'Captain should've directly told Ravindra Jadeja...': Greg Chappell blames Shubman Gill for Lord's defeat
Australian cricketer Greg Chappell praised Ravindra Jadeja's efforts in handling the pressure but felt he should have been more proactive while batting with the tail. Although this criticism has often been directed at Jadeja despite his strong performance, Chappell's viewpoint stands out as he equally blamed captain Shubman Gill for failing to guide Jadeja's strategy during that crucial phase.
Although Jadeja did a good job of shielding Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah, Chappell pointed out that if India were to win the game, he needed to go for boundaries. He pointed out that merely taking a single each over wouldn't have been enough, especially with minimal contribution from the other end.
'The Lord's Test also provided a telling moment with the way Jadeja was managed late in the match. Left with the tail, Jadeja did what many specialist batters do in that situation: he shielded the tail, farmed the strike, and played conservatively. On the surface, it was a disciplined innings. But was it the right one?' asked Chappell in his column for ESPNCricinfo.
Chappel cites Ben Stokes 2019 knock as example for India
The former India head coach said that Gill should have clearly instructed Jadeja to go for the win while the tailenders were still at the crease.
'The truth is, Jadeja was the only recognised batter left. If India were to chase down the target, he had to take calculated risks. His job wasn't to leave balls and collect singles – it was to win the match. That clarity should have come from the dressing room, from the captain. He needed to be told directly: 'You are the man who has to get this done. The tail's job is to hang in there with you, but you must go for the win.
'We saw exactly that from England's Ben Stokes against Australia in Leeds in 2019. In a similar situation, he backed himself and produced one of the best innings of the past 50 years. Importantly, Stokes played that innings knowing that, succeed or fail, his team and leadership would have his back. That's the mindset that needs to be fostered in any great team,' Chappell added.
Ravindra Jadeja batted for a duration of 3 hrs along with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj and added 35 abd 23 runs respectively, but it was not enough to win the match. India lost the match by 22 runs.
Chappell points finger on Shubman Gill's captaincy
Chappell pointed finger on Shubman Gill and said,'And this is where Gill's leadership challenge becomes very real. He must start setting those expectations – clearly, proactively, and consistently. Gill must define what sort of team he wants India to be. The captain sets the tone – not just with words, but with actions, clarity of purpose, and visible standards,' he added.
Chappell highlighted on Gill's captaincy and said that Gill needs to quickly acquire the communication skills that great captains possess. Whether in the dressing room, on the field, or during training, he emphasized the importance of calm, effective communication. Gill can't lead the team with his batting alone, Chappell says; he needs to develop his communication skills to bring the players together, give them confidence, and gain their trust.

Long wait could be over for Jurel at Old Trafford
Dhruv Jurel isn't quite expressive. He is calm, though not often quiet. He comes with a positive mindset, and is always ready to put in the hard yards. The son of an army man, he focuses on 'process' and 'discipline'. Those two words, he believes, have helped him grow as a cricketer. In a competitive environment, where opportunity doesn't come easy, long waits may often make or break careers, and for Jurel, it has been a long eight-month wait since his last Test outing in Perth last November. But the 24-year-old has taken it in his stride. Ever since landing in England a couple of months ago, Jurel has featured in just two games for India-A, where he scored 227 runs in four innings and claimed seven catches. But in the senior team, Jurel has been under the shadow of Rishabh Pant, the team's vice-captain and the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter. While Pant featured in all three Tests in the series so far, Jurel worked closely with fielding coach T. Dilip and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak over the last several weeks to make sure he remains fit and in the groove. When India had a long session at Beckenham earlier this week, Jurel was among the first few batters to have a long session in the nets. As bowling coach Morne Morkel aimed at Jurel's stumps to test his outside edge, the youngster remained unperturbed and looked confident throughout. And as India gears up for the must-win fourth Test at Old Trafford, India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate indicated that if Pant, who hurt his left index finger during the Lord's Test, isn't ready to keep the wickets, India could look at Jurel. In that case, Pant could be used as a specialist batter. Jurel, being a steady middle-order batter, could also add depth to the batting department. However, if both Jurel and Pant end up playing together, it would be a selection headache for the team management. But sources indicated that Pant will be monitored over the next couple of days before taking a call. 'We don't want to go through that again where we have to replace the keeper halfway through in the innings. We are just trying to give (Pant's finger) as long as possible (to heal), and hopefully he's good to go in Manchester in the first training session,' Doeschate said, adding: 'Jurel is in the equation.' In the previous Test, Jurel came in as Pant's substitute after the latter hurt his finger, and ended up conceding 25 byes in the second innings, as India went down by 22 runs to concede a 1-2 lead in the five-match series. But it's not just Jurel, several wicket-keepers have struggled in England where the ball wobbles a lot once it goes past the batter. Despite earning praise from the cricketing fraternity, it has still been a long wait for Jurel. But now, with the series on the line and the team management not willing to risk Pant, he could just get lucky.

Anshul Kamboj Likely To Make Debut In 4th IND-ENG Test At Old Trafford: Report
Last Updated: 24-year-old Anshul Kamboj has 79 wickets to his name in 24 first-class matches played so far. In his last red-ball match for India A, he picked up a total of four wickets. 24-year-old right-arm medium pacer Anshul Kamboj, who on Sunday (July 20) joined the Indian team in Manchester as cover for injured Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep, in all likelihood will make his Test debut for India in the fourth red-ball match of the ongoing five-match series against England. According to a report in the Times of India on Sunday, 'There are high chances that Anshul could also be in line for his debut with pacer Akash Deep, who also limped off during the Lord's Test." Anshul, who has 79 wickets and 486 runs to his name in 24 first-class matches played so far, last played for India A in the two four-day matches against the England Lions and impressed with his all-round show. He dismissed one England Lions batter in the first match and picked up two wickets each in both innings of the second red-ball match played from June 6 to 9. In the second match, apart from his bowling, Anshul impressed with his batting and remained unbeaten on 51 runs from 86 balls as a No. 9 batter. It has been reported that Akash Deep and Arshdeep are likely to be out of the fourth Test due to injury-related issues, and that will open the doors for Anshul. Anshul, who made his IPL debut in 2024 for the Mumbai Indians and was part of the Chennai Super Kings setup in IPL 2025, is likely to get a nod ahead of Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur. 'Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep won't be playing together in the remaining two Tests," a source was quoted as saying by TOI. 'It was decided before the tour that Bumrah will only play three Tests in this series, and now with Akash's back niggle flaring up, we can't see both of them playing in the XI together." 'If Bumrah plays in Manchester, then Akash will sit out. At The Oval, Akash will replace Bumrah," the source added. The fourth Test of the 2025 edition of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will be played from July 23 to 27 at Old Trafford in Manchester. In the last 89 years, India has played a total of nine red-ball matches in Manchester but never managed to get the better of the English team. view comments First Published: July 20, 2025, 18:16 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
