Jannik Sinner's victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the men's singles final was watched by 8.8 million, the BBC has revealed, in what has been a bumper tournament for the television institution
Jannik Sinner's thrilling victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the men's singles final at Wimbledon was watched by a whopping 8.8 million viewers, the BBC has revealed.

A staggering 8.3 million of these fans tuned in via BBC One, marking a significant increase from last year's figure of 7.5 million. Sinner's first Wimbledon title win, secured after an intense four-set duel, was just one of several highlights during the BBC's fortnight-long coverage.

In the women's singles final, Iga Swiątek clinched her maiden Wimbledon title with a commanding straight sets victory over Amanda Anisimova. They drew a peak audience of 4.1 million on BBC One and was streamed over a million times on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app.

However, it was British sensation Emma Raducanu who truly captured the nation's attention. Her Centre Court showdown with Aryna Sabalenka pulled in a peak TV audience of 5 million, making it the third most-watched non-final match in four years. It was only surpassed by Raducanu's own fourth-round nail-biter against Lulu Sun in 2024 and Andy Murray's clash with John Isner in 2022.
The Beeb also revealed that this year's Wimbledon championships set a new record for overall viewership, with an unprecedented 69.3 million people tuning in across BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website, and BBC Sport app throughout the tournament.
Wimbledon's digital engagement has smashed previous records too, with the BBC announcing a staggering number of online requests this year. The figures soared past the 50.1 million online requests made in 2024 and eclipsed the prior record of 54.3 million set in 2023.

Alex Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport says: "This year's record-breaking digital figures for Wimbledon are testament to the huge appeal of the sport amongst audiences and the power of digital innovation to bring both new and existing fans closer to the action than ever before. The way people are following Wimbledon is changing but that is exciting for us as we look to tell the best stories in different ways".
The successful figures come despite the BBC facing calls on social media to drop a member of its commentary team.
Andrew Castle, a stalwart of the broadcaster's Wimbledon coverage in recent years, was chosen for the men's singles final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday, a choice that seemed to go down badly with fans.

"Why oh why do the BBC put Andrew Castle on lead commentary for the Men's Singles final every year, he's terrible. My ears have already start to bleed," said one viewer.
Another lamented the decision, saying: "Massive build up to this #WimbledonFinal and then BBC put Andrew Castle on commentary. Way to kill the match for me before it even starts," as reported by the Mirror.

"Wow Andrew Castle is so bad he is already trending internationally," another fan pointed out. A fourth disgruntled viewer expressed, "Heart sinks when I hear the words 'and your commentator is Andrew Castle'. Ruins enjoyment of every match. @BBCSport needs to cut the chord,".
Castle's presence at Wimbledon has been a big talking point this year, particularly after Trinity Rodman took umbrage with his mentions of her as she watched boyfriend Ben Shelton, and following appearance from Andre Agassi on the BBC's commentary team for the semi-final clash between Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz.
Agassi's arrival prompted a flood of positive reactions from viewers, many of whom seemed to prefer his insight to Castle's.
Whether there are any plans to shake things up for next year's coverage remains to be seen, however.

Oleksandr Usyk proves too strong again for Daniel Dubois at Wembley

Home favourite Dubois was back at the national stadium 10 months on from his stunning knockout win over Anthony Joshua and in the ring with Usyk for a second time. Usyk had shown his class during a one-sided contest in Krakow in 2023, where Dubois was adjudged to have landed an illegal low blow in the fifth round, but the Ukrainian had been warned throughout fight week he would face a 'different' boxer on this occasion. Yet, the undefeated 38-year-old again proved too strong for Dubois. After Usyk enjoyed the better of the opening four rounds, he produced a masterful fifth-round finish to further cement his status as one of boxing's all-time greats. After Usyk put Dubois down with a powerful right punch, the British boxer bravely made it back to his feet but was floored again a matter of seconds later by a huge left hook to lose for a third time. It earned Usyk the 24th win of a stellar professional career and ensured he got his hands back on the IBF title to add to his WBA, WBO and WBC belts and become undisputed in the blue riband division for a second time, in what was dubbed his penultimate bout. '38 is a young guy, remember! 38 is only start,' Usyk smirked after he secured a seventh consecutive triumph against British fighters. Even though the crowd was slightly down on the 96,000 packed in to see Dubois shock Joshua in September, the prize on offer was even greater with all four world heavyweight belts on the line for the first time in England. OLEKSANDR USYK KNOCKS OUT DANIEL DUBOIS🤯#UsykDubois2 — DAZN Boxing (@DAZNBoxing) July 19, 2025 The prospect of being undisputed in the blue-riband division had long been a goal for Dubois and after a dramatic build-up to the bout with a push on the Wembley turf followed by the scream in the face of Usyk on Tuesday, the talking was over. Following spectacular ring walks with fireworks for both men, the duo immediately traded off but while Dubois briefly had Usyk on the ropes, the former cruiserweight slipped out in classy fashion and finished round one with a flush left hook to the face of the Londoner. It was a similar story in rounds two and three with Usyk's movement too good for Dubois, who got caught twice when trying to land the money shot. Dubois turned to the body in the fourth round but Usyk continued to show his experience and craft as the British boxer failed to land cleanly. The eagerness of Dubois to make his mark was evident at the start of round five when he was ready 10 seconds before the count, but it would soon be curtains for the 27-year-old. Usyk almost got the job done with a huge right, which floored Dubois who showed guts to rise again after an eight-second count. It would prove a false dawn as almost immediately Usyk landed a massive left hook and there was no coming back this time for Dubois as his undisputed dream ended in painful fashion on home turf. Dubois is the third fighter from Britain, after Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, to lose twice to the 6ft 3in southpaw. An understandably jovial Usyk hinted at another showdown with Fury and Joshua during his post-fight interview but made clear his desire to 'rest' after he experienced London jubilation for a third time following Olympic gold at the London Games in 2012 and his maiden world heavyweight titles at Tottenham's stadium four years ago. 'Next? I don't know. I want to rest. Yeah, Derek (Chisora) here? I don't know,' Usyk reflected before his next answer sparked enormous cheers. 'Maybe Tyson Fury? 'Three options, Derek Chisora and Anthony Joshua. Maybe Joseph Parker. Listen, I cannot say because I want to go back home.'

But after being dropped twice and stopped in five rounds, he said: "I have to commend him, I gave everything I had. "There were some things I could have sharpened up on, but I'll be back. I was in a fight, I was trying to pick it round by round, but it is what it is, I'll be back."

Mrs Browns Boys returning to the BBC after controversy

The fifth series of the comedy programme is now only weeks away and is returning despite the creator apologising for a racial slur. Teasing the new show, the corporation said: "Agnes Brown and the gang from Finglas are back! "Everyone's favourite Irish Mammy returns for a brand new fifth series featuring all your favourite characters, so get ready for more slapstick shenanigans this spring!" According to The Sun, the BBC's head of comedy, Jon Petrie, added: "Brendan has created an iconic comedy character in Agnes Brown. "Mrs. Brown's Boys is a BAFTA-winning comedy show and one of the BBC's most-watched comedies ever. I'm proud to have it in the BBC Comedy stable." Mrs Brown's Boys will return to UK telly on Friday, August 1 at 9:30pm on BBC One. BBC viewers dub Mrs Brown's Boys 'utter garbage' and 'worst thing' they have ever seen Despite this popularity, many are not so keen on the show, with one person penning: "The worst show I've ever seen. It's ghastly, and thankfully, no one I know likes it, because if they did, then I'd disown them. UTTER GARBAGE." Another said: "Quite possibly the worst thing I've ever watched in my life. "For something that is labelled as a comedy, it is incredibly unfunny. "The entire premise of this show is woefully outdated, predictable, cringe inducing, with an annoyingly overactive audience. "Of all genres, comedy is probably the most diverse in terms of its audience reception, but if 1920s-style slapstick is your jam, this will probably tick a box for you." However, with a rating of 7.1/10 on IMDb, most enjoy the programme. Recommended Reading: One person wrote: "Some of the funniest slapstick I have seen in years. The live audience and the accidentals (on-stage flubs) only serve to make what is already hilariously funny, even funnier." Another added: "Love this series. I can't stop watching it. Terrific cast, fantastic humour. I never want the show to end. So much craziness in the world today, so much to worry about, but this show takes you away from it. Brilliant, Mr. O'Carroll." A third fan said: "So glad I stumbled upon this show through a friend. It has to be the funniest show I've ever seen!"
