talked about his new series
During an interview with Hindustan Times, director Nagesh Kukunoor recently opened up about his new web series titled 'The Hunt: The
Rajiv Gandhi Assassination
Case', streaming on Sony LIV. He shared insights on his journey as a filmmaker, his experience working in the OTT space, and also his future plans in cinema. The series is based on the real-life investigation of former Prime Minister
Rajiv Gandhi
's assassination and has drawn attention due to its sensitive and politically connected subject.
Nagesh Kukunoor's views on long format content
Kukunoor said that for the last six to seven years, he has been fully involved in creating long-form content for digital platforms. He worked on multiple projects for major OTT platforms. He explained that he enjoys the long format because it allows him to explore characters in detail, something that's difficult in a two-hour film. However, he also mentioned that the early excitement around OTT has started to settle down, though he still finds it creatively satisfying.
Despite being active in the digital space, Kukunoor expressed his interest in returning to theatrical films. He said it's time for him to 'wade back into films,' but he admitted that making films without star actors is very difficult in the current market. One of his biggest challenges is that he doesn't always choose big celebrities for his projects. Because of this, getting financial backing and distribution becomes hard.
He pointed out that in theatres, audiences and producers still expect to see a known face to attract attention and business.
Talking about his creative process, Kukunoor revealed that he always has stories in mind. However, he only commits to a project when the script really demands to be made and when there is a realistic budget to work with. He's not someone who just jumps on every idea. Instead, he waits for the right time and resources to develop it properly.
About the series
About 'The Hunt', Kukunoor stressed that even though it's based on a major political event, the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, it is not a political show. He clarified that the series is a true-crime thriller, based on facts and it focuses on the detailed investigation that led to solving the case. He also said that while some may link the topic to politics, his intent was never to create a political drama.
Kukunoor also pointed out that he prefers fictional political stories over real political figures.
He had earlier worked on a political show for three seasons, but it featured entirely fictional characters. In contrast, The Hunt deals with real people and real incidents, so it was very important for him to handle the content sensitively. He said that when dealing with actual people and many of whom are still alive, so one needs to be extra careful in portraying them with honesty and balance.
Lastly, he said that he tried to present both sides of the story with humanity, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) officers and even the LTTE operatives responsible for the attack and his goal was not to take sides but to show how events unfolded as truthfully as possible. He didn't want to sensationalize the case or draw modern political connections. Instead, he focused on creating a balanced and respectful portrayal of a tragic chapter in India's history.

When Sanjay Dutt shocked the ‘Khalnayak' crew by choking his co-actor in a last-minute improvisation

Interestingly, despite the controversy surrounding Sanju Baba's alleged involvement in the 1993 Bombay Bomb Blast case, the same year the film was released, 'Khalnayak' managed to succeed. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Initially, the movie faced major obstacles, and many doubted it would ever be released amid the widespread public outrage and backlash. Despite initial doubts, the film was released and went on to break several box office records both nationally and internationally. Marking 30 years since its debut, Subhash recently reminisced about the making of the film in an interview with Hindustan Times. Ghai said that he wanted to get it right. He enacted each and every scene for Sanju. He wanted to make that character look very unpredictable. Whether he will love or fight, you never know. And fortunately, he played the character exactly like he told him to. Amid the improvisations, a particular moment on set took everyone by surprise. During the shoot, Dutt unexpectedly grabbed a man by the neck, an action no one knew was planned. When he squeezed the man's throat, the crew was alarmed and suggested stopping the shoot, but Ghai was firm about continuing. He recalled the scene, explaining that there is a scene when he goes to jail to meet a man and speaks to him kindly. But as 's character hugs him, he suddenly strangles him. Not many people on the set were aware that this would happen, which is why they were surprised. His assistant even asked to cut the shot because he thought Sanjay had done it by mistake, but Ghai told them to let it happen as he had improvised it. They shot it that way and everyone loved it. In one notable improvisation during the filming of the song 'Choli Ke Peeche', Dutt was suddenly asked at the last moment to wear an eye mask, which enhanced the visual appeal of the song. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In the same interview, Ghai revealed why he chose Sanjay over all other actors for the lead role. He said that once Sanjay asked him why he was selected, and Ghai replied it was because of his eyes. There is innocence and childlikeness in his eyes, but at the same time, also see a man full of anger. He plays the son, but he simultaneously justifies the role of a villain who kidnaps and murders. Released in 1993, 'Khalnayak' went on to achieve cult status over the years. There have been ongoing talks and speculation about rebooting the film, with actors like and often linked to the lead role. Despite the buzz, no concrete plans have ever been finalized.

'Why is Varamahalakshmi celebrated?' Bengaluru shop's ChatGPT-inspired ad goes viral; here's why

In Bengaluru, where new ideas are always buzzing, a local saree shop has found a creative way to grab attention ahead of the Varamahalakshmi festival. Instead of using the usual ads, the shop put up a display that looks just like a ChatGPT conversation screen– and it's got everyone talking on social media. An ad that speaks the language of today's audience The ad copies the look of a chat window from a conversational AI, with the question, 'Why is Varamahalakshmi festival celebrated?' This clever twist has caught people's attention and shows how Bengaluru brands are using modern digital trends to stay relatable and connect with today's audience. Sharing the image on X (formerly Twitter), one user noted, 'Local saree shop in Bangalore using ChatGPT mobile interface for an ad is a first. Earlier, it would be the Google search bar design. Just Bangalore things, I guess.' This remark, according to the post, highlights how Bengaluru continues to lead in blending tradition with cutting-edge trends. Timing aligned with cultural rhythms According to a Hindustan Times report, with the festival approaching on August 8 – a time when saree shopping is at its peak in South India– the shop's campaign couldn't be better timed. Using a conversational AI style adds a fun, modern twist to the festive shopping buzz. Flexible payment options complement the campaign The store's modern thinking isn't just limited to its marketing. As one user shared on X, it also offers a scheme where customers 'pay for 11 months, get 1 month free' – making it easier for people to shop during the festive season without feeling the financial pinch, according to the HT report. Echoing Bengaluru's tech-savvy spirit According to the report, this campaign has drawn comparisons to other viral Bengaluru moments, such as an image of an auto driver streaming a Naval Ravikant podcast while navigating the city's traffic. As one social media comment put it, 'Only in Bengaluru can a saree shop and an auto driver both go viral for tech-savvy moments.' This captures the city's unique blend of tradition, technology, and everyday hustle. Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
