Will exit Turkish aircraft lease in three months, IndiGo tells DGCA
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday said it has granted budget carrier IndiGo a three-month extension to operate two Boeing 777 aircraft taken on wet lease from Turkish Airlines, after the airline submitted an undertaking to terminate the lease within this extended period. The lease period was coming to an end on May 31 and the Indian carrier had sought an extension of six months. The DGCA refused. "However, in order to avoid passenger inconvenience due to immediate flight disruption, IndiGo has been granted a one-time last and final extension of three months upto August 31, 2025, for these damp leased aircraft, based on the undertaking from the airline that, they will terminate the damp lease with Turkish Airline within this extension period, and shall not seek any further extension for these operations," the regulator stated. Under the wet lease terms, the aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance are all provided by the lessor — Turkish Airlines. The lessee — IndiGo — on the other hand, sells tickets and markets the service. The DGCA's approval has come amid escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Turkey. This follows the latter's diplomatic and military support to Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 and Operation Sindoor on May 7. It allowed IndiGo to start flights to Istanbul, which is outside the range of a normal narrowbody plane like A320. For IndiGo, this comes without it immediately investing in widebody aircraft. Of the around 430 planes in IndiGo's fleet, only three are widebody — two leased from Turkish Airlines and one from Norse Atlantic Airways. The remaining are narrowbody aircraft. Speaking to reporters earlier in the day, IndiGo Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pieter Elbers defended the airline's partnership with Turkish Airlines. He said it functions within established international norms and government policies. 'The relationship between countries in the aviation sector is governed by what are known as Air Services Agreements. These define the number of flights that can be operated between nations,' Elbers said. He added that the airline operates in full compliance with the regulatory framework in place. 'If there are any changes in the framework, we will naturally adjust our operations to stay aligned,' he said. Elbers also emphasised that the leased aircraft are serving a clear passenger need, with the vast majority of travellers on these flights being Indian nationals. 'People have made travel plans and bookings. Our priority is to ensure that we continue to serve them. At the same time, we remain alert and responsive to any changes in the regulatory or geopolitical landscape,' he said. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), on May 15, revoked the security clearance of Istanbul-based Çelebi Aviation Holding, citing national security concerns. Çelebi, which provided ground handling services at major Indian airports, challenged the decision in court.

Cebu Pacific leasing aircraft to Saudia's flyadeal
Cebu Pacific CEO Mike Szucs and flyadeal CEO Steven Greenway sign the joint strategic commercial initiatives agreement in Manila on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. (Photo by Ted Cordero) Gokongwei-led budget carrier Cebu Pacific has entered into a strategic partnership with Saudi flag carrier Saudia's low-cost airline flyadeal. At a ceremony in Parañaque City on Wednesday, Cebu Pacific CEO Mike Szucs and flyadeal CEO Steven Greenway signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for both airlines to 'explore joint strategic commercial initiatives.' The initial phase of the MOU covers a wet-lease arrangement between Cebu Pacific and flyadeal, in which the Saudi Arabian low-cost carrier will lease two aircraft —Airbus A320– from the Philippine budget carrier for the summer peak flying season in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia next month. The partnership would also involve joint commercial cooperation and support in maintenance and engineering, according to Szucs. Consequently, Cebu Pacific is also eyeing wet-leasing flyadeal's A320 aircraft to augment its fleet during the busy winter period in Southeast Asia towards the end of the year. 'With Cebu Pacific's growing fleet, we seek to maximize the potential of our increased capacity through all months of the year. The utilization of our capacity by other carriers during our lean season is a way of achieving that,' said Szucs. 'This partnership with flyadeal highlights Cebu Pacific's growing capability to support international carriers through wet leasing and broader operational collaboration. It diversifies our revenue streams and further expands Cebu Pacific's presence beyond the Asia Pacific region,' he added. Greenway said the agreement ''marks flyadeal's first ever strategic airline partnership.' 'This was the starting point for wide-ranging commercial discussions covering a broad range of areas, including more immediate needs of wet-leasing aircraft for flyadeal's busy upcoming summer season. It's a win-win situation all around to bring in Cebu Pacific aircraft during our peak period and vice versa for Mike and his team to explore taking our aircraft for their winter peak later this year,'' he said. — VBL, GMA Integrated News

Striking workers approve latest contract offer from at RTX's Pratt & Whitney
By Dan Catchpole (Reuters) - Striking workers at RTX's Pratt & Whitney approved the company's second contract offer on Tuesday by 74%, according to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. The strike at two of the engine-maker's plants in Connecticut began May 5 after members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers overwhelmingly rejected the first contract offer. Union representatives have previously said the roughly 3,000 striking workers' top priority is getting Pratt to commit to keep work for Lockheed Martin's F-35 fighters in the state. The strike is the first in more than 20 years at the enginemaker's Connecticut sites, where it produces engines for the F-35 and about 70% of the company's geared turbofan engine, which is used in European planemaker Airbus' strong-selling A320 neo family. The vote results "reaffirms our commitment to the people, programs and communities that have powered our legacy — and will shape our next century of aviation innovation,' a Pratt & Whitney spokesperson said. During the strike, Pratt reassigned some engineers to production lines as part of its contingency plan, which was first reported by Reuters.
