TOI spot check reveals frequency of bus service can routinely drop to 45 minutes

Mumbai: Chandrakant Yadav, 28, a resident of Thakur Village in Kandivali and a workman in the electrical industry, faces a daily challenge in commuting, waiting at least 30 minutes for a bus on Route 434 (from Andheri to Sainath Nagar-Bamandaya pada). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Some days, the wait extends to 45 minutes. The bus app is of little help as it shows times that are never maintained." Yadav has no choice but to wait. An auto ride would cost him up to Rs 70. But the frustration of spending a prolonged time at bus stops while watching other routes being serviced every 10-15 minutes is something that he shares with many others in the city. Hundreds of daily bus commuters are of the firm opinion that the transport utility is definitely not as 'BEST' as it used to be even 10 years ago, with the waiting time stretching from 30-45 minutes and sometimes over an hour. To assess the exact frequency of the service, TOI recently undertook a real-time spot check by waiting for buses on several routes across Mumbai. The findings throw light on the nature of the problems that have beset the fleet. At nearly every bus stop, short distance and feeder service routes demonstrated a strong frequency with buses arriving at intervals of 5-15 minutes. However, for the majority of longer routes, especially on north-south or east-west corridors, waiting time stretched beyond belief. At least 40% of routes in the city cover long distances, 5-10 km and above. On route 469 Limited (Maharana Pratap Chowk Mulund West to Goregaon West), a TOI correspondent noted a bus arriving around 8 am, with the next one not scheduled before 11 am—a striking three-hour gap on what was once a route with 15-20 minute frequency. "It is a sorry state of affairs. We just don't have the buses to deploy on this route, and are using a couple of old buses just to keep it running," said a bus station staff member managing the schedule. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On another route, 302 (Mulund to Dharavi) from the same station, service was completely suspended recently due to a lack of buses. In contrast, in the same suburb, AC bus A-401 is attracting sizeable crowds. Commuters from Mulund station to Vaishali Nagar (2.5 km) form queues of 15-20 people at any given time, with observed frequencies of 3-5 minutes during peak hours and 7 minutes during off-peak times. However, take a longer route, where a bus has to negotiate its way across the length or breadth of the city, and the experience is likely to be a frustrating one. On route 434 - Agarkar Chowk Andheri station to Bamandaya pada bus stop, Andheri East, this correspondent endured a 40-minute wait. Adjacent stops for route 333 (Mahakali Caves via Chakala) and 415 (for SEEPZ) saw passengers briskly boarding buses at frequencies of 10-15 minutes. An elderly woman, Shanta Magar, waiting on route 434, said, "I come here daily and despite being old, have to wait without any proper shelter or seat (just a pole with bus number) for 40-50 minutes to catch a bus home." Similarly, on the busy Sion-Panvel Road at Punjabwadi bus stop near TISS, TOI observed notable waiting times: route A-502 (Deonar to Nerul) 45 minutes; A-21 (Colaba to Trombay) 35 minutes; A-60 (Deonar to Borivali) 39 minutes; and A-92 (Anushakti Ngr to Tardeo) 45 minutes. At Bandra West, a spot check at the Hill Road bus stop from 4 pm onwards showed a route 215 (Bandra reclamation to Tata colony) service arriving at 4.30 pm, with locals saying the wait can sometimes go up to 40 minutes. For route A-3, Jijamata Udyan to Navy Nagar, Colaba on May 27, a check revealed waits as long as 30 minutes. This route serves Mazgaon and connects to Crawford Market, CSMT and Colaba. A commuter recalled a senior citizen who took her difficulties to the BEST management at Electric House in Colaba, but matters had hardly improved. BEST general manager SVR Srinivas admitted that waiting times are often exceeding one hour and explained that this was why routes were being restructured and reviewed for occupancy. "If it is 10-20% occupancy, we cannot deploy more buses. Proper fleet utilisation is important. We are also focusing more on shorter routes that provide last mile connectivity," he said, adding that a commuter feedback-based study was planned. He further stated that BEST aimed to increase the load factor to 75%. "Waiting time should not exceed 10 to 15 minutes. In a city like Mumbai, or even tier 2 cities, people do not or should not wait 45 minutes to an hour. To achieve this, we have undertaken route rationalisation," Srinivas said, adding that more buses arriving in fleet -- around 1,500 by September -- could improve frequency on the longer routes very soon. Analysts attributed long waits to a shortage of road-ready buses, and traffic congestion on arterial routes. Former BEST committee member Sunil Ganacharya said, "There was a time when trains would be delayed, but BEST buses would be on time, and stick to the timetable for over 500 routes. But now, you don't know when or whether the next bus will arrive, leaving you frustrated." (With inputs from Sunil Nair & Joeanna Rebello Fernandes)

Govt sets a cool exports target for AC makers

Kolkata: The government has asked air-conditioner manufacturers to push exports on a much larger scale because the boost to the industry via the production linked incentive (PLI) scheme for white goods such as AC and LED lights has not reflected in shipments to foreign shores. Minister of commerce and industry Piyush Goyal discussed this in a meeting with senior industry executives earlier this month, people aware of the development said. The government is of the view that the category has huge potential to grow India's electronics export value after smartphones. It wants India to export 15-16 million units in the next four years and compete with China and Thailand which have emerged as big export hubs, industry executives said. At present, India exports around 2 million units. In contrast, China exported 85 million units of ACs in 2024, worth $26 billion, while Thailand exported 19 million units and generated over $7 billion in revenue, as per Chinese AC industry body and media reports. As per commerce ministry data, India exported ACs worth ₹3,683 crore ($435 million) in 2024-25, which grew 32% year-on-year (yoy). In contrast, India's smartphone exports in 2024-25 rose 55% yoy to $24.1 billion. Companies who have applied for AC PLI include LG Electronics , Voltas , Daikin, Blue Star , Amber, Johnson Hitachi, Panasonic , Haier, Midea and Havells . The industry has been asked to prepare a list of support initiatives it might require to start exports other than the existing PLI scheme. "The government wants manufacturers, especially PLI beneficiaries, to export ACs which has not started in a big way as it was difficult to compete with the Chinese in pricing and scale," said Pradeep Bakshi, managing director at Voltas, the Tata-owned AC manufacturer. "But there is a renewed push from the government who wants to know from the manufacturers the disabilities in exports," he said. The government has also asked the industry to prepare a report on the disabilities in AC exports to be submitted in June. "We have been discussing the project with the government," said Jasbir Singh, chief executive officer of Amber Enterprises , India's largest AC contract manufacturer. "After China, Thailand too has become a big exporter of ACs in the last five years," said Singh. When the government announced the PLI scheme for white goods in 2021, it had estimated AC and LED light exports worth ₹64,400 crore by 2026. While some companies are exporting LED lights, exports of ACs are still relatively small with companies like Blue Star, Daikin, Havells and Voltas exporting in small quantities, some to the US. India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) chairman Pankaj Mohindroo said after mobile phones, AC is a category with huge exports potential. "And like mobile phones, PLI has a significant impact on the evolution of the local manufacturing ecosystem," he said. ICEA is setting up an AC export task force with the Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Manufacturers Association to draw a roadmap and monitor its execution.

EBITDA stood at Rs 68 crore in Q4 FY25, down 35.84% year-on-year but up 25.92% quarter-on-quarter. EBITDA margin declined to 19% in Q4 FY25, compared to 25% in Q4 FY24 and 17% in Q3 FY25. Total expenses fell 6.96% to Rs 306.82 crore in Q4 FY25 over Q4 FY24. During the quarter, the cost of materials consumed stood at Rs 180.64 crore (down 25.84% YoY), while employee benefits expense was at Rs 22.88 crore (down 6.72% YoY). The companys revenue from the amines & specialty chemicals business stood at Rs 350.92 crore (down 15.25% YoY), while income from the hotel division was at Rs 9.29 crore (up 14.83% YoY) during the period under review. During the quarter, amines volumes stood at 8,316 MT; amines derivatives volumes stood at 8,389 MT, and specialty chemicals volumes stood at 7,342 MT. On a full year basis, the companys consolidated net profit tanked 31.73% to Rs 158.59 crore on 14.89% decline in revenue from operations to Rs 1,397.08 crore in FY25 over FY24. On the performance, D. Ram Reddy, Managing Director, commented, During Q4 FY25, our business performance showed improvement compared to the rest of the financial year, supported by favorable global macroeconomic conditions. As volume uptake gradually increases, we expect EBITDA and PAT margins to improve in line with broader industry recovery trends. However, geopolitical tensions and tariff-related challenges across global markets may continue to impact growth across several sectors in which we operate. These factors have weighed on domestic demand, but we anticipate that better utilization of expanded capacities will support margin recovery in the coming quarters. Pharmaceutical sector demand remained steady, contributing to base volumes, while the agrochemical segment exhibited volatility during the quarter. We continue to make progress on our strategic capex initiatives, including Electronic Grade DMC, Propylene Glycol Pharma Grade, and Dimethyl Ether projects, which are moving forward as planned. On the sustainability front, we are pleased to announce that our 6 MW AC Solar Power Plant was commissioned on 2 nd April, 2025. The plant is being brought online in a phased manner under Grid Connectivity, and the power generated will be utilized for captive consumption. Looking ahead, we remain focused on enhancing operational efficiencies, managing input costs and expanding our product portfolio to deliver sustained value to all stakeholders. Meanwhile, Balaji Amines, through its subsidiary Balaji Speciality Chemicals, is investing approximately Rs 750 crore in a new expansion project. The greenfield project will manufacture a range of products, including Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN), Sodium Cyanide (NaCN) 30% solution and 100% solid, EDTA/EDTA-2Na, Benzyl Cyanide (BnCN), Phenylacetic Acid (PAA), and Triethyl Orthoformate (TEOF)/Trimethyl Orthoformate (TMOF). This project is currently under execution and is expected to be commissioned by the end of FY 2025-26. Additionally, a brownfield project for manufacturing EDA-based products at Unit-I is progressing as planned and is expected to be commissioned in FY 2026-27. Further, the company has recommended a final dividend of Rs 11 per equity share, which translates to 550% on a face value of Rs 2 per share. The dividend will be payable subject to approval by the shareholders at the 37th Annual General Meeting of the company. The board has approved the re-appointment of A. Prathap Reddy as executive chairman of the company for a period of five years, effective from 1 April 2026, subject to shareholder approval. Additionally, the board has approved the re-appointment of D. Ram Reddy as managing director for a further term of five years, also effective from 1 April 2026, pending shareholder approval. Balaji Amines is a leading manufacturer of aliphatic amines in India. Broadly, the company is specialized in manufacturing methyl amines, ethyl amines, derivatives of specialty chemicals, and natural products, and its business is broadly classified into three segments: amines, specialty chemicals, and derivatives.
