Van Gerwen edges Van Barneveld at World Matchplay
Van Gerwen said he "made things difficult for himself" before eventually seeing off fellow Dutchman Van Barneveld 10-6 in an error-strewn match at the Winter Gardens.
"Raymond didn't play his A-game, but I was more annoyed with my own game because I know I could do better," he told Sky Sports.
"This is a tournament I love to play. I have won it three times. It is always an intense crowd. Everything is perfect. But when you don't play perfect it is really annoying.
"We all know I am a winner. I don't like losing. But maybe this is the start of something really nice."
Price is also through after beating Gurney 10-7, with the pair involved in a heated exchange at the end of the match.
Welshman Price appeared to take issue with Gurney mocking his passionate victory celebration, aggressively shaking his hand before the pair exchanged angry words.
Earlier in the match, Northern Irishman Gurney appeared to mutter an expletive to himself as the two players prepared to walk off the stage for the second break.
The pair previously clashed in 2019 when they had to be separated by security after a Premier League match in Sheffield.
Elsewhere on Monday, English sixth seed Chris Dobey beat Germany's Ricardo Pietreczko 10-5, while compatriot and 14th seed Ross Smith was beaten 10-5 by Northern Ireland's Josh Rock.

Liverpool have launched their new home and away kits for the upcoming 2025-26 campaign as their new 10-year partnership with kit provider Adidas began. It marks the third time that Adidas have partnered with the club after previous collaborations between 1985-1996 and 2006-2012. Liverpool and Adidas were forced to wait until August 1 to officially unveil their new range of kits as the start of previous supplier Nike's five-year contract was delayed due to the Covid pandemic. That deal that saw Liverpool receive a flat fee of £30million plus royalties of 20 per cent on all net sales from Nike. The new deal with Adidas is set to represent a significant increase with the total amount depending on success on the pitch and across global sales. The kit will be worn for the first time during Liverpool's double-header friendly against Athletic Club at Anfield on August 4, with the club wearing the away shirt in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace on August 10 at Wembley. Liverpool's Chief Commercial Officer, Ben Latty said: 'This is more than just the launch of a new kit – it marks the beginning of a 10-year relationship for LFC and Adidas. Since announcing the partnership in March, there's been a huge sense of anticipation and excitement. This first collection sets the tone for seasons to come.'
