Two-year-old Kutlwano allegedly killed for being 'undesired' gender
Sebokoana Khounyana, a 50-year-old Lesotho national, previously told the court he intends to plead guilty. But his defence team attributes the sangoma's courtroom outburst to his lack of legal support at the time.
The sangoma reportedly led police to Kutlwano Shalaba's shallow grave. The child's mother is accused of selling him to the sangoma for R75 000.
Prosecutors allege that Keneilwe Shalaba turned to the sangoma to kill her child because she was unhappy with the baby's gender.
The case has rocked her Vanderbijlpark community.
Khounyana is due back in court on the 25th of June, when his bail bid will be heard. He and Shalaba remain in custody until then.

Lesotho and SA top brass share info on 'illegal military training camps'
National police commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola on Monday led a delegation of senior officials from government departments under the auspices of the National Joints Operational and Intelligence Structure (Natjoints) to meet his counterpart in Lesotho, advocate Borotho Matsoso. High on the agenda are discussions about allegations that there are illegal Basotho military training camps in South Africa, said police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe. Late last month Masemola said preliminary investigations had uncovered no evidence of the camps. The one-day meeting is under way in Maseru. The delegation of senior South African officials includes: deputy national commissioner of policing and co-chair of the Natjoints Lt-Gen Tebello Mosikili; the head of Interpol in South Africa; a senior officer from police crime intelligence; and a senior official from the department of home affairs. The Lesotho mounted police service delegation is led by Matsoso and includes: deputy police commissioner responsible for operations Likhama Moqhebi; and senior officers from the mounted police service crime intelligence unit, specialised operations and the detectives unit. 'Gen Masemola will appraise the Lesotho police chief on what SA Police Service crime intelligence driven operations have yielded so far,' said Mathe. 'Advocate Matsoso and his delegation are expected to present a report on what the Lesotho mounted police service have uncovered so far.' Telegram's Durov questioned in France over alleged illegal content on app
PARIS - Telegram founder Pavel Durov faced questioning by investigating magistrates in Paris about the platform's alleged complicity in criminal activity, sources close to the case said. Durov was sensationally detained in Paris in 2024 and is under formal investigation by French authorities over illegal content on his popular messaging service. Arriving at the Paris courthouse with four of his lawyers, the Russian-born entrepreneur faced his third round of questioning since being charged with multiple infractions linked to enabling organised crime. Durov, who holds French and Russian passports, has been accused of complicity in running an online platform that allowed illicit transactions, child sex abuse images and other illegal content. Durov has denied the claims, and his lawyers said in a statement that Monday's full-day session allowed Durov "to provide additional explanations demonstrating the inanity of the facts that are the subject of the investigation". In his initial questioning in December 2024, Durov denied creating Telegram for illicit use but acknowledged a growing criminal presence on the platform, and pledged to strengthen moderation. French judicial authorities have noted an improvement in cooperation with Telegram since Durov's arrest, sources involved in organised crime cases told AFP. Durov, who was initially banned from leaving France, had his judicial control relaxed from early July, allowing him to reside in the United Arab Emirates for a maximum of two weeks at a time. "We firmly contest the legality of our client's indictment and that of the numerous investigative acts carried out in defiance of domestic and European law," his lawyers said in their statement Monday. Police crime intelligence on high alert over alleged plan to reclaim 'land stolen' from Lesotho — Masemola
The police crime intelligence division is investigating allegations of Basotho nationals undergoing military-style training on South African farms to reclaim land 'stolen' from the mountain kingdom. This comes after Lesotho police chief advocate Borotho Matsoso is reported to have confirmed the emergence of a group calling itself 'Malata Naha' which is allegedly recruiting Basotho youth from within the country and abroad to incite insurrection against their government and to fight for the contentious land in South Africa. The land being claimed includes parts of the Free State, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Matsoso's comments come after the recent arrest of Lesotho MP Dr Tshepo Lipholo, leader of the Basotho Covenant Movement, a political party which has been demanding the return of Lesotho's 'stolen land'. The arrest sparked unrest in the country. On Saturday, national commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola said Matsoso's allegations were high on the agenda of a meeting with all nine provincial commissioners to discuss crime combating efforts in the country. 'A preliminary report from the crime intelligence division was discussed in which intelligence structures have highlighted that they have heightened their operations to investigate allegations made and where necessary, track down and take down such illegal activities. 'The DPCI, also known as the Hawks crimes against the state (CATS) unit has also been roped in to investigate. Various searches have been undertaken by CATS at various identified farms and no such evidence has been found to date.' Masemola said he reached out to Matsoso to discuss the allegations and they had agreed that both countries' law enforcement agencies' intelligence structures would investigate the existence of such camps. Masemola said intelligence structures and operatives were on the ground to establish facts and urged South Africans not to panic as police from both countries were on high alert. In 2023, Lipholo tabled a motion for the kingdom to reclaim South African territory that purportedly belonged to Lesotho in precolonial days.
