Zuckerberg and Chan defend homeschool after Palo Alto zoning probe

Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg attend the 2025 Breakthrough Prize Ceremony at Barker Hangar on April 5, 2025 in Santa Monica. After a city investigation into a home-based school at their Palo Alto compound, the Meta CEO and his wife say their pandemic-era homeschool was legal. Taylor Hill/FilmMagic via Getty Images Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, pediatrician Priscilla Chan, defended their decision Monday to homeschool a small group of children — including their own — inside a residence at their Palo Alto compound, following a New York Times report over the weekend that raised concerns about the legality of the operation. A spokesperson for the couple said in an email to the Chronicle that the homeschooling arrangement began as a pandemic pod during COVID-19 school closures to support childcare and education, and has continued to provide stability for their children. According to the Times, the setup — known as BBS — enrolled approximately 14 children and employed multiple full-time staff members, sparking complaints from neighbors of families dropping off children and 'big vehicles with darkened windows' picking up the children for outings — prompting a city investigation. Advertisement Article continues below this ad Emails obtained by the Times show Palo Alto Planning Director Jonathan Lait concluded the operation violated city zoning laws, which prohibit businesses — including schools — from running in residential areas if employees do not live on-site or if the activity significantly increases traffic. Although state filings listed the site as a private coed day school, the couple's representatives said the designation stems from limitations in the California Department of Education's affidavit system. The same form is used for both traditional private schools and homeschool pods, and contains no field to distinguish between the two. 'Mark, Priscilla and their children have made Palo Alto their home for more than a decade,' the spokesperson said. 'They value being members of the community and have taken a number of steps above and beyond any local requirements to avoid disruption in the neighborhood.' Zuckerberg's team said they were unaware the school was in violation, but they have agreed to relocate the children to a different site. No tuition was charged, and many subjects were taught by parents. City spokesperson Meghan Horrigan-Taylor confirmed the home-based school has since shut down. Laure Andrillon/Special to the Chronicle The revelation comes at a sensitive time for Zuckerberg and Chan. In April, the Primary School — a tuition-free private school serving low-income families in East Palo Alto and backed by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative — announced it would close at the end of the 2025–26 school year. Founded by Chan in 2016, the school aimed to integrate education, health care and family services, and served hundreds of mostly Latino students. While no official reason was given for the closure, the decision followed broader retrenchments from social initiatives linked to Meta and Zuckerberg. The Initiative pledged $50 million over five years to support families during the transition. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. MrBeast, who was recently named the top content creator in the world by Forbes, has reacted to one of the year's most viral stories, the Astronomer Coldplay "kiss-cam scandal." In a post on X, formerly Twitter, MrBeast responded to the company's recent marketing video, which featured Gwyneth Paltrow. Newsweek has reached out to a representative for MrBeast via email for comment. Why It Matters MrBeast's social media post comes after a split-second clip of Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and his colleague Kristin Cabot was shared on social media and promptly broke the internet. The video, first shared by instaagraace on TikTok, has been viewed over 128 million times as of time of writing. Coldplay's lead singer Chris Martin, says: "Either they're having an affair or they're just really shy." The pair were later identified as Byron, CEO of the tech firm Astronomer, and Cabot, the company's head of Human Resources. Both have now resigned. What To Know On July 26, Astronomer shared a light-hearted marketing video which capitalizes on the attention that has been brought to the company since the now infamous Coldplay canoodling. The video features Paltrow, Martin's Oscar-winning ex-wife, as a "very temporary spokesperson." MrBeast, real name Jimmy Donaldson, responded to this on X. In a post that has been viewed over 230,000 times, he wrote, "Can I be CEO." Astronomer's board of directors have announced that they will start a formal search for their new chief executive. Company co-founder Pete DeJoy has taken over as interim CEO. He said on Monday that Astronomer has faced an "unusual and surreal" amount of attention in recent days. Astronomer is a New York-based company that helps companies develop, grow, and analyze products using artificial intelligence. MrBeast, whose YouTube channel boasts over 416 million subscribers, is the owner of multiple companies, including Feastables and MrBeast Burger. He has previously shared posts on social media expressing interest in buying the social media platform X from Elon Musk. In June, as part of their list of Top Content Creators, Forbes reported that MrBeast had earnings of $85 million. Back in 2022, Forbes reported the 27-year-old could become the world's "first YouTuber billionaire," reporting at the time that he had a net worth of $500 million. What People Are Saying An Astronomer spokesperson previously told Newsweek in a statement: "Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met." What's Next The search for Astronomer's new CEO is ongoing.

PETA Calls Out MrBeast Over 100 Men vs a Gorilla Post

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Animal charity People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has called out YouTube content creator MrBeast, real name Jimmy Donaldson, on social media after he weighed in on the viral 100 Men vs. a gorilla debate. Newsweek reached out to Donaldson via email and to PETA via an online contact form for comment outside of regular working hours. Why It Matters Over the weekend, a viral debate emerged on social media: could 100 men beat a gorilla in a hypothetical fight? The discourse has swept the internet following a post from social media user DreamChasnMike in which they wrote: "i think 100 n***** could beat 1 gorilla everybody just gotta be dedicated to the s***." The post has so far been viewed 273 million times on X, formerly Twitter, and now Donaldson has weighed in. ODD ANDERSEN/AFP via Getty Images What To Know Donaldson has cemented his position as the world's most popular YouTube content creator, with more than 388 million subscribers on the platform. Since launching his career online, he has built up a reputation for content involving big-budget, elaborate stunts and charitable acts, including giving away cash, houses and cars. "Need to test this," he wrote on X to his 32.5 million followers. The post was accompanied by a photo of him, a gorilla and a group of men and came with the text overlay, "100 Men vs a Gorilla." The post has been viewed 26 million times as of reporting. Need 100 men to test this, any volunteers? — MrBeast (@MrBeast) April 28, 2025 While many people who saw the post thought it was funny, PETA was not impressed. Responding to Donaldson, it wrote, "try 100 reasons to leave animals out of your content..." Animal rights groups have often raised concerns about the treatment of animals in online content. Between July 2020 and August 2021, the Social Media Animal Cruelty Coalition (SMACC) documented over 5,000 links to videos which contained cruelty to animals on platforms including YouTube, Facebook and TikTok. These videos had amassed over 5.3 billion views and showed multiple kinds of mistreatment of animals, according to a 2021 SMACC report. What People Are Saying Jimmy Donaldson, aka MrBeast, in a post on X: "Need 100 men to test this, any volunteers?" Animal charity PETA responded on X: "100 men vs. a gorilla? Maybe try 100 reasons to leave animals out of your content instead..." Gregg Tully, the executive director of the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance, was quoted in SMACC's 2021 report about animal cruelty online: "Online animal cruelty shows humanity at its worst, normalizes a view that wild animals can be pets, and enables the illegal trade in many species, including Africa's endangered apes and monkeys." What's Next Due to numerous international laws, it is highly unlikely the 100 men vs. a gorilla debate will translate into any real-life content.
