KUNAK: The Kunak District Council (MDKNK) recorded a revenue of RM8,893,573 and total expenditure of RM8,748,710 last year. Kunak District Officer Majaran Osman, who is also MDKNK Chairman, said with a surplus of RM144,863, MDKNK needs to continue increasing momentum to ensure its development programmes and services are enhanced and providing more benefits to the people. Speaking at the Oath Taking Ceremony and Handover of Appointment Letters for the District Council members for the 2025-2027 term, he urged them to equip themselves with knowledge and understanding of the functions, roles and duties. 'The appointment of a District Council member is intended to assist the Local Authority (PBT) in making policies, planning and monitoring the implementation of development programmes. 'Council members are the frontline and therefore understand their roles and functions, in addition to upholding integrity, transparency and public accountability in an effort to bring about changes in the administration and management of the PBT,' said Majaran. MDKNK was established on June 1, 1994, indicating it has spanned over three decades, and demands that every action and plan in the district has a positive and viable impact. Currently, its rating area is 2.0639 square kilometres, while the total area of the Kunak district covers 27.5186 square kilometres. Kunak Assemblywoman Datuk Norazlinah Arif is optimistic that those appointed as Council members can contribute ideas and energy for the development of the district in line with the 'Kunak must progress' mission. A total of 18 Council members were appointed and received their letters at the ceremony. Two of them were absent. Meanwhile, Local Government and Housing Assistant Minister Datuk Isnin Aliasnih urged the District Council members to be creative in their efforts to assist the (PBT in ensuring that the planning and development aspects implemented can provide effective services to the people. He said as appointed Council members, they have a significant trust and responsibility, which is to assist the PBT in planning, formulating policies and delivering the best services to the people. 'Council members need to play a more creative role in the planning and development of the PBT. Participate enthusiastically and consistently in any activities, especially in committee meetings as stipulated in the Standing Orders of the Kunak District Council. 'One of the duties of Council members is to ensure that the PBT's by-laws are used as the main basis and guide by the Council in resolving any problems faced,' he said in his speech text read by Norazlinah, who represented him. Isnin said as a link between the Government and the people through the PBT, Council members must carry out their roles and responsibilities with integrity and authority in decision-making, being trustworthy, transparent and fair in assisting the PBT in resolving issues involving the people. He also urged the Council members to put forward high-impact ideas, especially in the formulation of policies at the Kunak district level. 'It is important to ensure that the system can realise the aspirations for development in the district,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 'We can win this': Liberal candidate Amelia Hamer confident of winning Kooyong as Teal MP admits race now 'too close to call' despite claiming victory
The Coalition is confident of winning back the seat of Kooyong, with Teal MP Monique admitting the seat is now 'too close to call' despite confidently claiming victory on Saturday night. The Coalition is confident of regaining Josh Frydenberg's former seat of Kooyong with Teal MP Monique Ryan admitting the contest is now 'too close to call'. Ms Ryan confidently declared victory in the former blue ribbon seat on Saturday night, appearing before cheering supporters with a sign stating 'Kooyong, we did it' With just over 75 per cent of the vote counted, Ms Ryan is still leading by almost 1891 votes and a two-party-preferred margin of 51 to 49. However the Teal MP has been forced to walk back her claim after the first round of postal votes broke heavily for Liberal candidate Amelia Hamer. 'The election result in Kooyong is too close to call at this point. It will take some days - possibly some weeks - for the outcome to be confirmed,' Ms Ryan said on Monday morning. The Liberal candidate has also confidently declared the Coalition can win the seat. In an email sent to supporters on Sunday night, Ms Hamer said that while there had been an average swing against the Coalition of 3 per cent, Kooyong had managed to buck the trend. 'It is now clear there will be a swing towards us in Kooyong. There are only a small handful of seats nationwide where this is the case,' Ms Hamer said. The swing to the Liberal candidate is currently sitting at 1.75 per cent. 'It's not over yet. There are still 22,000 votes to be counted and we need just 943 extra votes to win,' the candidate said on Sunday. 'Most of the uncounted votes are postal votes. They are coming in very strongly in our favour. If these postal votes continue on their current TPP trajectory of 62-38 -we can win this seat. 'That is not blind hope, that's the raw numbers.' — Dr Monique Ryan MP (@Mon4Kooyong) May 4, 2025 As of Monday morning there have been 7,893 posted votes counted, which have gone in Ms Hamer's favour on a TPP margin of 62.5 to 37.5 per cent. 'The issue is, as is in a lot of these cases, is the postal vote and how strong it is coming in so far for Amelia Hamer,' Connell said. 'When it breaks this strongly (for one side)… you can get the next batch breaking not as favourably. 'Essentially, the first batches can be quite conservative in nature, go really well towards the Liberal Party, and then that rate can drop off quite a bit. 'So it's just one of those vagaries that we want to wait.' Connell said that if Ms Hamer is only able to gain a very narrow lead of around 100 votes after postals, Ms Ryan could still end up on top due to absentee votes. He said around half of the postal votes have now been counted.
