Duke Energy Foundation awards grants to enhance natural resources in west-central Indiana

Yahoo08-04-2025

Duke Energy Foundation has awarded grants to seven conservation groups and local governments in west-central Indiana that are undertaking environmental initiatives to enhance parks and greenways, help natural habitats thrive and expand outdoor recreational and educational opportunities.
The shareholder-funded grants are benefiting projects in Vigo, Parke, Clay and Knox counties.
'Preserving Indiana's natural resources — and the special places that bridge connections between Hoosiers and the environment — is at the heart of the work these organizations do every day,' said Stan Pinegar, president of Duke Energy Indiana.
Some of the grants awarded include:
• Vigo County Parks & Recreation Department (Vigo County) — $17,000 to construct a disc golf course at Fowler Park and community building at Griffin Bike Park.
• reTHink (Vigo County)— $5,000 to support the group's Love the Earth campaign, which raises funds to maintain four community gardens, as well as support its plastic up-cycling workshop, a zero-waste community store, and various educational activities on waste reduction and conservation.
• Covered Bridge Gateway Trails Association (Parke County) — $2,000 to extend Parke Community Rail Trail.
• Town of Harmony (Clay County) — $6,000 for the restoration and beautification of Harmony Park. It will be used to restore and beautify Harmony Park's walking track and nature trail.• City of Vincennes, Parks & Recreation Department — $12,000 for continued revitalization of Gregg Park.
• Vincennes University Foundation — $10,000 to support a project aimed at addressing soil erosion at the Vincennes University Agriculture Center.
• Knox County Soil & Water Conservation District — $10,000 for public outreach around watershed planning and implementation projects.

Kinston Fire and Rescue unveils new jet ski

KINSTON, N.C (WNCT)- The Kinston Fire and Rescue team introduced a brand-new jet ski to the fleet, and it was the first of its kind. The jet ski was awarded through the Duke Energy Foundation Tropical Readiness Grant. Along with a jet ski, they also received water rescue vests, throw bags, and helmets. Administrative captain, Stevens Nimmo, says the response times will see the biggest impact, especially during aquatic rescues. 'So, our goal is to be able to respond to water emergencies much faster with the jet ski than we can with our water rescue boats,' Stevens Nimmo said. 'So, hopefully we can take five to ten minutes off of the response time or five or ten minutes off of getting to the person who needs assistance on the river' The grant was awarded late last year, and now the fire department is looking forward to seeing the immediate impact. Talks of an aquatic rescue team are also going through discussions. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Don't fall for the latest text messaging scam claiming you have unpaid traffic fines

No, the Indiana Department of Vehicles won't text you to demand you pay your traffic tickets. In fact, there is no "Indiana DMV." In Indiana, drivers instead have the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, or BMV. But they aren't sending you these texts, either. A recent text message scam across multiple states is now targeting Hoosiers. It's yet another smishing, or SMS phishing scam, and recipients should not go to the link in the text. The scam is similar to recent fraudulent texts and emails about unpaid tolls. The messages may claim if unpaid traffic fines aren't paid right away, drivers' will be added to a violation database;' their vehicle registrations or licenses will be suspended; they'll face an additional service fee; they'll be prosecuted; and their credit scores will be affected. "Please pay immediately before enforcement to avoid license suspension and further legal disputes," one text message received Wednesday reads. It gives a link that is not for a government website. Scam texts: Indianapolis is one of the top cities receiving toll road scam texts in the United States Don't follow the instructions in the text. You can report the fraudulent texts to the Federal Trade Commission at
