68-yr-old man falls into coma after surgery

T'puram: Police began probe into a 68-year-old Vattiyoorkavu native going into a coma stage allegedly after undergoing a surgery at SP Fort Hospital in Enchakkal. The relatives of Nandakumar filed a complaint with Vanchiyoor police, against the neurosurgeon for medical negligence. A case was registered on Sunday under BNS Section 125 for a negligent act that endangers human life or affects the personal safety. Nandakumar was admitted to the hospital on May 16 with age-related illnesses and the doctors found a haemorrhage in the brain during scanning. A surgery was recommended and the very next day he underwent the procedure. The relatives alleged in the complaint that he faded into a coma soon after the surgery and that there was a serious lapse by the doctors who performed the surgery. "A case has been registered. Medical negligence probes must be conducted by a DSP-ranked officer," police said. Since the case is in connection with medical negligence, police has to depend on report of a medical board or DMO to proceed further. TNN

A Night on the Streets: U-Turn raises over R1 million to tackle homelessness

Participants in U-Turn's 'A Night on the Street' campaign bed down outside SMG BMW Cape Town. Image: Ian Landsberg/Independent Media In a powerful show of solidarity, compassion, and community, U-Turn's nights on the Streets campaign raised over R1 million to support homeless rehabilitation programs across South Africa. This brings the combined total for the 2024 and 2025 campaigns to a remarkable R1.922 million. The event, held on May 17 at BMW SMG in Cape Town, was more than a fundraiser; it was a night of storytelling, empathy, and collective action. Attendees gave up their comfort for one night to sleep outside, connecting with the lived experiences of those who face homelessness every day. 'This kind of sacrifice speaks volumes about your character and your hearts,' said Matthew James, Dealer Principal of SMG BMW, who also confirmed the final total. 'I can't believe I'm about to say this, but we have raised R1,125,000.' Colleen Lewis, U-Turn's founder, shared the deeply personal story of how the movement began on her own pavement in 1997. 'It started with just one ordinary woman from the 'burbs who had the love of Jesus in her heart,' she said. 'One person can make a difference.' Her story of two individuals living on the street led to a transformation that now serves thousands each year through U-Turn's recovery model. Jean-Ray Knighton-Fitt, U-Turn's CEO, described the night as an act of empathy rather than a simulation of street life. 'We're not trying to experience what it is to be homeless, but in some small way, we will wake up tomorrow morning different,' he said. 'U-Turn looks at each person as a person of value, with potential, and the ability to overcome their circumstances.' The evening also featured powerful remarks from Lance Witten, Editor-in-Chief of Independent Online, U-Turn's media partner. He spoke about IOL's Elevate Her campaign, which aims to highlight and humanise the stories of homeless individuals, particularly women. He recalled the story of Patricia Geyser, who was reunited with her daughter after 27 years through a video. 'That's the power that we have as media. And it is our responsibility to use that power,' he said Leila Suleiman introduced the MyChange voucher system, an innovative program that allows individuals to give responsibly. 'It's giving someone a hand up, not just a hand down,' she said, explaining how vouchers are exchanged at U-Turn centers for food, clothing, showers, or safe spaces. Participants also took part in 'voucher earning' activities, mirroring the steps U-Turn clients go through to access support services, and were rewarded with meals and blankets using earned vouchers. The event was closed with a stirring musical performance by 'As One', a group whose heartfelt songs provided a powerful and emotional soundtrack to the evening, echoing the night's themes of dignity, hope, and transformation. As the lights dimmed and attendees settled in for their night outside, a message echoed through the courtyard: 'This isn't just about sleeping outside. It's about seeing the humanity in someone else. It's about being a thread in the broken fabric of society, sewing it back together.' From the founders to the funders, from the storytellers to the singers, A Night on the Street 2025 was a celebration of empathy in action, and a resounding declaration that no one is too small to make a difference. The first designed-in-Singapore wine glasses just won a major international design award

It all began, fittingly, over a drink. About two years ago, several wine industry insiders, including Thoo Lee Ming, founder of homegrown glassware company SKLO, and Gerald Lu, president of the Sommelier Association of Singapore and co-owner of Praelum Wine Bistro, were trading notes (and sips) about the ongoing struggle to find a wine tasting glass that actually met their needs. What started as casual banter evolved into something far more ambitious — a project that led to the creation of two universal tasting glasses called the SKLO Evolution 50 and 125. This collaboration clinched the 2025 Red Dot Award in Product Design in the tableware category. This marks the first time a Singapore-designed stemware has received this honour, joining global icons like the Apple iPhone 13 and Maserati MC20 and homegrown design triumphs like the Morning coffee machine and OSIM uPamper 2. 'Let's design a stemware that we, as professionals, can be proud of,' Thoo declared. 'Wine is more than just a drink; it is an experience, and the right glass can elevate that.' That idea sparked an intense collaboration between SKLO, the Sommelier Association of Singapore (SAS), and Kvetna 1794, a revered Czech glassware manufacturer whose stemware SKLO had been distributing since 2022. Founded in 1794, Kvetna is one of Europe's oldest glassworks, known for its exceptional lead-free handmade crystal, crafted using traditional techniques passed down through generations. It has also made collections for several highly regarded drinkware brands. Kvetna's master artisans played a key role in bringing this vision to life, hand-blowing and fine-tuning each prototype by eye and feel. 'The artisans at Kvetna 1794 have preserved a legacy of fine craftsmanship for over two centuries. This collaboration represents the first time Singapore has made its mark in stemware design by blending their insights with European glassmaking heritage,' said Michal Florus, global sales manager at Kvetna 1794. What followed was a meticulous design process over the tiniest of details like the size of the tulip-shaped bowls, the angle of the taper, ultra-thin rims and even the velocity of a swirl. Every element was shaped by a shared obsession to enhance all aspects of wine appreciation from structure and aromatics to flavour clarity. The goal? To create the perfect glass not just for wine, but for sake, spirits, and even the pickiest sommeliers. 'More uniquely, we looked at how to improve torque and velocity, maximise impact aromas and minimise aromatic loss,' said Lu. This trial-and-error process proved eye-opening. 'It really put Kvetna's production capabilities to the test,' said Florus. The glassmakers produced dozens of nearly identical prototypes — some differing by just a tenth of a millimetre — so the team could fine-tune even the most minute details. With a mix of admiration and guilt, both Lu and Thoo recalled how the artisans sustained cuts on their hands when working on the ultra-thin rims. 'But not once did they ask us to compromise on the design,' said Lu. Lu also mobilised the 200-strong sommelier community to gather feedback and conduct tastings, ensuring the prototypes held up in real-world settings. It took four phases of meticulous refinements over a year before the final design emerged. The glasses were then put on trial for two months, undergoing rigorous real-world testing — including washing, cleaning and hygiene checks — before production was greenlit. The result? The Evolution series, comprising two elegantly proportioned glasses. The 125ml glass is a universal wine glass, equally adept at showcasing red, white and sparkling wines. At a recent media tasting, many of Singapore's top food and wine writers expressed genuine surprise at how it enhanced the complexity and nose of the vino. Meanwhile, the 50ml version is designed for tasting pours, thoughtfully scaled to highlight the depth of spirits like cognac, whiskey, sherry and even Asian tipples like sake and baijiu, making it a true multitasker in a sommelier's arsenal. For Thoo, the Red Dot win is a validation of the team's vision. 'We are excited to be recognised with such an extensive group of global design alumni. The most recent glassware winner was Josephine by Josephinenhutte, and to be placed alongside such a renowned designer and brand is spectacular.' He also sees it as a nod to Singapore's growing role in global design. 'Singapore has been advocating itself as a centre of excellence for design over the past one to two decades. We are proud to be part of this value chain — using design to differentiate, elevate our brand position, and bring something new to consumers and the industry.'

Robbie Wageman returns to racing in 16th annual 2-Stroke Challenge

After missing the start of the Monster Energy Supercross season due to a wrist injury ahead of the season opener at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, this January, Robbie Wageman returns to racing in the 16th annual 2-Stroke World Championship on April 19, 2025, at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California. Wageman will compete on Yamaha's 2025 125cc and 250cc two-stroke models with livery inspired by Jeremy McGrath from his late 1990s through early 2000s era. 'I'm hoping all those '80s and '90s kids are going to dig this,' said Team Solitaire's Chris Elliott in a news release. 'I grew up watching McGrath, and I don't think I ever saw a bad photo of the guy. It wasn't just his riding - it was the full package. I hope we never stop celebrating what he did for moto in the '90s and early 2000s. Huge thanks to Yamaha and our partners for letting us have fun with this.' The Heartbeat Hot Sauce team's tribute bridges the gap between the iconic days when McGrath was in the midst of winning 72 premier class wins, seven 250 Supercross championships, a 250 Motocross title, and two 125 SX West championships until today's Modern Era. The livery showcases custom-painted helmets and gear designed by N-Style, but modernized by Works Connection, Dirt Tricks, Race Tech Titanium, and others. Fans who cannot attend Glen Helen this weekend can watch the race on the Dirtbike Magazine YouTube channel beginning 2:00 p.m. ET. A preview of the event is available on the channel. Follow the team on Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter) for a behind-the-scenes look and full project build list. Years later, it's still hard to beat that classic blue Yamaha look (Dylan Kelley / Team Solitaire).
