Woman who accused Jay-Z of rape heard on recording saying lawyer pushed her to sue

The woman who said she was 13 when Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter and Sean "Diddy" Combs sexually assaulted her after the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards is heard on a recording agreeing Jay-Z did not assault her and saying her lawyer pushed her to sue Jay-Z. The woman's lawsuit against Jay-Z and Combs has since been withdrawn with prejudice, meaning it cannot be revived. The recording, an excerpt of which was obtained by ABC News, is between the woman, identified as Jane Doe, and two private investigators associated with Carter. "Yeah," Jane Doe replied. Carter's attorney, Alex Spiro, denies that Jay-Z has ever met Jane Doe. In the recording, the woman is heard telling the investigators that her lawyer, Tony Buzbee, put her up to suing Jay-Z. MORE: Civil case accusing Jay-Z, Diddy of raping 13-year-old girl voluntarily dismissed "He was the one that kind of pushed me towards going forward with him, with Jay-Z," the woman is heard saying. "Buzbee did?" the investigators asked. "Yeah," the woman replied. Buzbee called the idea that he pushed her into suing Jay-Z a "blatant lie." "As far as the suggestion that I pushed Jane Doe to bring a case against Jay Z - That is a blatant lie that is directly contrary to all the documentary evidence," Buzbee said in a statement provided to ABC News. Carter's attorney said "the tape speaks for itself" and should leave no doubt about his innocence. "She says in no uncertain terms Mr. Carter did not do this. It's effectively a lie and the only reason Mr. Carter is even involved in this is because she was pushed to involve him," Spiro told ABC News in an exclusive interview. Jane Doe has said, in a sworn declaration, she stands by her claims and dropped her lawsuit because of "fear of intimidation and retaliation from Jay-Z" and his fans. She also denied telling the investigators Buzbee sought her out as a client or that he encouraged her to pursue a false claim against Jay-Z. She said she felt "intimidated and terrified" at being confronted on her doorstep and that the investigators knew her name and address. Spiro said the investigators who approached Jane Doe did not coerce or threaten her. "She voluntarily met, spoke to them and she told them her truth, which was under no circumstances did Mr. Carter do this," Spiro said. Jay-Z, who has sold more than 140 million albums, is one of the world's best-selling artists. He is married to Beyoncé and they share three children. His attorney said that this has impacted the Carter family. "It's tough to hear a false lie said about you, spread through the internet, and affecting your children," Spiro said. "It's tough on him. It's tough on anybody. But what he does is he proves himself innocent. Today is hopefully the final chapter in that. And then they're gonna move forward. That's what Jay does." Carter is now suing Jane Doe and Tony Buzbee for defamation, which they deny. "The truth had to fully come out. This person cannot be allowed to sort of hide from the reality that this was a false accusation," Spiro said. Jay-Z sues former accuser for defamation

Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter filed a defamation suit Monday against an Alabama woman who claimed he raped her when she was 13 in a since-withdrawn civil lawsuit. Carter's lawsuit said the woman, identified as Jane Doe, timed her claim "to inflict maximum pain and suffering on Mr. Carter" to extort payments from him. The lawsuit also named the woman's attorneys, Tony Buzbee and David Fortney, whom Jay-Z alleged "were soullessly motivated by greed, in abject disregard of the truth and the most fundamental precepts of human decency." MORE: Civil case accusing Jay-Z, Diddy of raping 13-year-old girl voluntarily dismissed The woman initially claimed that Jay-Z and Sean "Diddy" Combs took turns sexually assaulting her when she was 13 at a party following the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. Both men denied the allegation. Jane Doe withdrew her lawsuit last month after Carter raised questions about the veracity of her account and his attorney sought sanctions against Buzbee. MORE: Woman who accused Diddy and Jay-Z of raping her can remain anonymous for now, judge rules "Doe has now voluntarily admitted directly to representatives of Mr. Carter that the story brought before the world in court and on global television was just that: a false, malicious story. She has admitted that Mr. Carter did not assault her; and that indeed it was Buzbee himself … who pushed her to go forward with the false narrative of the assault by Mr. Carter in order to leverage a maximum payday," Carter's defamation lawsuit said. "But the extortion and abuse of Mr. Carter by Doe and her lawyers must stop," it continued. In response, Buzbee released a statement saying, 'Shawn Carter's investigators have repeatedly harassed, threatened and harangued this poor woman for weeks trying to intimidate her and make her recant her story. She hasn't, and won't. Instead she has stated repeatedly she stands by her claims. These same group of investigators have been caught on tape offering to pay people to sue me and my firm. After speaking with Jane Doe today, it appears that the quotes attributed to her in the lawsuit are completely made up, or they spoke to someone who isn't Jane Doe." He added, "This is just another attempt to intimidate and bully this poor woman that we will deal with in due course. We won't be bullied or intimidated by frivolous cases.' Jay-Z received death threats in response to rape allegation

Jay-Z and his wife Beyoncé were sent death threats after the rapper was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl. The 55-year-old star and Sean 'Diddy' Combs had been accused by an unnamed woman of drugging and raping her at an after-party for the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards in New York City when she was a teenager, but the lawsuit was dismissed last week, though the '99 Problems' hitmaker is pressing ahead with legal action against his accuser's attorney, Tony Buzbee, for emotional distress. And in a declaration to the court obtained by the Rock Nation founder argued the lawyer's "public statements about me and accusations against me have caused me harm" and detailed the threats he and his wife had received. He wrote: "People have said 'I can't wait until you join (Combs) in prison. Then later in hell.' "Other comments have accused me of being a 'satanist', a 'trafficker', a 'terrorist', and a 'monster', called me the N-word and threatened violence against me and my wife, including to 'kill' or 'execute' us." It was previously revealed Jay - who has daughter Blue Ivy, 13, and twins Rumi and Sir, seven, with wife Beyonce - alleged he had lost $20 million in contracts since the lawsuit was filed in October 2024. And he accused the lawyer of purposely inflicting emotional distress by deliberately filing the complaint the evening before his daughter's movie premiere for 'Mufasa: The Lion King' to "put me in the position of having to choose between supporting my daughter or hiding to avoid the negative press." He wrote in the declaration: "I felt that Mr. Buzbee was placing a gun to my head that I either bow to his demands or endure personal and financial ruin." Jay - whose real name is Shawn Carter - filed the suit against Buzbee for civil extortion, defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress several months ago but only submitted his declaration this week. After the rape case was dismissed with prejudice, the Roc Nation founder hit out at the "trauma" it had caused for his family. He said in a statement: "Today is a victory. The frivolous, fictitious and appalling allegations have been dismissed. This civil suit was without merit and never going anywhere. "The fictional tale they created was laughable, if not for the seriousness of the claims. I would not wish this experience on anyone. The trauma that my wife, my children, loved ones and I have endured can never be dismissed. 'The court must protect victims, OF COURSE, while with the same ethical responsibility, the courts must protect the innocent from being accused without a shred of evidence. May the truth prevail for all victims and those falsely accused equally.' Jay has always denied the allegations and had made several attempts through his lawyer to kill the case or force the woman to be publicly identified. Buzbee's firm is representing more than 100 alleged victims of Combs, and has filed a flood of suits against Diddy since he was jailed in September to await trial on charges including sex trafficking and racketeering – all of which he denies.
