Nurul Izzah and husband depart for haj pilgrimage [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Nurul Izzah Anwar and her husband, Yin Shao Loong, were given a send-off at the airport before departing for their haj pilgrimage recently. A TikTok fan page named @nurulizzah_fans shared a 30-second video showing the couple making their way to the departure gate at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The clip, uploaded three days ago included a heartfelt caption praying for a blessed pilgrimage. "O Allah, make their pilgrimage a blessed and accepted one, their Sa'i a deed that You accept, and their acts of worship righteous and pleasing to You," the caption says. Nurul Izzah, recently elected as the new deputy president of PKR after defeating Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli in the May 23 party elections, announced her intention to perform the pilgrimage during the PKR National Congress last month. Upon her return, she is expected to focus on strengthening internal party unity and with an eye on preparations for the 16th General Election (GE16) and the Sabah election.

Ayer Hitam MCA passes resolution to retain Dr Wee, Ling as GE16 candidates

YONG PENG: Local MCA leaders in the Ayer Hitam division of Johor have passed resolutions for current MP Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and Yong Peng state assemblyman Ling Tian Soon to be renominated to contest the 16th General Election. These were among six resolutions that were passed during the division's annual general meeting, which was attended by MCA president Dr Wee and Ling, who is also MCA Youth chief. The other resolutions that were approved by the some 200 delegates on Sunday (June 1) were to support Dr Wee to steer the party back to its former glory amidst political instability as party president. They also want Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi to continue leading the state and Johor Barisan Nasional. The division also urged the Education Ministry to review the new matriculation entry requirement, where those who scored A- in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia are not considered to have attained an A, and also explain why Chinese schools were given lower allocations in last year's budget.

Nurul Izzah must prove she's more than just 'Anwar's daughter'

SHAH ALAM - The outcome of the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) election, which saw incumbent Deputy President Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli defeated by Nurul Izzah Anwar, was anticipated from the outset. This change indirectly reflects not only an internal power shift but also the grassroots' desire for a more harmonious and less confrontational approach in the post-15th General Election (GE15) political landscape. However, with less than 30 months remaining until the 16th General Election (GE16), the success of the new leadership, now leaning towards a 'politik kasih sayang' (politics of love) approach, must be tested in its ability to unite the party machinery and regain support from young voters and the middle class. Although Nurul Izzah is seen as having a clean, progressive and inclusive image, her main challenge lies in rebuilding the grassroots structure, which has appeared weakened since PKR joined the government. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) political analyst Professor Datuk Dr Sivamurugan Pandian believes the first action the party's new leadership should take is to reconcile and consolidate its ranks to face the real political opponents outside the party. He said this step is especially important ahead of GE16, which will be the real battlefield for gauging public support for the party led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'PKR must also show that the party is bigger than any individual by ensuring national political stability is maintained. Today, PKR is the ruling party alongside other coalitions under the Unity Government. 'They must also increase the level of loyalty or 'wala' to the party. Although PKR is open, and practises democracy and freedom, the party's identity and ideology must be preserved. 'Perhaps within the next 30 months, the new team must unveil strategic issues to strengthen the party in addressing sentiments and perceptions that may have been tarnished following Rafizi's faction's defeat,' he told Sinar Harian. In the PKR election for the 2025–2028 term, Rafizi, who is also the Pandan Member of Parliament, lost to Anwar's eldest daughter by a majority of nearly 6,000 votes. For the record, the Economy Minister had previously lost to Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali in the contest for the same position in 2018. Based on current developments, Sivamurugan opined that it is crucial for Nurul Izzah, as the new Deputy President, to prove that she is not merely 'Anwar's star', but a figure with credibility, reputation, authority and the capacity to carry the responsibilities of the position, beyond family ties perceived by outsiders. He said a more moderate and balanced political approach could be promoted as a key agenda by ensuring the party is strengthened through various leadership layers so that generational gaps and evolving expectations may be bridged. Meanwhile, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Media and Information Studies Psychological Warfare Centre political analyst Dr Noor Nirwandy Mat Noordin said Nurul Izzah's victory should be acknowledged by society and PKR members, as it reflects the delegates' will to choose the current leadership. He also noted that society has high expectations to see reform elements that could benefit both the public and party members. 'It is a new challenge for the PKR leadership to ensure the party remains relevant in the country's political arena, as well as to better align the party's interests with government machinery. 'This is also a necessary preparation, as GE16 is expected to be more challenging given the openness, the influence of social media algorithms, and artificial intelligence, which may become strategies in psychological warfare. 'It is important for all politicians, including PKR leadership, to be aware of this as it will shape the direction of the country's political future,' he said. PKR's strategist cannot be sidelined Rafizi's role as the 'architect strategist' of PKR's campaign machinery cannot be overlooked, as he has proven to be the most effective strategist the party has had. Despite the current challenges, Sivamurugan said the former right-hand man of Anwar should be persuaded to continue playing a different role within the party. 'Perhaps there will be disappointment for a while, including among his supporters, but PKR cannot deny that Rafizi has played a major role in its success so far. 'The Deputy President position is only for one person, but beyond position, rank and status, he remains significant and can still contribute. Perhaps the president (Anwar) could consider offering him another position. 'The question is whether Rafizi is willing to take on another role, as during campaigning he expressed a desire to resign from his Cabinet post. Therefore, the party must consider what further steps should be taken to ensure disappointed members do not cause disruption—not only now, but also during the next election,' he said. Meanwhile, Sivamurugan expects the Pandan MP to continue strategising in other ways to remain active in politics, as Rafizi is known for being a vocal and open individual. 'Perhaps he will continue his agenda through podcasts while waiting for the situation to stabilise and reassess the need to return to politics,' he added.

Nurul Izzah aims to raise number of women, youth candidates

JOHOR BARU: PKR is looking at drawing at least 40% of its general election candidates from women and the youth, says its newly-minted deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar. 'We have another 24 months as we head to the 16th General Election, and we want at least 40% of the candidates to be represented by women and youths. 'We also have to look at how we can introduce reforms within the party to be more future-ready. 'The party has to remain strong and maintain its ideals,' she told reporters after the PKR national congress here yesterday. Nurul Izzah said having more balanced representation in electoral candidates is among her three focus areas after becoming the party's number two. Asked whether she has reached out to Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who failed to defend his post from her challenge, Nurul Izzah did not answer the question directly, but said members would often meet and offer reminders to each other. 'To Rafizi, and to all those who contested, who won or lost, the important thing is to maintain our friendship and loyalty and principles,' she said. Earlier, in her maiden speech, Nurul Izzah said she will be involved in the party's preparation for the upcoming Sabah election – which must be held by this year – before she heads to Mecca to perform the haj. 'I call on all party members to get involved as we have a minimum target of 13 seats. 'It will be an uphill task for us not only externally but also internally,' she said. She urged members to come together to make sure the party doesn't lose its ideals, especially since PKR is in the government. 'Some even asked how would I make a difference, but the real question is how do we make a difference together,' she said. Nurul Izzah added that she wants to see female support towards PKR in the upcoming general election to increase from the current 40%, and noted the importance of reaching out to youths and to give them a platform.

PKR must remain a central force in govt

JOHOR BAHRU: PKR Vice-President Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the party election results clearly indicate the party's and the country's future direction. The Selangor Menteri Besar said the new leadership line-up must play a key role in ensuring that PKR remains a central force in the country's administration moving forward. 'After going through a challenging and intense process, we are now at the final stage to conclude the National Congress. This means we have established a new layer of leadership to bear the aspirations of party members and Malaysians,' he said. He said this when winding up the debate on the president's policy speech during the PKR National Congress 2024/2025 at the Persada International Convention Centre here today. Amirudin, also the Selangor Leadership Council chairman, said the new leadership must also be prepared to ensure PKR remains relevant in government and continues to support the leadership of party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in his second term as Prime Minister. Vice-President Datuk Seri R. Ramanan stressed the urgent need for all party members to regain control of the narrative and public perception on social media ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16). He claimed that after assuming the government position, PKR grew too comfortable and overlooked the importance of strategic communication on digital platforms, leaving it vulnerable to slander from opponents. 'I am confident that with the right strategy and coordinated efforts, we can reclaim the social media arena, secure victory for Pakatan Harapan in the GE16, and ensure Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim remains as Prime Minister,' he added. Meanwhile, Vice President Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun proposed that three key issues causing public concern, namely e-invoicing implementation, gas subsidy adjustments for small traders, and petrol prices rationalisation, must be urgently addressed, warning that failure to do so could risk eroding public support ahead of the general election. Vice-President Chang Lih Kang called on all PKR members to refocus their efforts on winning the GE16 and the upcoming Sabah state election. 'Our focus as a political party is to win elections. We must work hard to ensure PKR remains in the federal government and that our president continues to serve as Prime Minister,' he said while challenging the PKR's Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) youth wing to immediately begin groundwork in tough constituencies where the party has yet to establish a strong foothold. Meanwhile, AMK chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim said each PKR member is responsible for effectively communicating the government's policies and initiatives, as many members of the public remain unaware of the benefits available to them. Wanita PKR chief Fadhlina Sidek also reminded all members to remain loyal and fully trust the new leadership to lead the party to greater heights.
