Dingle farm producing 750kg MS/cow to host Kerry Club open day
The Kerry Holstein Friesian Breeder's Club open day will be held on Ronan Sugrue's farm on Sunday, June 1, in Burnham, Dingle from 12:30p.m. to 3:30p.m. Ronan is a fourth generation farmer and has been milking cows since 2014, currently milking 90 pedigree Holstein Friesian cows with a pedigree classification of 87.7 on Dingle harbour. Getting into milking cows, Ronan decided to go Pedigree Holstein Friesian. He felt a higher feed system and higher producing cow would suit him better as the milking platform is limited at 66ac. The weather in his part of the world does not allow for early grazing and it also does not allow for keeping cows out late into the back-end of the year. So, either way, no matter what cow he had, he would have to be buffer feeding and feeding extra meal, so a cow that would respond better to buffer feeding and feeding indoors is the type he felt would suit his system best. Since taking over the farm at 23 years of age, and converting from sucklers to dairy, Ronan has put up a 14-unit Dairymaster swing over parlour, 100 new cubicles, with plenty of slurry storage, and most recently, a new calf shed. Ronan is urging everyone to call out to his farm this Sunday for the open day to see the cows, heifers, and calves and to have a look around the yard, with plenty of food and drink there for everyone on the day. Farm system Ronan is also a breeding adviser with World Wide Sires, so has a keen interest in what type of genetics he brings onto his farm. All the bulls he uses on the farm are America Holsteins, as he hones in on the total performance index (TPI) of the bulls with a particular focus on conformation. He also strives for a bull that will give his replacements 'a decent bit of milk without compromising on components' while selecting traits on longevity. Ronan will use 120 sexed semen straws during the breeding season, which for him starts around the first week of April as he likes to have cows and particularly heifers calving down in early January. The farmer has a high replacement rate as he carries 60 followers altogether each year, 30 heifer calves, and another 30 bulling heifers. Ronan feeds about 2.5t/cow and makes a lot of silage to buffer feed his cows as he has 100ac of land rented to make silage. He runs a multi-cut system, where he cuts silage every six to seven weeks during the spring into the summer months, accumulating four cuts of silage each year. Ronan's cows grazing away Each cut will receive 40 units of nitrogen (N) in chemical form and an additional 2,000gal/ac of slurry will also be spread. The four-cut system along with the extra meal seems to paying itself back as the cows are producing 9,620L/cow at 4.34% fat and 3.51% protein, which equates to over 750kg of milk solids (MS)/cow. Kerry Club open day The Kerry Holstein Friesian Breeders Club have an annual stock judging event and open day, and Ronan is delighted to host it on his farm this year. He said: 'Anyone can attend, it's not just for members of the club – everyone is welcome to come down and have a look around and get involved in stock judging'. In total, 18 animals will be on display for stock judging, consisting of three groups of different classes of stock from first calvers to junior cows and to senior cows. Competitors are then going to rank the stock from one to six and the master judge on the day will pick his order, after which the closest competitors to the master judge's pick will win in their respective categories. There will be three age categories on the day: 12-18 years, 18-26 years and a senior category, with prizes for winners going out on the day. The top three winners in each category will go on to represent the Kerry Friesian Breeder's Club in the All-Ireland Inter-club stock judging at the Irish Holstein Friesian Association (IHFA) open day. The Kerry Holstein Friesian Breeders Club officially launched its annual herds competition last week, which celebrates the club's 50th anniversary this year. The competition is open to pedigree herds. Entries should be sent to Geraldine Harty, herds competition coordinator, Ballylongane, Ballyheigue, Co. Kerry, (087) 816 8281.

Urgent warning after lad dies in viral 'rugby collision' challenge
Ryan Satterthwaite, 19, went "downhill" after a collision in a viral rugby game that is sweeping social media. It has sparked a wave of warnings for any youngsters who want to try it An urgent warning has been issued to British youths after a teenager in New Zealand died after taking part in a viral 'rugby collision' challenge. Ryan Satterthwaite, 19, suffered what turned out to be a fatal head injury after playing a game which sees participants deliberately run into each other without protective gear. The 'run it straight' challenge has been shared widely on social media, and is even said to have been promoted by former professionals. But tragically Ryan's family were forced to turn off his life support. He had been rushed to hospital after friends said he started going "downhill", an never woke up again. Manawatū Police Inspector Ross Grantham confirmed Ryan was playing the game when the devastating injury occurred. Inspector Grantham said: "This young man's death is an absolute tragedy and my thoughts are with his family and friends. "While this was an impromptu game among friends, not a planned event, this tragic outcome does highlight the inherent safety concerns with such an activity. "We would urge anyone thinking about taking part in a game or event like this to consider the significant safety and injury risks." The tackling game has gone viral in recent months. During games, two players charge at each other on a 65-foot "battlefield" with no protective equipment or kid. Organisers even hail it as the "world's fiercest new combat sport". To win, players try to tackle their opponent and take a rugby ball their opponent is holding. According to the rules: "Victory belongs to the one who dominates the collision." Ex-England rugby player George Burgess, 33, won £9,000 after competing in a collision tournament in Australia. Burgess previously competed in the NRL for St George Illawarra three years ago and also won 15 caps for England between 2013 and 2018. He took on giant ex-winger, Nadolo, who weights around 136kg and stands at 195cm. The game has also been slammed by neuroscientist, Dr Helen Murray. She told the NZ Herald: "There is clearly a high risk of head injury in this event. There's no attempt to reduce head acceleration, so I do not support it. Professor Patria Hume added: "This is a reckless and dangerous spectacle. The science is clear, repeated head impacts increase risk of long-term brain damage."

SAPS laud Operation Shanela for reduced crime stats
On 23 May 2025, the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, released the crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year. The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Fannie Masemola, lauded Operation Shanela for the reduced number of community reported crimes. 'Our sustained weekly High Density operations through Operation Shanela are yielding positive results in the reduction of certain categories of violent crimes', said Masemola. However he did concede that the figures of crimes committed and registered during the period of January to March 2025 remain increasingly high. A total of 5727 murders and 10 688 were recorded in three months. Masemola said in analysing the numbers before them, SAPS noticed the following trend: Murder decreased by 12% Sexual Offences increased by 0.0% Attempted Murder decreased by 5.8% Rape increased by 0.3% Trio Crimes decreased by 12.1% 'The above crime picture requires operational reinforcement which is receiving priority focus from the management of the SAPS. And equally a whole of Government and Whole of Society approach. Especially in addressing the scourge of GBVF related crimes', said Masemola. Masemola said since the inception of Operation Shanela in May 2023, police have arrested more than 1,2 million suspects nationwide. According to Masemola, the suspects were involved in various crimes ranging from petty crimes to serious violent crime and to more organised crime. He said more than 468 000 stop and searches were conducted, 274 000 high visibility patrols were organised and a total of 55 775 premises were searched. An additional 5 007 unlicensed liquor premises were shut down for non- compliance. The operators of the shebeens and taverns did not have valid liquor licenses and therefore operating illegally. Masemola noted the successes of Operation Shanela between the period of Jan to March 2025, as the following: 1. 178 757 suspects were arrested in total 2. 20 395 Wanted suspects for various crimes including murder, rape, sexual offences, business and house robbery as well as carjacking. 3. 3 589 suspects arrested for murder and attempted murder 4. 3 134 suspects arrested for rape and attempted rape 5. 21 176 suspects arrested for assault GBH 6. 15 034 suspects arrested for being in the country illegally 7. Police arrested total of 6 855 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs 8. 95 suspects were arrested for Human Trafficking 9. SAPS recovered 842 stolen and hijacked vehicles 10. R2,9 million in cash seized for being proceeds of crime 11. Police seized 1293 explosives used in cash-in-transit robberies, ATM bombings and illegal mining operations. 'This paints a picture of migration crime trends, that when police intensify efforts to destabilize and dislodge the work of syndicates involved in serious and violent crimes, criminals move to more sophisticated type of crime to continue with their criminal activities', Masemola concluded.
