What are cooling jackets and how do they work?
Manchester United are using cooling jackets in a bid to help their players deal with the heat during their Premier League Super Series campaign in the United jackets have been around in various forms as early as the 1950s and 60s, first used by the military and have since been used in a range of sports including Formula 1, cycling, tennis and are designed to reduce an athlete's core and skin temperature, with studies showing it can lead to an improvement in endurance, performance and limit the risks of heat stroke and heat type currently used by United are from a range by kit manufacturers Adidas that were launched earlier this cooling jackets are being worn by players following warm-ups and at half-time of their three matches in the United at the 2025 Club World Cup this summer experienced extreme heat in a number of matches. Multiple cooling breaks were taken, as well as some stadiums installing large mist fans on the sidelines. Borussia Dortmund's substitutes also spent the first half of their group stage match against Mamelodi Sundowns sat in the changing room to avoid the heat. How are cooling jackets used and do they actually work? The earliest models of cooling jackets used by the army required a power supply to circulate cold water around the body, but technological advancements since then mean this is no longer the Adidas released their Climacool System technology earlier this year, it consisted of an insulated jacket that goes over the top of a cooling vest."For the same exercise intensity in a hot compared to a cooler condition, the heart rate's higher, the body temperature's higher. That can lead to things like heat stroke, or even maybe even worse, heat exhaustion," said Dr Chris Tyler, a reader in environmental physiology from the University of Roehampton."What the vest will claim to do is reduce all of that. So they will lower the body temperature, lower the heart rate and lower the strain."The use of the vest is key into its effectiveness. There is a major difference between how someone's body feels to them and their actual body need to be worn for a sustained period and cover as much of the body as possible. This allows more time for the body to effectively cool down quicker, reducing the risks attached to being too hot and also helping athletes to run quicker and for longer with less strain. A difference maker for the 2026 World Cup? Given the conditions during the Club World Cup in what was unofficially a warm-up for the 2026 men's World Cup, it gives a good indication of what can be expected during next summer's tournament across the United States, Canada and to the 32-team Club World Cup, there will be 48 nations at the World Cup. This will mean more daytime matches and additional challenges to players when it comes to dealing with the weather."Certainly some sort of proactive cooling intervention," Dr Tyler replied when asked if cooling vests will be a necessity at the Club World Cup."The best way to avoid it is to not play in those conditions, but we know that's not going to happen for lots of reasons."There could be some proactive scheduling. I've seen people talk about very early kick-offs or very late kick-offs, and they do that in La Liga - that tends to kick off very late, for example."We saw players struggling this summer, there's no reason to think we won't see them struggling next summer as the teams will be more likely to be adopting cooling strategies to try and combat that."Dr Tyler added that he expects cooling jackets, or at least some form of cooling equipment will be used widespread across the World Cup."Definitely. All the teams that can, will. Those teams that have huge support behind them certainly will and teams are already preparing for next year's World Cup with an eye on the heat," he explained."Some of those might be off the shelf measures, some of them might be bespoke measures."The better teams generally are impacted less by the heat because they can control the tempo, they can make the opponent run, those sorts of things."I think every national teams should be able to have the resources to have something and not to sort of be overlooked." Cooling jackets in Formula One In March, Adidas released their Climacool System, consisting of an insulated jacket and a specially created cooling vest.F1 team Mercedes used the jackets for any races in which hot weather would affect the performance of their manufacturer say that in hot conditions, drivers can experience temperatures between 55C and 60C which leads to a weight loss of 4.2kg (9.3 pounds) just in sweat during a single race.F1 drivers tend to immerse themselves in water ahead of a race to cool their whole body down in advance to their race preparations."Typically, [F1 drivers] will do that an hour before the race," Dr Tyler said."What they're doing is when they put the vests on that's largely perceptual. What they're trying to do is as much as possible is feel cooler for as long as possible which is what those vests are doing."Next year, the FIA are going to really introduce various in-car cooling suits when the races are hot enough. Now that's going to be very similar to [what] the military used to use. "The drivers will be sitting, so they won't be doing as much activity as if say you were running, but they're going to sitting on an engine, they're going to be sitting on a hot track."I have my doubts that they're going to be able to extract enough heat to actually lower the strain of the drivers, but they're certainly going to make the drivers feel a bit cooler."It also provides a nice platform for all of their companies and sponsors to have another place to have their badge which is something that the Formula One teams have suddenly cottoned onto."This article is the latest from BBC Sport's Ask Me Anything team. Saudi's Al Hilal become dual champions
Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro (R) scores the goal voted the best at the 2025 Club World Cup in the United States. Photo: AFP Al Hilal became champions in two countries when they thumped Al Merrikh 4-0 on Tuesday to win the Elite League in Sudan, where a civil war has been raging since 2023. To escape a war that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions, according to the United Nations, Hilal and Merrikh competed in the Mauritanian championship, finishing first and sixth. However, Confederation of African Football rules state that only national champions can enter the CAF Champions League, forcing the two clubs to return home and play in army-controlled northeast venues. The national army have recaptured the capital, Khartoum, after two years of occupation by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, but fighting rages in other parts of the east African nation. Here, AFP Sport brings news from around the continent, including a personal triumph for Brazilian forward Lucas Ribeiro from South African club Mamelodi Sundowns. Sudan Hilal hammered greatest domestic rivals Merrikh after building a three-goal lead by half-time to be crowned Sudanese champions a record-extending 31st time. Hilal (plus 11) won the title on goal difference from Al Ahly Madani (plus 6) after both sides secured 14 points in the eight-club mini-league. Snatching the title means Hilal will extend a remarkable record of competing in the Champions League every season since 2004 while Madani will represent Sudan in the competition for the first time. South Africa The goal Ribeiro scored for South African champions Sundowns against Borussia Dortmund has been voted the best of the 2025 Club World Cup in a FIFA online poll. Securing possession in midfield, the 26-year-old used pace and footwork to burst through the defence before calmly shooting past goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Unfortunately for Sundowns, the first goal of the group match in the 11th minute triggered an immediate response from the German outfit, who scored four times before finishing 4-3 winners. Tanzania Simba captain Mohammed Husseini will not have his contract renewed by Simba after 12 years at a club who have dominated Tanzanian football for decades with Dar es Salaam neighbours Young Africans. The 28-year-old left-back joined Simba from Kagera Sugar in 2014 and has been a first choice since under various coaches, including current incumbent, South African Fadlu Davids. Simba were runners-up in the CAF Confederation Cup and Tanzanian Premier League last season and suffered a surprise semi-finals loss to Singida Black Stars in the Tanzanian FA Cup. Ghana Abdul-Karim Zito has been elevated from caretaker to head coach of Asante Kotoko, a Ghanaian club seeking to become giants again in the west African nation. The two-time African champions came third in the league last season behind first-time title-holders Bibiani Gold Stars, then beat Golden Kick with an added-time goal to win the Ghana FA Cup. Lifting the cup qualified Kotoko for the CAF Confederation Cup, the second-tier African competition where Zito exceeded expectations in 2024 by taking another Ghanaian club, Dreams, to the semi-finals. Uganda Widely travelled Belgian coach Ivan Minnaert has swapped one domestic champion club for another by moving from Fassell of Liberia to Vipers of Uganda. Monrovia-based Fassell finished 11 points ahead of Heaven Eleven in the Liberian title race to be crowned national champions for the first time. Vipers, whose home ground lies 25 kilometres (16 miles) from the capital Kampala, won a much tighter Ugandan league chase, securing just two points more than runners-up NEC.

Deeney rates Chelsea's Premier League title chances after Club World Cup triumph
Chelsea should be competing for the Premier League title next season and are only 'two or three signings' away from winning it. That is the opinion of former striker Troy Deeney after Chelsea thumped PSG 3-0 on Sunday to win the 2025 Club World Cup. In the final in New Jersey, the Blues put in perhaps their best performance under Enzo Maresca, with Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Robert Sanchez the standouts. Their triumph has raised expectations that the west London club could end their long wait for a Premier League title next season, having last lifted the trophy back in 2017 when Antonio Conte was in the dugout. Initially, Chelsea kept pace with Liverpool and Arsenal last season, though Maresca repeatedly insisted that they were not in the title race, with his side going on to suffer a big drop in form after Christmas and finishing fourth. Deeney believes the Blues need to be confident going into the 2025/26 campaign, telling talkSPORT: 'My only frustration with Enzo Maresca is he keeps downplaying it. This is an exceptional team, you look at the talent they've got on the bench, this is a team that can really compete. 'They're probably two or three pieces away. I'd go for a goalkeeper, an experienced centre-half and a full-back. That for me is a perfect team. 'But when you start talking about, 'we're away from getting in the Champions League, that's a milestone', I don't buy it. I think they have to be competing. 'I've got to give them a little bit of grace at the start of the season because we're three weeks away from the start of the Premier League season. They've just finished their last season when Liverpool have just played their first pre-season game. 'They're going to have to rest and recover. I think later on in the season this may take a toll but I expect them now to be looking at going deep into the Champions League, can they win the FA Cup and absolutely can they be up there with Arsenal trying to push on with Liverpool.' Chelsea begin the 2025/26 season at Stamford Bridge with a London derby against Crystal Palace on August 17. Liverpool – 15/8 Arsenal – 9/4 Man City – 11/4 Chelsea – 8/1 Newcastle – 22/1 Man United – 28/1 Tottenham – 50/1 Odds courtesy of Betfair After watching the Club World Cup final, Real Madrid and Tottenham legend Gareth Bale agreed with Deeney's prediction. More Trending 'I don't think they are far away at all [from challenging for the Premier League],' Bale told DAZN. 'Last season they got to around Christmas and everyone was talking about them being contenders. Obviously they are a young team and they kind of fell off but I think they will learn a lot from that. 'They have shown character as a team to come back and win the Conference League and now win this. I think confidence will be booming and they will have that self belief now.' PSG manager Luis Enrique and Chelsea forward João Pedro clashed after the FIFA Club World Cup final. The side led by Enzo Maresca comprehensively beat opponents Paris Saint-Germain in the final, 3-0, thanks to a sensational first 45 minutes. While Chelsea held on to their lead and even managed to keep a clean sheet, tensions boiled over at the end. A red card for PSG star João Neves and several yellow cards handed out in the final moments ultimately culminated in an intense brawl on the pitch at full-time. "My clear intention was to separate the players so the situation wouldn't escalate," said the Spaniard in a post-match press conference. PSG were on a sensational run of games—winning the UEFA Champions League 5-0 over Inter, beating the likes of Inter Miami and Real Madrid 4-0 at the Club World Cup, and defeating Bayern Munich 2-0 en route to the final on Sunday. However, it was Maresca and Chelsea who prevailed at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. With the win, Chelsea have pocketed a total close to $129.5 million as prize money. Fluminense 0-2 Chelsea: Joao Pedro eliminates boyhood club with two goals in first start
Joao Pedro's first start for Chelsea was a memorable one, as the newly signed $75-million striker scored both goals and the Blues beat Fluminense, Pedro's boyhood club, 2-0 in the semifinals of the 2025 Club World Cup on Tuesday. MORE — Prize money list for Club World Cup Pedro was perhaps only in the starting lineup because Liam Delap, who also joined Chelsea this summer, was suspended after picking up his second yellow card of the tournament against Palmeiras in the quarterfinals. The 23-year-old Brazilian international moved to Rio de Janeiro to join the Fluminense youth academy at the age of 10, before moving to England (Watford, Brighton and now Chelsea) shortly after his 18th birthday in 2019. Enzo Maresca's side has now conceded just two goals in four games after they were beaten 3-1 by Flamengo in their second game of the group stage, beating ES Tunis, Benfica, Palmeiras and Fluminense to reach Sunday's final. The only concern is that midfielder Moises Caicedo limped off in the 93rd minute after his ankle twisted awkwardly while challenging for the ball. Maresca had already made all five subs, therefore Chelsea finished the game with just 10 men. Chelsea will face either PSG or Real Madrid in the final back at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey — also the site of both semifinals. Fluminense will be the underdogs against Chelsea but they were very impressive against Inter Milan in the last 16 and got the job done against Al Hilal in the quarters. They've kept three shutouts in their five games so far at the Club World Cup and have looked particularly dangerous on the counter. MORE — Club World Cup schedule, bracket Chelsea are used to facing Brazilian opponents by this point, as they lost to Flamengo in the group stage and beat Palmeiras in the quarterfinals. Enzo Maresca's young side are looking really good in attack and after adding Joao Pedro they are even more stacked. There are so many options for Maresca to choose from, especially going forward, but he's got the balance right in the knockout rounds so far and better finishing would have made life a lot more comfortable for themselves. Fluminense team news, focus Thiago Silva anchors the defense and keeps everything ticking over for his boyhood club Fluminense. It will be a special day for Silva, who played a key role in Chelsea's Champions League win which qualified them for this Club World Cup. Fluminense play a 3-5-2 system and look to get the ball wide, whip in crosses and are very good on the break. Chelsea team news, focus Moises Caicedo is back available after suspension which is a massive boost given his form and importance in the holding midfield role. Andrey Santos came in and did really well in midfield in the last game, but Caicedo will start. But in defense Levi Colwill is suspended at center back which is a blow. In attack Joao Pedro had a big impact after coming off the bench and he may start due to Liam Delap being out with a one game suspension. Cole Palmer and Pedro Neto will start and Nkunku and Madueke will scrap it out for the other attacking midfield spot. Fluminense vs Chelsea prediction This is going to be a fascinating tactical battle. Chelsea will have plenty of the ball, as they usually do, and Fluminense will be fine with that as they look to pick them off on the break. This has the feeling of an extra time game. Fluminense 1-2 Chelsea.
