Martin Scorsese will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 71st Taormina Film Festival in Sicily this June.
Celebrated director Martin Scorsese is headed back to his ancestral roots in Sicily this June, where he will be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 71st edition of the Taormina Film Festival.
Scorsese, known for his cinematic masterpieces, will not only be recognised for his extraordinary contributions to the world of film but will also have one of his most iconic works, Taxi Driver (1976), screened at the festival. The screening will take place in the stunning ancient Greek amphitheater that overlooks the ever-active Mount Etna, providing a dramatic backdrop to the event.
'It is with immense pride and deep emotion that we welcome Martin Scorsese to the Taormina Film Festival," said Tiziana Rocca, the festival's artistic director and marketing expert. 'His presence is truly a historic event, not only for our festival, but for the entire cultural landscape of Italy."
This visit follows Scorsese's trip to Sicily in late 2024, when he explored the region as part of his preparations for a new documentary centred on the recently discovered Roman shipwreck, Marausa 2, dating back to the third century A.D. During that visit, he also stopped in Polizzi Generosa — the hometown of his paternal grandparents before they emigrated to New York in the early 1900s.
Tiziana Rocca further praised the filmmaker's legacy: 'Scorsese is much more than a filmmaker, he is a living legend, whose unique cinematic voice has explored the human soul, social complexity, and raw emotion with unmatched power and elegance. With this award, we celebrate not only his unparalleled artistic legacy, but also his tireless commitment to the preservation of cinema's memory, the promotion of cinematic culture, and the universal power of storytelling."
Taormina Film Festival, which has played host to icons like Elizabeth Taylor, Pedro Almodóvar, and Steven Spielberg over the years, will run from June 10 to June 14 this year.
