BP makes oil discovery off US Gulf coast
The exploration well was drilled in Green Canyon Block 584 about 120 miles (193.12 km) off the coast of Louisiana. Both the initial well and a sidetrack encountered oil. Preliminary data indicates a potentially commercial volume of oil and gas, the company said in a statement.
It also said it plans to increase output in the Gulf of Mexico to 400,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2030. It expects global production to reach 2.3 million to 2.5 million boepd by the end of the decade, with potential to grow through 2035.
London-listed shares of BP were up 4.72% in early trade.
BP is the operator of Far South with a 57.5% interest, while partner Chevron holds 42.5%.
BP announced a strategy shift in February to turn around its underperformance, cutting planned investment in renewable energy to refocus on oil and gas.
Around 1 million boepd are expected to be delivered from the U.S. onshore and offshore regions by 2030.
BP plans more exploration in the ocean basin. It has approved the development of the Kaskida oilfield, which lies in a complex geological structure called the Paleogene, and plans to go ahead with a second Paleogene development, Tiber, later this year, CEO Murray Auchincloss told a conference last month.

(Adds statement from Chevron, background on oil company agreements with Iraq) CAIRO - Iraq signed an agreement in principle with U.S. oil producer Chevron for the Nassiriya project that consists of four exploration blocks in addition to the development of other producing oil fields, Iraq's prime minister said on Tuesday. Iraq in the past two years has signed agreements with other oil majors, reversing a long period during which they retreated from the country. Improved contract terms have lured both France's TotalEnergies and UK oil major BP to sign new deals, with a combined investment of over $50 billion. "We are confident that Chevron, with its proven track record and expertise in successfully developing oil and gas projects, has the resources, experience, and technology to support Iraq to further develop new energy resources," said Frank Mount, Chevron's vice president of corporate business development, in a statement. In 2021, Iraq authorised National Oil Company (NOC) to negotiate with Chevron over the development of oilfields in Nassiriya, in the Iraqi southern province of Dhi Qar. The ministry at the time said its plan in the province included the completion of a group of giant projects in the oil and gas and water injection sectors, with a targeted initial capacity of 600,000 barrels of crude oil per day within seven years of starting work. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said the government adopted a new approach in dealing with major international oil companies and their investments in Iraq, especially U.S. companies, his office said.

Iraq signs agreement with US energy giant Chevron on oil exploration
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani announced an agreement in principle on Tuesday between the Ministry of Oil and US energy company Chevron. Mr Al Sudani's office said the agreement includes four exploration blocks, the development of the Balad oilfield and possibly other fields and projects. During a meeting with Chevron vice president Frank Mount in Iraq, Mr Al Sudani welcomed the company's return to work in the country, 'affirming that the government has adopted a different approach in dealing with major oil companies and their investments in Iraq, particularly American ones', his office said. Mr Al Sudani also spoke of Chevron's efforts in transferring oil technology to Iraq, its community contributions and environmental policies it follows in its oil projects. Mr Mount celebrated the "heads of agreement" with Iraq as an important milestone. 'Iraq is a major producer of crude oil and holds substantial oil and gas resources," he said in a statement. "We are confident that Chevron, with its proven track record and expertise in successfully developing oil and gas projects, has the resources, experience and technology to support Iraq to further develop new energy resources.' The agreement in principle follows one made by US company SLB – formerly known as Schlumberger – in July. The contract signed between Iraq's Ministry of Oil and SLB was aimed at boosting natural gas production at the Akkas gasfield. Iraq's Oil Minister Hayan Abdel Ghani said at the time that the deal aimed to raise production levels to 100 million standard cubic feet a day. Mr Al Sudani also held talks with Baker Hughes chief executive Lorenzo Simonelli this year to discuss the US energy technology company's projects in Iraq. Despite being the second-largest producer in Opec, Iraq still depends on Iran for about a third of its electricity needs. Baghdad has come under increasing pressure from Washington to be less reliant on Tehran.
