OSAKA - The number of visitors to the World Exposition in Osaka has topped 10 million, reaching the milestone at the halfway point of the six-month event, the Japanese expo association said on July 13. The expo had welcomed 10.08 million visitors as of July 12, three months since its April 13 opening, the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition said. The number of daily visitors started picking up four weeks after the opening, which was marred by news of unfinished pavilions, with a record 184,990 entering the venue on June 28. However, ticket sales slowed from late June as the rainy season drew to a close in the region and intense heat arrived, causing concerns for organisers who need 22 million visitors to reach the event's break-even point. Bacteria halts World Expo water shows

Spectacular sight: Visitors watching a water and light display during a media preview day for the 2025 Osaka Expo in Osaka, four days before the event opened to the public, in this file photo. — AFP The discovery of high levels of bacteria has led the World Expo in Osaka to suspend daily water shows and use of a shallow play pool, organisers said. It comes after visitors also complained that swarms of tiny flying insects had invaded the vast waterfront site where Expo 2025 runs until mid-October. Nearly six million people have visited exhibits from more than 160 countries, regions and organisations since it opened in April. Although polls showed that public enthusiasm for the Expo was lukewarm before its opening, organisers say crowds have been growing, especially in recent weeks. But concerns were raised over environmental conditions at the reclaimed island site in Osaka Bay, which was once a landfill. Organisers said on Thursday that high levels of legionella bacteria had forced them to close an area with shallow water where visitors, including children, could cool off. That followed a statement on Wednesday saying daily fountain shows with music and lights at an artificial pond had been suspended for the same reason. They said they were cleaning the affected areas, adding that a decision was due yesterday on whether the shows could resume. Days before the Expo opened, a level of methane gas high enough to potentially ignite a fire was detected at the site. More recently, organisers sprayed insecticide to deter swarms of non-biting midges bothering guests. Also known as a World's Fair, the Expo phenomenon, which brought the Eiffel Tower to Paris, began with London's 1851 Crystal Palace exhibition. It is now held every five years in different global locations. — AFP

Kyoto's first night market to debut this month with food, shopping and ninja shows

Kyoto is one of Japan's most visited cities, and that popularity has increasingly led to overcrowding. In response, city officials have been exploring various solutions, including the recent introduction of dedicated sightseeing buses for tourists. This month, a new initiative aims to increase Kyoto's nighttime attractions and, in turn, help redistribute tourist activity beyond the usual hotspots and daytime rush. The inaugural Kyoto Night Market is set to take place on Sunday June 8 at the Ohigashi-san Plaza in front of Higashi Honganji. This stately Buddhist temple is one of Kyoto's most easily accessible heritage sites, as it's located in the city centre, less than 10 minutes' walk from Kyoto Station. From 3pm to 10pm, the square will be decorated with lanterns and host around 70 booths offering traditional Japanese arts and crafts, local produce, street food and craft beer. But there's more to this event than just eating and shopping – you can easily make a night of it. Modern-day ninjas from Shiga prefecture's Koka Ninja Village theme park will be putting on performances, while students from Kyoto's Doshisha University will be offering rickshaw rides. The night market will also feature classic festival booths with retro games such as goldfish scooping and yo-yo fishing, all run by elementary school kids. This effort aims to instil entrepreneurial spirit in local children through play and at the same time help develop their social skills. Kyoto Night Market is set to become a regular monthly event, with upcoming dates on July 17 (to coincide with the Gion Festival parade), August 11 and September 12. Japan Expo 2025 draws five million visitors in first six weeks

Crowds queuing up for events at various pavilions during the 2025 Osaka Expo in the city of Osaka on May 21, 2025. - AFP TOKYO: The World Expo in Japan's Osaka has welcomed five million visitors in its first six weeks, organisers say, despite lukewarm enthusiasm for the event ahead of its opening. A Mars meteorite and a beating artificial heart grown from stem cells are among the displays at Expo 2025, where more than 160 countries, regions and organisations are taking part. The event opened on April 13 and runs until mid-October, with most of the pavilions encircled by the world's largest wooden architectural structure, a latticed "Grand Ring". On Monday (May 26), the five millionth visitor entered the vast waterfront site, organisers said in a statement. "The number of visitors to the Expo... increased from four million to five million in seven days," they said, adding that more visitors were coming "with each passing day". So far 12.4 million tickets have been sold to the event. Organisers have set a total target of 23 million. Also known as a World's Fair, the Expo phenomenon, which brought the Eiffel Tower to Paris, began with London's 1851 Crystal Palace exhibition. It is now held every five years in different locations around the globe. Osaka last hosted the Expo in 1970 when Japan was booming and its technology the envy of the world. It attracted 64 million people, a record until Shanghai in 2010. Opinion polls before Expo 2025 opened showed low levels of public enthusiasm, with analysts saying inflation and high accommodation costs due to a record influx of foreign tourists to Japan could put people off buying tickets. - AFP
