Andre Pallante fires 7 scoreless innings as Cards rout Marlins

Reuters29-07-2025
July 29 - Andre Pallante allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the visiting Miami Marlins 7-1 Monday night.
Pallante (6-7) struck out four batters and walked one while enjoying quite a turnaround from his previous three starts, when he allowed 18 runs, 17 earned, on 25 hits in 15 2/3 innings.
Masyn Winn went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run and three RBIs for the Cardinals, who won for just the fourth time in 11 games since the All-Star break. Alec Burleson had a homer, two runs and two RBIs.
Marlins starter Edward Cabrera (4-5) allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks in six innings. He fanned four.
Burleson's homer put the Cardinals up 1-0 in the third inning. The 411-foot shot to center was his 14th long ball of the year.
The Marlins threatened in the fourth inning when Jesus Sanchez walked with one out and advanced to second on a groundout. However, Pallante struck out Heriberto Hernandez to strand the runner.
The Cardinals increased their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the inning. Yohel Pozo hit a double, then took third on a wild pitch and scored on catcher Agustin Ramirez's wild throw.
Pallante held the Marlins without a hit until the sixth inning, when Graham Pauley led off with a single to right. Pauley advanced to third on two groundouts before Sanchez hit an inning-ending grounder back to Pallante.
St. Louis' Victor Scott II hit a one-out double in the seventh inning. After Scott stole third base, Brendan Donovan and Ivan Herrera walked to load the bases.
A catcher's interference call with Burleson batting forced in a run. Lake Bachar relieved Josh Simpson on the mound and fanned Willson Contreras before allowing Winn's double that cleared the bases thanks in part to an error by left fielder Hernandez. Jordan Walker's RBI double then increased the Cardinals' lead to 7-0.
The Marlins finally got on the board in the ninth inning when Hernandez hit an RBI single against Matt Svanson.

Son Heung-min admits Los Angeles FC move was not his first choice

Son Heung-min admitted Los Angeles FC were not his first choice destination after he ended a 10-year stay at Tottenham but insisted they had 'changed his heart' on a record Major League Soccer transfer. The 33-year-old on Wednesday completed a move worth in excess of £20million – the highest transfer fee paid by an MLS club – after it was revealed on Saturday he would be leaving Spurs following 173 goals in 454 appearances and months after he captained the club to Europa League glory. Advertisement At an introductory press conference in Los Angeles, the South Korea international admitted he had to be persuaded of the merits of moving to the United States before signing an initial two-year deal. New Beginnings ☀️ Welcome to Los Angeles, Sonny! — LAFC (@LAFC) August 6, 2025 'They've been absolutely working so hard to get me here to join LAFC,' Son said. 'If I'm honest it was not my first choice but John (Thorrington, LAFC general manager) was the first call when the season finished and John changed my mind, he changed my heart. 'I'm so happy to see all the Korean fans, I was at the game and I saw you supporting like crazy and I wanted to run on the pitch and show my performance. I'm here to win and I will perform. 'I will definitely show you something exciting in… are we calling it football or soccer? I will definitely show you some exciting football and we will have success.' Advertisement Son added that the decision to leave Spurs had left him feeling 'very empty'. 'I felt like I gave it all, but I felt like I needed a new chapter and new challenge and I chose LAFC. I'm old but I still have good physicality, good legs and I still have good quality.' Earlier Son had issued an heartfelt message to Tottenham fans on making the 'hardest decision ever' to leave north London. 'How to find the right words for this? I don't know. I have been thinking for days. It's impossible. But here I go,' Son wrote. Advertisement 'It's time for me to say goodbye to Tottenham Hotspur. My home for the past decade. When I arrived in 2015, I didn't speak English, I didn't know London, but you welcomed me with open arms, believed in me, and stood by me through every high and low. 'I was just a boy from Korea with big dreams who was supposed to have no chance. And now, 10 years later, North London is in my heart forever. Dear Spurs fans... Sonny's letter to you 🤍 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 6, 2025 'I've made friends for life here, had the honour of becoming a godfather here, and had the privilege of captaining our special club here. I've poured my heart and soul into this club, which makes this the hardest decision ever. 'I thought if I was ever going to leave, it would have to be on my terms, on the best terms, when our mission had been accomplished together. With pride and honour.' Advertisement Son joined Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen. Alongside old partner in crime Harry Kane, Son holds the record for the most goal involvements by a duo in the Premier League, with the pair assisting each other on a record 47 occasions in the competition. Son's performance helped turn Tottenham into title contenders when they finished second in the Premier League under Mauricio Pochettino in 2017, finishing as runners-up in the Champions League two years later. After Kane left for Bayern Munich, Son became Spurs captain under Ange Postecoglou, lifting the Europa League trophy in May – having come off the bench in the final against Manchester United, a 1-0 Spurs win, after an injury-affected campaign. The popular South Korean will renew acquaintances with Hugo Lloris and move to Los Angeles, which boasts one of the largest Korean populations in the world, ahead of next summer's World Cup in the United States. Josh Naylor, Julio Rodriguez homer as Mariners top White Sox

August 7 - Josh Naylor and Julio Rodriguez homered and George Kirby pitched six quality innings as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting Chicago White Sox 8-6 Wednesday night. Naylor hit a two-run shot in the first inning and Rodriguez added a three-run blast in a five-run second as the Mariners built an early 7-1 lead. Seattle improved to 5-1 on its 10-game homestand and will try to sweep the three-game series with the White Sox on Thursday afternoon. Mike Tauchman, Lenyn Sosa and Michael A. Taylor homered for Chicago, which suffered its third straight loss after winning 10 of its first 14 after the All-Star break. Kirby (7-5) allowed two runs on five hits to win his third straight start and improve to 6-1 in his past seven decisions. The right-hander walked two and struck out nine. Andres Munoz worked the ninth for his 26th save. White Sox starter Jonathan Cannon (4-9) lasted just 1 2/3 innings. The righty gave up seven runs on four hits, walked three and fanned one. Naylor hit a 450-foot shot into the second deck in right field in the first after Cal Raleigh drew a walk. The White Sox got a run back in the second as Luis Robert Jr. singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Raleigh. Curtis Mead lined a run-scoring single to right. In the bottom of the inning, a J.P. Crawford single was sandwiched by walks to Dominic Canzone and Randy Arozarena to load the bases for Raleigh, who lined a two-run single to right. Rodriguez followed with a 434-foot blast high off the out-of-town scoreboard beyond the Mariners' bullpen in left-center. Chicago's Brooks Baldwin led off the third with a single and took second on a wild pitch. He scored on Andrew Benintendi's one-out single to right to make it 7-2. The score stayed that way until the seventh, when Taylor greeted reliever Eduard Bazardo with a leadoff double. An out later, Tauchman and Sosa hit back-to-back homers, both to center, to pull the White Sox within 7-5. The Mariners responded in the bottom of the frame as a one-out walk to Rodriguez was followed by a Naylor single and Eugenio Suarez lifted a sacrifice fly to center. Taylor went deep to right-center off Munoz leading off the ninth for the game's final run. --Field Level Media

Padres rally in ninth to take series from Diamondbacks

August 7 - Ryan O'Hearn tied the game with a leadoff homer in the ninth inning, Jose Iglesias singled in the go-ahead run, and the San Diego Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 in the decisive game of a three-game series on Wednesday in Phoenix. O'Hearn went deep off Kyle Backhus (0-2), his first homer since being acquired by San Diego at the trade deadline. Xander Bogaerts then doubled and was sacrificed to third before scoring on Iglesias' line-drive single to right. Corbin Carroll hit a 443-foot homer in the first inning and Alek Thomas added a sacrifice fly in the second to give Arizona a 2-0 lead, but the Diamondbacks had one hit after Tyler Locklear's single in the second. Padres reliever Adrian Morejon (9-4) gave up one hit in two scoreless innings. Mason Miller struck out three in the ninth while working around a two-out walk for his 21st save, his first since joining San Diego in a deadline deal. Freddy Fermin had three hits for the Padres, who have won nine of 11. Bogaerts homered in the seventh to slice Arizona's lead to 2-1. He went deep for the second consecutive game and has hit six of his nine homers since June 19. The Diamondbacks have lost two in a row and eight of 11. Arizona starter Anthony DeSclafani gave up three hits in 4 1/3 scoreless innings during his third start of the season. He struck out four, issued no walks and was removed with a 2-0 lead. Nestor Cortes gave up two runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings in his first start for the Padres after being obtained at the deadline. He walked three and struck out three. Carroll hit an 0-2 pitch for his 23rd homer for a 1-0 lead as the second batter in the first inning. The D-backs loaded the bases with no outs in the second when Locklear beat out an infield single before Cortes hit Blaze Alexander and James McCann with inside pitches. However, Arizona scored only on Thomas' sacrifice fly. After going 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position in a 10-5, 11-inning loss Tuesday, the D-backs were 0-for-4 in those situations on Wednesday. --Field Level Media
