Burlington mayor responds to city being named ‘sanctuary jurisdiction'
BURLINGTON, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) – After the Department of Homeland Security released Friday a list of 'sanctuary jurisdictions' that do not comply with federal immigration law, Burlington mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak, whose city was specifically named along with Winooski, Montpelier, and the state of Vermont as a while, said she disagreed that the city is violating federal law. 'Burlington has had a Fair & Impartial Policing Policy for years – this policy offers important guidance to local law enforcement officers, both to prevent discrimination on the basis of protected classifications, and to provide explicit clarity that our local police agency is not charged with enforcement of civil immigration law. 'This policy is crucial for maintaining trust between the community and the police department, and it ensures that people can call for help without fear of discrimination based on immigration status or other protected class.' Burlington Mayor announces who she intends to hire as fire chief The city's official policy, effective as of October of last year, cites the protections against 'unreasonable search and seizure' offered by the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in saying that Burlington police officers do not have the authority to enforce federal immigration law, and may not detain people on behalf of federal immigration authorities without a warrant. Read Burlington's Fair & Impartial Policing Policy hereDownload The list of 'sanctuary jurisdictions' complies with Executive Order 14287, which cites 'public safety and national security risks' and allows the federal government to cut off funding to states, counties, and municipalities on the list. It calls lack of compliance with immigration authories 'lawless insurrection against the supremacy of Federal law'. New Hampshire bill would target sanctuary cities like Lebanon and Hanover The neighboring state of New Hampshire recently banned sanctuary cities in the state, with governor Kelly Ayotte saying, 'New Hampshire will never be a sanctuary for criminals, and we will keep working every day to remain the safest state in the nation.' Neverthless, Lebanon and Hanover in New Hampshire were specifically named on the list. Mulvaney-Stanak says she has no intention of changing the city's policies to match federal demands. 'Burlington, like other communities identified as sanctuary jurisdictions, has a proud history of welcoming immigrants and refugees to our City, and we will not back down from ensuring the safety of all who live, work and visit our community.' Third annual pride weekend coming to Essex
Essex Junction, Vt (ABC22/FOX44) – The celebration is about to begin in Essex, Vermont – the 3rd annual pride weekend begins this evening and continues through Sunday. Kris Smith Thyme, president of Essex Pride, says they've expanded this year into a weekend-long celebration after a successful first two year. The fun begins at 6:30pm – you can head to Maple Street Park to join officials with Essex Pride in making signs for tomorrow's parade. To make it even more tempting, they will be plenty of garlic bread to go around. It'll be an action-packed Saturday, with events ranging from drag story hour and line dancing to an artists market and of course, the parade. The event wraps up on Sunday with a celebratory pride service at the First Congressional Church of Essex Junction. A new edition this year – Smith Thyme says they'll have a vigil honoring transgender individuals who lost their lives due to acts of violence. 'Pride is a party, it is so much a party,' Smith Thyme says, 'but it is also so much more than that. Creating those spaces where people can really let their guard down is really comforting in times like this. There may be awful things happening but we will protect and save each other – first and foremost.' Smith Thyme emphasizes that the parade is happening rain or shine, so if you plan on attending make sure to bring the rain jacket. You can find a full list of this weekends events here. At The Box Office: ‘Our Unwritten Seoul'
COLCHESTER, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) – This week on 'At The Box Office', film critic Julia Swift watched 'Our Unwritten Seoul', a Korean drama about two sisters that swap lives. Swift said that this is 'by far the best k-drama of the year' despite the fact that there are currently only two episodes out. Why? Those episodes were 'so moving and have stuck in my mind.' This show follows a woman with a corporate job in Seoul, and a sister that works odd-jobs outside of the city. Both have different pressures and expectations in life, which is why they decide to swap careers. Despite the premise, 'There is nothing goofy about this show.' The writer captures sibling dynamics that 'push our buttons' in realistic ways. Additionally, the show gives commentary on capitalistic gain and life satisfaction. 'It's a special show,' Swift concluded. Anyone interested can catch up on 'Our Unwritten Seoul' before the next batch of episodes premier on Netflix. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
