. He ranked eighth in the NBA in both points and assists per game.
Brunson led the voting with 426 points, with 70 first-place votes (worth five points per vote), 24 for second (three points each) and four for third (one point each). Denver's Nikola Jokic finished second with 312 points (26, 58, 8) and Minnesota's Anthony Edwards was third with 47 (2, 5, 22).
The two remaining first-place votes went to Golden State's Stephen Curry (fifth with 27 points) and the Lakers' LeBron James (seventh with 14 points). Twelve players received at least one vote.
The previous winners of the award were Curry in 2023-24 and Kings guard De'Aaron Fox in 2022-23.

Greenwood was the No. 2 overall pick of the 1979 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls. The Los Angeles Lakers won the coin toss for No. 1 pick and picked legendary Magic Johnson. Greenwood was a four-year starter for the Bruins and averaged 14.8 points and 8.7 rebounds in 118 games at UCLA. He was one of the final recruits of legendary coach John Wooden but the "Wizard of Westwood" retired months before Greenwood stepped on campus in the fall of 1975. He averaged 17.5 and 11.4 rebounds as a junior in 1977-78 and followed up with averages of 19.9 points and 10.3 rebounds. He still ranks fourth on the school's all-time rebounding list with 1,022. According to the school, Greenwood ranks third in program history with 52 games of 10 or more rebounds, topped only by legends Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) with 78 and Bill Walton with 75. He averaged a career-high 16.3 points as a rookie and averaged more than nine rebounds as a game on five occasions in his NBA career. Former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins booted from Puerto Rico league
June 11 - Former NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins was suspended by a Puerto Rico basketball league and had his contract rescinded after igniting a brawl earlier this week. The Baloncesto Superior Nacional League also fined Cousins $4,250, and he could be subject to another fine of $5,570, according to the league. The incident occurred Monday when Cousins was playing on the road for the Guaynabo Mets. "As an organization, we strongly condemn any form of violence or provocation, whether on or off the field. Safety, respect, and sportsmanship are non-negotiable values for this franchise," the Mets said in a news release. The situation began with Cousins exchanging words with a fan before he grabbed his crotch while walking toward the courtside seats. Cousins then grabbed the fan's arm as things quickly escalated. Teammates attempted to pull Cousins away and other fans began to hurl insults at Cousins. After being ejected, Cousins was doused by liquids as he left the floor. Security tackled him at one point to hold him back from trying to get into the stands. Cousins, 34, was averaging 18.2 points and 9.0 rebounds while playing in the top pro basketball league in Puerto Rico for the second time. He also played in the league in 2023. Cousins hasn't played in the NBA since the 2021-22 season. He was a four-time All-Star in 11 seasons but his career was derailed by two major injuries. In January 2018, he sustained an Achilles tendon injury with the New Orleans Pelicans. After returning to play 30 games for the Golden State Warriors the next season, he tore the ACL in his left knee in August 2019 as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers and missed the entire season. Cousins played for seven NBA teams with the best part of his career being his 6 1/2 seasons with the Sacramento Kings from 2010-17. He finished third in Rookie of the Year balloting in 2011 after being the fifth overall pick out of Kentucky. Overall, Cousins averaged 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds in 654 games (561 starts). --Field Level Media
