TV and Film Writing Jobs Grew More Scarce, Even If Earnings Were Up Slightly in 2024
It came as no surprise to anyone when the Writers Guild of America West's 2023 annual financial report showed that television and film writers' earnings and employment had declined the same year that union members waged a 148-day strike against studios and streamers. But one year later, in a work stoppage-free environment, employment dipped further than their strike-era levels, even as earnings slightly rebounded. That's according to the union's 2024 annual financial report, released Friday to members and reviewed by The Hollywood Reporter. More from The Hollywood Reporter Writers Guild East Members Ratify First Union Contract at Story Syndicate (Exclusive) Michele Mulroney Running (Unopposed, for Now) to Lead Writers Guild West Writers Guild East Files Another Unfair Labor Practice Charge Against ITV (Exclusive) The document finds that in 2024 the total number of WGA West members reporting earnings fell 9.4 percent compared with the prior year and 24.3 percent from 2022. At $1.5 billion, members' total earnings rose 12.7 percent compared with 2023, but were still 21 percent below 2022's $1.9 billion. It's the latest sign of Hollywood companies reducing their output in a post-Peak TV, post-strikes world as a more cautious and risk-averse business culture has taken hold. 'We anticipate 2024's numbers to increase in subsequent reports, with late reporting to increase the number of writers employed to a level similar to 2023,' the union's annual report stated. 'Still, it is clear that the number of jobs has declined from peak years, caused by the companies' pullback in number of streaming projects on top of prior declines in linear programming.' The employment declines were steepest in television and digital platforms as well as in news, promotion, informational and interactive programming. Television and digital platform writer employment dropped nearly 11 percent between 2023 and 2024 and 28.5 percent from 2022. The WGA West represents thousands of writers in that category; on a smaller scale, news, promotion, informational and interactive programming writers dropped from 108 in 2022 to 94 in 2023 to 80 in 2024, a decline of nearly 26 percent. In television, writer earnings rose 12.3 percent in 2024 compared with the year prior, but dropped 25 percent when weighed against 2022. In its news and promotion category, earnings dropped 9.3 percent compared with 2023 and 1.1 percent from 2022. Writer employment fared better in theatrical films. The decline in 2024 compared with 2023 was only three percent but 16.2 percent in relation to 2022. The hit to earnings in film compared with two years prior wasn't as stark as in television, either: Earnings rose in 2024 by 14.2 percent in contrast to the year prior and was 9.5 percent lower than the 2022 total. Residuals were also down in 2024 compared with 2023, declining six percent. Still, an increase over a five-year period offered some space for optimism: The reuse payments were up 19.3 percent compared with 2019. The decline in television residuals was 12.4 percent compared with 2023, while in feature film it was 6.4 percent. The WGA West offered members an early peek at their data on television writer declines in April, when the union revealed that during the 2023-2024 season, writer jobs were down 42 percent. 'Writing careers have always been difficult to access and sustain, but the contraction has made it especially challenging,' the union said in an email. 'We are all subject to the decisions of the companies that control this industry, who have pulled back spending on content based on the demands of Wall Street.' High-tech response vital as terror evolves with drones, apps: Home Secretary Govind Mohan
Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel New Delhi: Union home secretary Govind Mohan on Wednesday outlined five key outcomes of the two-day counterterrorism seminar organised by the National Security Guard (NSG) in the national capital. Citing the recent Pahalgam attack and the retaliatory Operation Sindoor , he emphasised the need to enhance domestic capabilities and global cooperation From drawing lessons from international experiences to discussing evolving threats, response mechanisms and counter strategies, Mohan highlighted the increasing use of social media, drones, and encrypted apps by terrorists and their handlers to evade law stressed the importance of leveraging technology in counterterror operations and conducting tech-enabled counter-IED (improvised explosive device) operations."Terrorism is a global threat-one that endangers not just India but the entire world. It has jeopardised national security across continents and inflicted deep wounds on the fundamental values of humanity. According to the Institute for Economics and Peace's 2024 Report, the number of countries impacted by terrorism has risen from 58 to 66 in 2024. The entire world is grappling with the devastation caused by terrorism," Mohan April 22 this year, 26 Indians lost their lives in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir."Whoever attempts such acts must pay the price. That is precisely why, through Operation Sindoor, we neutralised cross-border terrorism at its source. With precise military strikes on terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, we successfully destroyed key operational bases of terrorist organisations. This stands as a testament to the military skill and professional strength of our armed forces," Mohan at the valedictory session, he added: "Unfortunately, some countries and communities are associating terrorism with their identity or faith-and in doing so, are tarnishing the very idea of humanity. This problem needs to be eradicated from its roots. Whether or not a country is directly impacted by terrorism, it is essential for all nations-including India-to come together on a united platform. We must strengthen global cooperation, share technological solutions, and above all, raise public awareness against this menace."

Florida, dubbed 'Boating Capital of the World' by the FWC, is also the most dangerous
The 2024 Boating Accident Statistical Report shows that Florida, dubbed the 'Boating Capital of the World' by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, is also the most dangerous. With more than a million registered vessels, Florida leads the nation in the number of annual boating fatalities. 'The vast size of Florida's inland, coastal and offshore patrol areas, combined with a significant population of avid and diverse boaters, presents a challenge for the FWC and local and federal maritime enforcement partners,' the FWC said in a news release. Col. Brian Smith, director of the FWC's Division of Law Enforcement, said the 2024 report is a somber fact. 'Our goal is for everyone on the water to return to the dock safely, with great memories and no tragedies,' he said in a news release. "I'm proud of the tireless work our officers and staff do to promote boating safety throughout the year, and we want nothing more than to see these numbers come down in the next report.' The 2024 Report includes the following statistics: 685 reportable boating accidents occurred in Florida — 26 more than in 2023. 81 fatalities were reported — 22 more than the previous year. Collision with a fixed object was the leading accident type, accounting for 31% of incidents. Lack of boater education remains a major concern: 65% of operators involved in fatal accidents had no formal training. The FWC underscored that many of the 2024 fatalities could have been prevented with the use of life jackets. 'Today's modern life jackets are designed to be both effective and comfortable, with lightweight, inflatable options that make wearing them easier than ever,' the release said. The FWC is also encouraging all boaters, regardless of age or experience, to complete a certified boating safety course. In the release, FWC's Lt. Nicholas Korade said life jackets and boater education saves lives. 'We want every boater to understand the responsibility they take on when they go out on the water,' he said. 'A boating safety course is one of the best ways to prepare and protect yourself and others.' The 2024 Boating Accident Statistical Report, compiled by the Boating and Waterways Section of the FWC's Division of Law Enforcement, is compiled from boating accident investigation reports submitted by FWC officers and marine law enforcement partners. The information is then analyzed by FWC's Boating and Waterways before plans to reduce the amount boating accidents, injuries, fatalities and property damage are established. The report includes reported accidents with the following criteria: A person dies or disappears under circumstances suggesting injury or death. A person requires medical treatment beyond basic first aid. Property damage totals $2,000 or more. A vessel is completely lost. According to the FWC, Florida had 1,030,053 registered vessels in 2024, slightly fewer than in 2023. 'But the number of nonregistered, active-use vessels is estimated to be close to 1 million — a figure that continues to grow,' the agency said. 'The resulting congestion on Florida's waterways further underscores the need for education, awareness and responsible boating practices.' The FWC is urging boaters to stay vigilant with the onset of summer.
