Russia vows ‘no limits' on nuke missiles in chilling threat to West as tensions rise

Daily Mirrora day ago
A chilling warning has been issued by Russia to the West that it no longer has any "limitations" over its deployment of nuclear missiles as tensions continue to escalate
Russia says it 'no longer has any limitations' over nuclear missile deployment as it upped the ante with a chilling threat to the West.

Setting the stage for a new arms race as tensions between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump escalate, Russia declared that it no longer considers itself bound by a self-imposed moratorium on the positioning of nuclear-capable intermediate range missiles. In a statement Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry linked the decision to efforts by the West to develop intermediate range weapons and preparations for their deployment in Europe and other parts of the world.

It specifically cited US plans to deploy Typhoon and Dark Eagle missiles in Germany starting next year. It comes after Putin warns of nuclear war after unleashing another night of hell on Ukraine.

The ministry noted that placing missiles in Germany created 'destabilizing missile potentials' near Russia, causing a 'direct threat to the security of our country' and carry 'significant harmful consequences for regional and global stability, including a dangerous escalation of tensions between nuclear powers.'
It didn't say what specific moves the Kremlin might take, but Putin has previously announced that Moscow was planning to deploy its new Oreshnik missiles on the territory of its neighbour and ally Belarus later this year.
Asked where and when Russia could potentially deploy intermediate-range weapons, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that it's not something to be announced in advance, reports The Sun.

'Russia no longer has any limitations, Russia no longer considers itself to be constrained by anything,' Peskov told reporters. 'Therefore Russia believes it has the right to take respective steps if necessary."
While the Foreign Ministry said: 'Decisions on specific parameters of response measures will be made by the leadership of the Russian Federation based on an interdepartmental analysis of the scale of deployment of American and other Western land-based intermediate-range missiles, as well as the development of the overall situation in the area of international security and strategic stability."

Trump's announced on Friday that he would reposition two US nuclear submarines 'based on the highly provocative statements' of Dmitry Medvedev. Trump's statement came as his deadline for the Kremlin to reach a peace deal in Ukraine approaches later this week.
Trump said he was alarmed by Medvedev's attitude. Medvedev, who serves as deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council chaired by Putin, has apparently sought to curry favour with his mentor by making provocative statements and frequently lobbing nuclear threats.
Last week, he responded to Trump's deadline for Russia to accept a peace deal in Ukraine or face sanctions by warning him against 'playing the ultimatum game with Russia' and declaring that 'each new ultimatum is a threat and a step toward war.'

Medvedev also commented on the Foreign Ministry's statement, describing Moscow's withdrawal from the moratorium as 'the result of NATO countries' anti-Russian policy.'
'This is a new reality all our opponents will have to reckon with,' he wrote on X. 'Expect further steps.'
Intermediate-range missiles can fly between 310 to 3,400 miles. Such land-based weapons were banned under the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

Trump withdrew from the pact in his first term, citing Russian violations, which Moscow denied. It, in turn, alleged the U.S. had committed violations. The treaty was terminated in 2019, but the Kremlin declared its self-imposed moratorium on their deployment until the U.S. makes such a move.
The collapse of the INF Treaty has stoked fears of a replay of a Cold War-era European missile crisis, when the U.S. and the Soviet Union both deployed intermediate-range missiles on the continent in the 1980s.
Such weapons are seen as particularly destabilizing because they take less time to reach targets, compared with intercontinental ballistic missiles, leaving no time for decision-makers and raising the likelihood of a global nuclear conflict over a false launch warning.
Russia's missile forces chief has declared that the new Oreshnik intermediate range missile, which Russia first used against Ukraine in November, has a range to reach all of Europe. Oreshnik can carry conventional or nuclear warheads.
Putin has praised the Oreshnik's capabilities, saying its multiple warheads that plunge to a target at speeds up to Mach 10 are immune to being intercepted and are so powerful that the use of several of them in one conventional strike could be as devastating as a nuclear attack.
The Russian leader has warned the West that Moscow could use it against Ukraine's NATO allies who allowed Kyiv to use their longer-range missiles to strike inside Russia.

Report: Trump to meet Putin face-to-face as soon as next week

President Donald Trump is planning to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin as soon as next week and could bring the Russian leader face-to-face with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump shared this pitch on a phone call with European leaders Wednesday, The New York Times reported , after his special envoy Steve Witkoff met in-person with Putin at the Kremlin earlier in the day. In recent months, Trump has expressed disgust with Putin's continued bombing campaigns of Ukraine, despite being in contact with the U.S. leader. Trump hinted, however, there had been a breakthrough during Witkoff's meeting. In his social media post, he did not disclose the potential planned meeting with Putin and a possible Trump-Putin-Zelensky summit. 'Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come,' Trump said, using his trademark closing, 'Thank you for your attention to this matter!' Zelensky and Witkoff were on Trump's call with European leaders, which included NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also joined. Trump said the meetings would only include himself, Putin and Zelensky, The Times report said, with the European leaders appearing to accept the American leader's plan. The Republican president hasn't met in-person with Putin since November 2018, when they engaged in an informal conversation on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires.

Since, Trump is understood to have told European leaders including Sir Keir Starmer that he could meet with Putin, before a potential trilateral meeting with the Ukrainian president. European shares end flat as healthcare stocks weigh after Trump's tariff threat

Meanwhile, Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss potential trade solutions after Trump announced a 39% tariff on Swiss goods. Bayer ( opens new tab shares tumbled 9.9% on investor concerns that the German pharmaceutical firm's earnings were inflated by soccer player transfer fees rather than supported by its core healthcare and agriculture businesses. On the data front, Euro zone retail sales grew quicker than thought in June, reinforcing views that the 27-nation bloc remains resilient to trade uncertainty. Among others, Beiersdorf ( opens new tab fell 8.4% and was among top decliners after the German consumer goods maker cut its annual organic sales growth outlook.
