Manly's message to fans as DCE braces for mixed reception in final home games

Manly officials hope love – not hate – will be in the air as angry fans threaten to disrupt two major Daly Cherry-Evans events over the closing weeks of the NRL season. The club's most-capped player will celebrate his 350th game in the NRL when he runs out against the Dolphins at 4 Pines Park on Saturday afternoon. Thirteen days later against the Warriors, Cherry-Evans will make his final appearance in maroon and white before either departing for the Roosters or retiring from the competition. Both home games will be played against a backdrop of drama and acrimony. Cherry-Evans' decision to quit the Sea Eagles – announced on Channel Nine just three weeks into the season - has not gone down well with many Manly fans. While they initially backed their captain, that support has dwindled in recent months as the Sea Eagles' season headed south. RELATED: Legend's message to Jake Trbojevic amid worrying fallout at Manly Family first as Cameron Smith makes major career decision Fans' telling response after Channel 9's divisive post-game move They have won just seven games since his shock announcement and are currently on a four-game losing streak that has all but ended their top eight hopes. Manly fans are at war with each other, with half calling for the captain's axing and the other half arguing he should be given a send-off commensurate with his service to the club over 15 years. There are fears the anti-Cherry-Evans brigade will make their feelings known loudest during his final two home games – or boycott the matches in protest. But Sea Eagles CEO Tony Mestrov is confident supporters will give their captain the farewell he deserves. He told Yahoo Sport Australia: "Daly is our most-capped player and a premiership winner and I'm sure fans will want to show their appreciation for his contribution over many years. To play 350 games is a remarkable achievement and is to be applauded. The crowds at 4 Pines have been great all year and we'd love to see big numbers attend our final two home games." Superfan Stephen Lucas, whose 'Guess what? Manly hates you too' banner is well known to league supporters, is also calling for unity. "If some so-called fans boycott those games, it just means there will be more room for the real fans and less d***heads at the games," he said. "It will be sad saying goodbye to DCE. I wish he wasn't going but in saying that he has his reasons and I wish him the best whatever he chooses to do. I am glad I got to see him play so many games for Manly and hope he goes out on a high note."

Manly fan favourite issues Roosters warning to teammates amid huge hint about future

Manly forward Jake Trbojevic has warned his teammates that they 'have to win' against the Roosters on Saturday night to keep their NRL finals hopes alive. And the Sea Eagles fan favourite dropped a major hint that he could look to finish his career in England after admitting a move abroad is something he's tempted by. Trbojevic's Sea Eagles take on the Roosters at their 4 Pines Park home ground on Saturday night, aiming to bounce back from last week's thumping by the Bulldogs. The loss saw Manly drop out of the top-eight and with only six games of the regular season remaining, victory over the Roosters will be crucial to the Sea Eagles' hopes of playing finals footy this year. Saturday night's showdown sees Manly skipper Daly Cherry-Evans come up against the side most expect he'll be playing for next season, despite Trbojevic admitting on Wednesday that Manly's players have still not been informed about the skipper's decision. While the DCE saga offers an interesting sub-plot to the round 22 clash, Trbojevic insists his side's sole focus will be on getting an all-important two competition points. Manly face a daunting trip to Canberra next week to face the ladder-leading Raiders, making a win against the Roosters even more vital. The Chooks are two points behind the ninth-placed Sea Eagles on the ladder and Trbojevic says it's a game they simply cannot afford to lose if they hope to keep touch with the top-eight and keep their playoff aspirations alive. "They're a good side and they're right around us on the table... so we have to win," he told SEN radio on Thursday. "We're sort of in a position where we've gone nine wins, nine losses so we haven't quite nailed it. And they're important these wins, we've got two hard games the next two weeks. "So it would be really nice to go out and perform well and turn around (what happened) last week because it was a pretty tough performance. But we've had some good form the last few weeks so we take a bit of confidence from that and hopefully we can do a job." It's understood the brothers have already commenced discussions with the club about signing contract extensions, but both will almost certainly have to accept pay cuts if they want to stay at the club. Jake, 31, revealed he's probably only looking at a one-year extension, while Manly are hopeful of re-signing Tom to a longer deal - albeit on significantly less than his current $1.1 million per season deal. Jake has made it clear that he doesn't want to play for a rival NRL club and would ideally like to finish his career as a one-club player for the Sea Eagles, but admitted that playing in England is definitely something he would consider. "I haven't thought of it too much (but) obviously I'd never play against Manly," the oldest Trbojevic brother said. "But I guess I went to the World Cup (in England) in 2022 and it was such a good experience that actually opened my eyes to that (playing abroad). "That actually would be something that would be really cool to finish off the career but I honestly haven't thought that much about it... I'm just happy with how things are going at the moment and hopefully finish at Manly and see how we go."

‘Splat!': Tom Trbojevic cops a huge Wests Tigers hit in brutal act

Prior to Friday night's 18-point win over the Wests Tigers, Manly superstar Tom Trbojevic said he was 'excited' at the prospect of playing in the centres for just the second time since 2017. One of the great fullbacks in the modern game, 'Turbo' was shifted to right centre by Sea Eagles coach Anthony Seibold to allow Lehi Hopoate to move into the No. 1 jumper. While the home side got the job done 28-10 at 4 Pines Park, just 11 minutes in the 28-year-old Trbojevic may have been regretting the decision to be so accommodating. With Manly attacking the Tigers' line, Daly Cherry-Evans found Hopoate, who moved the ball to Trbojevic as the home team chased the game's first points. But Tigers winger Jeral Skelton had other ideas, lining Trbojevic up and landing a crunching tackle that brought everyone watching out of their seats. Watch the big hit in the video player above 'Oh Tom! Tom has caught a beauty there,' Andrew Voss screamed on Fox League. 'Jeral Skelton, he's knocked himself about but he's taken out the main man. Call him the sniper.' Cooper Cronk added: 'Skelton has launched himself into Tom Trbojevic, rattles the cage of the Manly centre. 'I think he's also rattled himself because he's come up ginger. That was a big shot.' Voss then followed up: 'It was Kamikaze-like. I don't know if I've seen Tom get hit like that in his career. 'Welcome to the centres Tom.' While a sore Trbojevic was able to battle on, Skelton did indeed come off second best, with the independent doctor calling for a category 2 Head Injury Assessment test. But plenty of footy fans took to social media to comment on the brutal hit. The NRL News account on X wrote: 'Jeral Skelton puts a bellringer on Tommy Turbo but he's the one that has to come off for a HIA.' Sports journalist Lachlan Jeffery tweeted: 'That was a Kamikaze tackle by Jeral Skelton.' Señor Mick offered simply: 'SPLAT!!!!' Others were left questioning the decision to shift the injury-prone Trbojevic from his favoured position. Racing reporter Neil Evans declared: 'What a ridiculous decision to play Turbo in the centres!! 'Give him some freedom' Spoonbold said thru the week .. ffs there's 10 times more freedom at the back. Lol.' X account @OGHustle_Rugby asked: 'You'd stick Turbo on the wing or FB wouldn't you?? Let's play Mr Injury in the centres. Nice one you knuckles.' In a poor first half of footy, the Sea Eagles finally cracked the Tigers' tryline in the final minute and Turbo was heavily involved. With all the play down the left side of the field, Manly was repeatedly repelled by Wests' defensive line. 'Tom's getting a cold out at right centre,' Voss quipped. 'He's watching on with binoculars.' On the last tackle, Trbojevic finally got his chance, taking a cut-out ball from Luke Brooks and laying off a superb flick pass to Jason Saab who did the rest, scoring in the corner. 'Tom offloads to Saab, finally Tom gets a touch, and it's a golden one for the first try in the final minute of the opening half,' Voss said. Reuben Garrick nailed the sideline conversion for a 6-0 lead at the break. Leading up to the game, Trbojevic conceded he had no idea whether his move to centre would be permanent. Trbojevic's yardage has been solid in recent weeks, but he'd broken just five tackles in his past six games leading into Friday night after busting 83 in 20 matches last season. 'I had a lot of input from the coaches, but we've got someone like Lehi there who's very good at fullback,' Trbojevic said on Monday. 'I'm not unfamiliar with playing centre, I've done it before. It'll be a different challenge for me and one I'm excited for. 'It (the move) wasn't really on my mind, but the way that Lehi has been playing (made it easier) and I haven't been playing my best footy. 'It is what it is. I just love playing footy, and playing centre is something else on a footy field and it's no different to me. I just have to go out there and give it a go.' He may have had second thoughts after Skelton's crunching tackle, but he ran out the half well and looms as a key figure in the second 40 minutes. Manly then took control of the match after halftime, building a 16-0 lead with 30 minutes remaining. Benji Marshall's Tigers briefly had some momentum after Alex Seyfarth's 51st minute try, but the Sea Eagles regained control to record a comfortable win.

Manly Sea Eagles vow to crack down after horror fan footage

The Manly Sea Eagles have condemned fan behaviour that was posted to social media on Monday. The footage, posted to the creaturesofmanly Instagram account, shows fans on the hill at 4 Pines park partaking in the controversial 'Run It Straight' challenge. The activity sees opponents charging at each other with the objective to either successfully tackle the opponent or run them over in a hard-hitting collision. On Saturday night after the Sea Eagles had defeated the Brisbane Broncos, fans decided to turn the steep hill into their arena. Fans slowly trotted down the hill as others waited at the bottom to tackle them with countless people watching on and cheering. One man slammed down his drink before taking off down the hill where he was flattened by another individual. Another was hit just as hard while a third carried so much speed he bowled into the crowd at the bottom who all had their phones recording the chaos. The Sea Eagles have vowed to step up security with club CEO Tony Mestrov thankfully nobody was seriously injured. 'It's crazy that people will do this type of thing when they know how dangerous and potentially life-threatening it is,' Mestrov said to The Sydney Morning Herald. 'We will ensure our security is more vigilant in patrolling this outside zone after full-time, at all future home games. 'Any spectators who breach our rules by engaging in this type of behaviour will be banned. Full stop. As a club, we will continue to make the match day experience at 4 Pines Park one that is safe and enjoyable for all.' The footage of Manly fans doing the controversial activity comes after teenager Ryan Satterthwaite died last week while playing the game with friends in Palmerston North, New Zealand. The 19-year-old was taken to hospital by friends but passed away a day later. Leading sports neuroscientist Dr Alan Pearce told that it was sadly 'only a matter of time' until the viral sport took a life and says if it continues this won't be the last time it does. 'This was a matter of time really as sad as that is to say,' Dr Pearce told 'The concern is that this can happen at any level. Even in the sanctioned 'run it' events someone will probably die in that at some point as well. 'It can't be done safely and when there's kids and teens that see it they like to copy what they see online, and this is something that absolutely not should be copied. 'It is the biggest please do not try this at home disclaimer if I've ever seen one'. 'RUNIT' has become an online viral sensation over the past few months, and has attracted tens of millions of views on various social media platforms. Videos of the heavy collisions started doing the rounds on social media in January, with 'Run it Straight Official' and 'RUNIT Championship League' turning the trend into a business. 'I just cannot understand how they could take the most violent aspect of sport (contact) and just turn it into a spectacle where the objective is just to try and knock out or hurt your opponent,' Dr Pearce told earlier this year.

Daly Cherry-Evans shuts down Origin conspiracy, rumours of Maroons rift

Queensland captain Daly Cherry-Evans has hosed down concerns of bias after he was spotted deep in conversation with the referee who will officiate Wednesday's State of Origin series opener. Cherry-Evans and Game 1 referee Ashley Klein were spotted having an extended conversation inside an empty 4 Pines Park a couple of weeks ago, sharing a laugh following a Manly training session. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? The SMH photographed the pair having a good spirited chat, prompting concerns from NSW's camp over whether Cherry-Evans was trying to get the NRL's leading referee on side ahead of State of Origin. The pair reportedly spent around 20 minutes locked in conversation and when asked about what was said, Klein revealed they were simply talking happy families and speaking about their children. 'The mind shudders to think what the hell those two were talking about,' Tigers and Blues great Benny Elias told the SMH. 'Although it is that time of year again when Queensland start buttering up the referees.' Former Maroons skipper Cameron Smith was renowned for being footy's ultimate diplomat by speaking to referees constantly during games, but Cherry-Evans firmly denied he was trying to influence Klein. 'Read into it what you will, but there's nothing there for me,' Cherry-Evans said. 'That's a weekly occurrence for us. If you come down to Manly training on any given week you will snap me with the referees at training. 'I'm not going to be able to remember the conversation exactly because I don't remember it being anything more than a conversation. 'We have referees come out to our training sessions weekly at Manly. They are humans. They are people. They have families and more often than not we're just talking about our kids and how they are misbehaving. 'We are all human and like to talk about our problems, it's as simple as that really. 'I'd like to think I have a good relationship with all referees. 'I'm respectful, empathetic for the way they have to sometimes play to the rules. 'I have a lot of respect and love for the referees. 'I haven't had too many situations where I've crossed the line there.' DCE denies talk of Cobbo rift Cherry-Evans also moved to shut down speculation Broncos star Selwyn Cobbo was left out of the Maroons squad because other Queensland players don't like him. Cobbo was cleared of a fracture in his wrist but was overlooked by Billy Slater, who picked Roosters rookie Robert Toia in the centres. 'Have you guys made that a thing? That we don't like Selwyn,' Cherry-Evans asked reporters. 'I really enjoy playing with Selwyn. 'He's a fantastic footy player, he's an even better person. I just think it's so ridiculous we have to justify our relationship with people, especially someone as good natured as Selwyn Cobbo. 'How and who picks the team, it's got nothing to do with the players, that's a selector and a coach thing, and we always back them to make the right decision.' State of Origin Game 1 kicks off on Wednesday at 8.05pm AEST at Suncorp Stadium.
