Marc-Andre Barriault admits he wasn't initially thrilled UFC offered Shara Magomedov
ABU DHABI – Marc-Andre Barriault was offered Shara Magomedov just days after potentially saving his UFC job. Barriault (17-9 MMA, 6-8 UFC) takes on rising middleweight contender Shara Magomedov (15-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) on Saturday's UFC on ABC 9 main card at Etihad Arena on Yas Island (ABC, ESPN, ESPN+). Barriault snapped a three-fight losing skid with a brutal knockout of Bruno Silva at UFC 315 in May, which led to a Performance of the Night bonus and a new contract. "The fight in Montreal was one of the best highlights of my career for sure," Barriault told MMA Junkie during Wednesday's UFC on ABC 9 media day. "As soon as I got back home, less than 48 hours I was on the phone with my manager. All good news for sure, but I was kind of like, 'OK, I need to jump back right away,' but it's OK. "At this point in my career, I just want to make the most of it. I've been here for six years now so, I feel like I'm at my peak right now, and I'm super happy that the UFC gave me this opportunity to come and fight this guy for sure." However, drawing the dangerous Magomedov less than a week after his career-highlight win left the Canadian a little confused. "I'm not gonna lie, at first, I was like, 'OK, why they offer me this guy?,'" Barriault said. "Stylistically, I was not super excited at first, but the more I was thinking about the matchup, the fight and also all the confidence I gained after my last fight, I was like, 'OK Marc, you belong here, you can fight with anybody in this division.' I have what it takes to be here." Magomedov is coming off his first-career loss to Michael Page in February, but Barriault won't put too much stock into that. He plans on bringing the fight to him. "People try to do the mirror effect with him," Barriault said. "He tries to draw you into his style, into his game. To play the range, the distance game, the bouncing. I'm a striker, but we are both different strikers. Me, I like to close the range, fight in the inside, dirty boxing, but I have a couple of good weapons also in my sleeve to play. But, I just want to be smart, do my thing, and I think everything is going to be fine."

Shara Magomedov says Marc-Andre Barriault's pressure will give him a 'predatory feeling'
ABU DHABI – Shara Magomedov thinks Marc-Andre Barriault's forward-pressure is tailor made for his style. Magomedov (15-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) takes on Barriault (17-9 MMA, 6-8 UFC) in a middleweight bout on Saturday's UFC on ABC 9 (ABC, ESPN, ESPN+) main card at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Magomedov will look to rebound from his first-career loss to Michael Page at UFC Fight Night 250 in February. "I never really was worried about that zero as possibly my fans were worried about that zero and the fact that I was undefeated," Magomedov told reporters including MMA Junkie in Wednesday's media day. "It just happened that I lost, but we understand what happened, we kind of draw our own results from that, we learn from that and keep moving forward." Barriault has shown to be a kill or be killed type of fighter, with his past nine fights ending by stoppage. He was able to snap a three-fight losing skid with a brutal knockout of Bruno Silva just two months ago at UFC 315. "Bullet" thinks Barriault's style caters to his. "I like when I get pressured in that way because once I see that danger, once I see him coming towards me, I get some sort of predatory feeling," Magomedov said. "Like a feeling of trying to liquidate this pressure, this danger that's coming towards me so, this way it pressures me to show all my aspects that I have to dismantle this threat that's coming towards me." Magomedov will look to pick up right where he left off prior to losing to Page. "I'm pretty sure with this victory and maybe two, three more fights that I'm going to be right there, right back at the top of the division," Magomedov said. "Potentially I'll be breathing already in the back of the top five if I show one, two good finishes, and I'll be right there. I'll be in the talks to potentially get the rematch."

Ohtani's big homer and Smith's 2 blasts help Dodgers end home woes with 5-2 win over Twins
LOS ANGELES -- LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the first after giving up a leadoff homer to fellow All-Star Byron Buxton, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Minnesota Twins 5-2 on Monday night. The NL West leaders snapped a six-game skid at home, their longest such streak at Dodger Stadium since September 2017. They were swept in three games by the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend. Buxton sent Ohtani's second pitch of the game halfway up the left field pavilion. After Mookie Betts walked, Ohtani answered with a 441-foot blast to center that put the Dodgers in front, 2-1. The two-way Japanese superstar has homered in three straight games. Smith went deep twice off David Festa (3-4). Smith led off the fourth with a two-strike homer to center and followed with a 435-foot shot to left that made it 4-1. Andy Pages added a solo shot off reliever Cole Sands. Dustin May (6-6) took over from Ohtani, who allowed one run, four hits and struck out three in three innings. May gave up five hits in 4 2/3 innings, struck out four and walked three. Kirby Yates earned his third save. Freddie Freeman was in the lineup a day after being hit by a pitch on his left wrist in Sunday's 6-5 loss to Milwaukee. He was 1 for 4 with a strikeout. Minnesota shortstop Carlos Correa went 0 for 5, getting booed heavily in every at-bat by Dodgers fans still angry about the 2017 World Series, when Correa played for Houston. He was robbed of a potential game-tying homer by James Outman at the center field wall in the ninth. Ohtani is the first pitcher to give up a homer and hit a homer in the first inning of the same game since Philadelphia's Randy Lerch in a 23-22 win over the Chicago Cubs on May 17, 1979. Twins RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (5-4, 3.95 ERA) starts Tuesday against Dodgers RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (8-7, 2.59). ___
