New Zealand edge Junior Boks in thrilling U20 Rugby Championship game
Defence went out the window as both teams focused on playing the most attacking rugby they could. South Africa and New Zealand's U20 teams put on a show of attacking rugby in their match in Gqeberha on Sunday. Picture: Richard Huggard/Gallo Images The Junior All Blacks beat the young Springboks 48-45 in a thrilling final match of the 2025 Rugby Championship in Gqeberha on Sunday to retain the title they won in the inaugural competition last year. In total, 15 tries were scored in a match that will live long in the memory of those who witnessed it. New Zealand went unbeaten in the competition. They drew with Australia and also beat Argentina, while South Africa opened with a win against Argentina, but then lost to Australia and New Zealand. Riley Norton's Junior Boks raced into an almost unbelievable 19-0 lead after just 13 minutes thanks to tries by centre Albie Bester, prop Simphiwe Ngobese and hooker Siphosethu Mnebelele. The Boks were well on top and in charge, but the 'Baby All Blacks' showed tremendous composure to fight back in style with two tries of their own in the space of eight minutes midway through the half. Both were scored by Harlyn Saunoa. But the ding-dong battle was just getting going. South Africa's left wing Gino Cupido crossed for his team's fourth try in the 28th minute before the men from New Zealand again scored two tries in quick succession, through captain and hooker Manumaua Letiu and Saunoa, his third in the first half. After a thrilling first half, just two points separated the teams at the break. More second half thrills And the action continued unabated after the resumption, with the Junior All Blacks scoring a further two tries to rock the hosts. Wandile Mlaba, the Junior Boks' No 8, though pulled one back for the South Africans, but before the home team could do any celebrating, the New Zealanders scored again, their seventh try, to go 43-31 up. Mlaba was at it again though a few minutes later, getting his second and his team's sixth try of the game in the 57th minute. Just five points separated the teams going into the final quarter. Right wing Maloni Kunawave then scored his second try of the game, diving in spectacularly in the corner; the Junior All Blacks going 48-38 up. But with five minutes to go, the Junior Boks were awarded a penalty try for New Zealand collapsing a driving maul, with a player also sent to the sin-bin. Just a few minutes earlier the Junior All Blacks had also lost a man to a red card for a dangerous tackle, so they were down to 13 for the final few minutes. Earlier Sunday, Australia beat Argentina 40-36.

Feb 11 (Reuters) - Argentina will play their 2025 Rugby Championship home game against South Africa in England at Twickenham, governing body SANZAAR said on Tuesday. "It's always exciting to play at Allianz Stadium and we look forward to facing Argentina for the first time in the UK," South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus said. "We've played two neutral-venue test matches at the iconic stadium since 2023 against New Zealand and Wales, and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience, especially with the passionate crowd filling the stadium and the large contingent of Springbok supporters based in the UK." Argentina will have their work cut out against defending champions South Africa, who have also won the last two Rugby World Cups. "It is an honour that Los Pumas have the opportunity to face the Springboks, the current World Champions, at the legendary Allianz Stadium known as the 'Home of Rugby'...," Argentine Rugby Union president Gabriel Travaglini said in a statement. "Undoubtedly, it will be an unforgettable experience for our players and a great opportunity to show our rugby to all the fans around the world." The Rugby Championship kicks off on August 16 when South Africa host Australia.

Joe Schmidt to stand down as Wallabies coach after the 2025 Rugby Championship
SYDNEY (AP) — Joe Schmidt has agreed to continue as head coach of the Wallabies until after the 2025 Rugby Championship to allow Rugby Australia time to recruit a replacement. Schmidt replaced Eddie Jones as head coach after Australia's dismal performance at the 2023 Rugby World Cup. He was contracted until the end of the three-test series against the British and Irish Lions in July and August with potential to extend the role through the 2027 Rugby World Cup, which Australia is hosting. But Rugby Australia issued a statement Thursday saying Schmidt would coach the Wallabies in the annual series against World Cup champion South Africa, New Zealand and Argentina before standing down in early October. 'After noting the positive impact Joe has made with the Wallabies playing and coaching staff, we were keen that he stay on after the Lions series,' Peter Horne, Australia's director of high performance, said in a statement. 'Joe expressed to us that he was enjoying his work with the Wallabies while also making clear his need to spend more time at home with his family.' The new head coach will be in place for the Wallabies' test match in Japan on Oct. 25 ahead of their European tour to round out 2025. The Wallabies kick off their international season against Fiji on July 6 before taking on the British and Irish Lions on consecutive weekends in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney starting July 19. That will be followed by Rugby Championship tests between Aug. 16 and Oct. 4. Schmidt started his Wallabies tenure with three consecutive wins and continued to bring new players into the national squad as he tested combinations and depth of talent. The performances and confidence generally improved and a 2024 season that included a win over England at Twickenham ended with a narrow 22-19 loss to Ireland in Dublin and a 6-7 win-loss record. ___ AP rugby:
