Malaysia urges ASEAN unity for maritime stability amid rising threats
GEORGE TOWN: Malaysia has called for ASEAN member states to unite in safeguarding regional maritime stability, warning that inaction could invite external interference. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin stressed the urgency of addressing mounting maritime challenges through collaboration. 'If ASEAN does not act now, our maritime stability will be severely compromised,' he said during his keynote address at the 19th ASEAN Navy Chiefs' Meeting. He warned against fragmentation, urging nations to turn dialogue into action to prevent destabilisation in Southeast Asia. The minister highlighted complex maritime threats, including territorial disputes, illegal fishing, and cyber intrusions. Mohamed Khaled outlined three priority areas to strengthen ASEAN's maritime cooperation framework. He emphasised upholding ASEAN's neutrality amid external pressures like grey-zone tactics and foreign incursions. 'ASEAN must remain the anchor of maritime order in our region,' he said, citing UNCLOS 1982 as the foundation for cooperation. Secondly, he proposed practical initiatives like the ASEAN Maritime Innovation Challenge to foster problem-solving among young naval officers. The ASEAN Naval Sport Cup was also suggested to enhance regional camaraderie through maritime sports. A region-wide naval project was proposed to boost technology adoption and human capital development. Thirdly, Mohamed Khaled advocated a Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Society approach to counter modern maritime threats. He described WOGOS as essential for integrating defence, diplomacy, and enforcement across agencies. The 19th ANCM, chaired by Malaysian Navy chief Admiral Tan Sri Datuk Dr Zulhelmy Ithnain, runs until August 22. The meeting focuses on strengthening ASEAN naval unity through innovation and technology. Delegates from all 10 ASEAN nations, plus Timor-Leste observers, are attending the event. Ten ASEAN naval ships and 1,350 personnel are participating in the ASEAN Multilateral Naval Exercise segment. - Bernama

Bar Leone wins 2025 Spirited Awards' Best International Cocktail Bar
Hot on the heels of an impressive triumph at the Asia's 50 Best Bars awards ceremony earlier last month, where Bar Leone was once again crowned number one bar in Asia – holding its enviable position at the top of the list for the second year running – co-founder Lorenzo Antinori has yet another shiny accolade to add to his growing collection. At the 19th annual Spirited Awards held in New Orleans on July 24, and hosted by the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation (TOTCF), Hong Kong's Bar Leone was named the Best International Cocktail Bar of 2025. Not one to do things by halves, mixologist extraordinaire Antinori made the occasion a double victory by also securing the International Bartender of the Year award, cementing Bar Leone's already mighty reputation in the competitive drinks industry. Building on the 2025 theme of the Tales of the Cocktail conference, 'Evolve', the Spirited Awards recognises game changers who pioneer innovation, transformation, and evolution in the cocktail community through remarkable creativity and bold vision. Bar Leone's continued success on a global stage further elevates Hong Kong's prestigious position in the world of mixology, firmly placing the city as a leading player in the international spirits and hospitality scene. From Bar Leone debuting at a coveted number two spot on the World's 50 Best Bars 2024 rankings, to unveiling a dynamic new concept with the Cuban-inspired Montana, Antinori has plenty more surprises and ambitions up his sleeves. We'll raise a glass – or many – to that!

'I'm not into fashion like that, but I've always had a dream to be a model one day. I always wanted to be on the runway,' the rapper said. He says being an ambassador of a fashion brand had its challenges. 'Getting dressed and putting on new clothes and all of that; that was a little bit tricky for me since I'm camera-shy. I'm not too comfortable when it comes to being on camera,' said the rapper, adding that being in front of the camera is different from recording in studio. 'Recording in studio is one thing, going outside to perform the song in front of like 2000 people is one thing. But like cameras… I'm not doing what I'm really good at, I'm still new,' he said. 'I'm very honoured to be in that position, to actually be like the guy who's gonna be a bridge when it comes to fashion and music…a lot of guys have been doing it, but they do it by making clothes and stuff. I can make clothes, but I just wanna rap.' Sara Duterte questions impeachment case crossing over to 20th Congress
'Kinu-question din namin 'yan, 'yung pag-crossover from the 19th to the 20th Congress,' Duterte said in an interview in The Hague, Netherlands on June 3, Tuesday. Vice President Sara Duterte is questioning whether the articles of impeachment filed against her in the Senate in the 19th Congress may be taken up by the chamber sitting as an impeachment court in the 20th Congress. 'Kinu-question din namin 'yan, 'yung pag-crossover from the 19th to the 20th Congress,' Duterte said in an interview in The Hague, Netherlands on June 3, Tuesday. (We're also questioning the crossover of the trial from the 19th to 20th Congress.) She, however, refrained from expounding the matter, saying that she would leave it up to her legal team. ''Yung lawyers ko na lang magsalita kasi papagalitan na naman ako nila. Papagalitan na naman ako no'n, 'yung mga lawyers ko. So tanong natin 'yung lawyers,' she added. (I'll let my lawyers talk about that. They will scold me again if I answer, so let's ask my lawyers.) On Wednesday, Sen. Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa said that he was behind a resolution on the dismissal of the impeachment case against Sara Duterte. Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero last week announced that the reading of the impeachment raps would be postponed from June 2 to June 11. The 19th Congress will adjourn sine die on June 14. The Vice President went to The Hague to visit her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained in the Scheveningen Prison for charges of crimes against humanity for the extrajudicial killings during his administration's war on drugs. While in the Netherlands, Sara Duterte admitted that she was not able to monitor the developments regarding the impeachment proceedings in the Philippines due to the time difference. 'Pero ang pagkakaintindi ko ay maraming procedural lapses na nangyayari na labag sa Constitution,' she added. (But as far as I understand, there are many procedural lapses happening that are against the Constitution.) Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives on February 5, with over 200 lawmakers endorsing the complaint against her. She was accused of betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the constitution, graft and corruption, and other high crimes. –NB, GMA Integrated News
