On the Podcast: How Jane Birkin Became the Ultimate It-Girl

Vogue4 days ago
The fashion equivalent of the Super Bowl—or maybe the recent FIFA Club World Cup final?—may just have been the auction of Jane Birkin's original Hermès Birkin bag last Thursday. On the pod this week to discuss all things Birkin, the origins of French girl style, and how looking effortless often takes real effort is writer and friend of the pod Marisa Meltzer, whose new book, It Girl: The Life and Legacy of Jane Birkin, is out in October.
But first, earlier in the episode, Sam Sussman, Vogue's global director of social, drops in to share what it was like to attend the Birkin bag auction in person—and explain (unrelatedly) why she couldn't stop watching this season of Love Island. (Hint: we love Amaya Papaya!)

Will Castro discusses 'Unique Academy,' famous clients, including ex-Chiefs All-Pro

This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to acclaimed car customizer and TV personality Will Castro about his new show, 'Unique Academy,' and the strong bonds he builds with his students and famous sports clientele. "They definitely get excited. They know the history. Many of them (students) know the history of 'Unique' we work with: celebrities, sports, athletes, musicians, producers, and actors. So they know that they're working with high-profile clients. Still, I also told them that they're coming here to be able to talk to them and mentor them and give them their side of the story, because they're from the same cloth that they came from," said Castro, "Many of these guys came from underprivileged homes but were talented. We want to be able to give back this to the kids, a skill, a trade, and not even if they don't go into the automotive space, but at least give them accountability, responsibility, provide them with some guidelines, and how to handle life." Castro, known for his decades of work customizing cars for stars like LeBron James, DJ Khaled, and Super Bowl champion Victor Cruz, brings his signature blend of hustle, heart, and horsepower to this powerful new format, mentoring the next generation. He notably did a special customization years ago for former Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro running back Larry Johnson. "We just finished Larry Johnson's '66 Lincoln Continental from the Kansas City Chiefs," said Castro in a 2008 interview, "We're doing a lot of old-school for ball players. They're getting into them a lot more. I think what's different about them is they know what they want." Former New York Jets safety Erik Coleman, a Castro client, shared his thoughts with Easton Jr. "Will was one of the guys when I got to New York. I was drafted. I remember visiting the facility and seeing this building, which said 'Unique'. It was a Unique Auto Sports," said Coleman, "I asked one of the older guys, I'm like, yo, is that Unique, like the one? And they're like, that's Will Castro. I dropped in there, probably with one of my teammates, and started talking with Will, and immediately started a friendship. It was awesome because he educated you, and you didn't feel like you had to buy a bunch of stuff. He was like, man, whatever you could dream up, we could figure it out for you. So it was, it was really nice." Acclaimed car customizer and TV personality Will Castro is back with an inspiring new series, Unique Academy, streaming now exclusively on Roku.

Clueless Fans, You Can Now Book a Cher Horowitz–Themed Suite in Beverly Hills

It's been 30 years since Cher Horowitz's colorful life and even more colorful fashion sense debuted in the film Clueless. And though she claimed to have a 'way normal life for a teenager" (as if!), her onscreen adventures and style proved otherwise. I can't be the only one who wishes they had the opportunity to step into Cher's shoes (both literally and figuratively), or try out her virtual closet and extensive wardrobe. Luckily, that dream can now become a reality. To commemorate the film's fashion-forward legacy, the chic L'Ermitage Beverly Hills hotel has partnered with Paramount, Bloomingdale's, and Clueless costume designer Mona May to unveil The Clueless Suite. The bright, pastel-splashed 750-square-foot space would certainly earn two snaps from Cher. Inside, you'll find a large bed decked out in pastel pink and adorned with fluffy pillows, a spacious living area with a full-size couch and access to a private balcony, and playful odes to the film—including a yellow plaid accent wall inspired by Cher's first-day-of-school look, a neon sign with Cher's famous quote 'Carpe diem! Okay?', fuzzy pens, and Liechtenstein-style pop art. You'll also have access to a white Jeep Wrangler, bringing you one step closer to 'rolling with the homies' through Beverly Hills. The L'Ermitage Beverly Hills pays homage to the film's fashion-forward legacy throughout the suite. Colleen O'Brien The nostalgic stay wouldn't be complete without a walk-in closet. Colleen O'Brien And for the pièce de résistance—and the thing most of us have wished was real since the film's 1995 debut—the suite's walk-in closet serves as a fashionable portal to Cher Horowitz's iconic style. It's draped with rotating fashion pieces from Bloomingdale's, which were curated by Mona May with in-house stylists. You'll be asked to fill out a pre-arrival style quiz to personalize recommended outfits, all of which are available to shop via QR code. Guests also get a free membership to Fitted, the official virtual Clueless closet app of the anniversary campaign, as well as a $100 Bloomingdale's gift card, a VIP in-store styling appointment with Bloomingdale's stylists, and a Dior Beauty glam session. Bookable from July 12 through September 1, the Clueless Suite starts at $1,995 per night with a two-night minimum. Reservations can be made on the L'Ermitage Beverly Hills website. If you're unable to book the Clueless suite, don't lose all hope. L'Ermitage guests can also opt for 'The Cher'mitage Experience,' a signature add-on available with any suite stay that includes Clueless-themed turn-down treats, a Polaroid camera, movie streaming, and a complimentary sunset toast at the hotel's new rooftop lounge, Poza. Guests can also book the 'The Cher'mitage Experience' for a chance to eat Clueless-themed treat. Colleen O'Brien More Clueless-inspired hotels and rentals Nostalgic Joshua Tree two-bedroom

Listen to ‘Hamlet.' Feel Better.

'It is we who are Hamlet,' wrote the essayist and critic William Hazlitt. Though that observation is more than 200 years old, the similarities between Shakespeare's bewildered, semi-deranged prince and his audience — all of us — have rarely been clearer than they are today. His circumstances may not match yours in every particular (your newly widowed mother might not have married your uncle, who maneuvered you out of your claim to the throne) but, after the traumas of the past few years, Hamlet's sorrow is likely to feel familiar, as is his sense of powerlessness. Amid political unrest, military deployments in the streets, an unfolding climate crisis and the unforeseeable, possibly apocalyptic disruptions of A.I., who among us hasn't felt, as Hamlet does, that 'the time is out of joint'? A boomlet in productions of 'Hamlet' offers further evidence for the perennial relevance of this bloody tragedy — the story of a young man cracking up as he discovers that his life, his family, the kingdom and very possibly the divine order are not what he thought they were. Eddie Izzard has been touring a solo version of the play; the Royal Shakespeare Company has produced not one but two high-profile revivals, including 'Hamlet Hail to the Thief,' which fuses Shakespeare's text and a Radiohead album; and this year saw the American release of 'Grand Theft Hamlet,' a documentary about the play being staged inside a video game. This surge in popularity for the Dane need not be seen as an ill portent. Hamlet can, these days, seem like the distant forebear of a heavily scrutinized modern type — the lonely, paranoid boy prone to violent speechifying — but there's more than darkness in 'Hamlet,' and more than despair in its title character. You just need to see the story from the right angle — specifically, his. Hamlet's despair is so pervasive, and rendered so vividly by Shakespeare, that even people who have never seen the play or only dimly remember reading it in high school are familiar with the persona of the melancholy Dane: clad in black, moping around, unable to take action. Laurence Olivier gave the definitive description of Hamlet's paralysis when he opened his 1948 film adaptation by calling it the story of a man 'who could not make up his mind.' But there's a different way of interpreting the play. When you keep the focus on Hamlet — that is, when you omit all of the scenes when he's offstage, many of which are spent speculating on what he intends to do — you see that in the ways that matter most, he's not paralyzed at all. Contrary to what Olivier said, making up his mind is precisely the story of 'Hamlet.' Would you like to submit a Letter to the Editor?
