Mavericks Closing In on Cooper Flagg for No 1 Draft Pick
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. With the 2024-25 NBA season coming to a close, soon all eyes will be on the offseason. This offseason is expected to be one for the books, and the first big event on the calendar will be the 2025 NBA Draft. The draft, which will take place in late June, is one worth watching, and it will feature one of the best prospects of the last decade, Duke superstar phenom Cooper Flagg. Flagg is on track to be the top selection in this year's draft, and all indications suggest the Mavericks will use their No. 1 pick on him later this month. Sources tell ESPN that the Mavericks will host Flagg for a workout in mid-June. Photo byESPN's Shams Charania and Jonathan Givony shared how the Mavericks will work out Flagg, and they have no intention of working out any other prospects. "The Mavericks have no plans to work out any other prospects for the No. 1 pick and have made clear publicly and privately that they plan on selecting Flagg when Adam Silver puts them on the clock to open the 2025 NBA Draft." Dallas made it clear from the jump that they had no plans to move the No. 1 pick after landing it in the draft lottery. That stance hasn't changed — and the fact that they're reportedly not entertaining any other prospect speaks volumes about how highly they view Flagg. Flagg is fresh off a legendary freshman campaign at Duke — one that's already being talked about as one of the greatest ever by a college player. His accolades tell the story: AP Player of the Year, consensus First-Team All-American, Lute Olson Award winner, Julius Erving Award winner, Wayman Tisdale Award winner, ACC Player of the Year, First-Team All-ACC, ACC Rookie of the Year, ACC All-Defensive Team, and ACC All-Freshman Team. The Mavericks have had a roller coaster of a season. They start the season a bit shaky, and then they make what most call a boneheaded move by trading their superstar, Luka Doncic, to the Lakers. After that, they endure a stretch of injuries unlike any other, and they end the season with the No. 1 pick. Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison has endured a ton of criticism, and he deserves it; however, that could all change in the coming months with how he builds this team for the upcoming 2025-26 season. Mike Krzyzewski Names Best Player in Duke Basketball History Without Hesitation
Mike Krzyzewski Names Best Player in Duke Basketball History Without Hesitation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Duke Blue Devils have been considered one of the top teams in college basketball for the past several seasons, now riding the success of head coach Jon Scheyer. Advertisement Before Scheyer took over the program, recently capping off his third season at Duke, the Blue Devils were headed by one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history, Mike Krzyzewski. A video of Krzyzewski surfaced on Tuesday, where he spoke on the state of the Blue Devils' college basketball program. Krzyzewski reviewed Cooper Flagg, one of the top freshmen in the country this past season. He also named some of the most talented players to have ever played for the Blue Devils, including Grant Hill whom he hailed as the greatest player to ever play at Duke. "Grant (Hill) is the best player to ever play at Duke," Krzyzewski said. "Laettner is the most accomplished... Cooper is definitely the best Freshman that has ever played." Grant Hill played with the Duke Blue Devils from 1990 to 1994. Advertisement During his time at Duke, Hill led the Blue Devils to two national titles. He was named a consensus First-Team All-American in 1994 and a consensus Second-Team All-American in 1993. Hill also won the ACC Player of the Year award during the 1994 college basketball season. Grant Hill played for the Detroit Pistons from 1994 to 2000. He also spent time with the Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Clippers. Hill retired from the NBA in 2013, finishing his basketball career as a member of the 1997 All-NBA First-Team, four-time member of the All-NBA Second-Team and a seven-time All-Star. Patrick Mahomes Called out by Chiefs Teammate Over Dallas Mavericks Posts
While most NBA fans were either confused or upset about the Dallas Mavericks, who had just a 1.8% chance of winning the 2025 NBA draft lottery, landing the No. 1 overall pick and the right to draft Duke freshman sensation Cooper Flagg, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes wasn't among them. Mahomes, a lifelong Mavericks fan who grew up just an hour-and-a-half outside of Dallas and played college football at nearby Texas Tech, which is just a few short hours away from the American Airlines Center, was notably disappointed when his hometown team traded away superstar Luka Doncic back at the beginning of February. Advertisement 'I've watched Luka since he was 18 years old,' Mahomes said at the time. 'I remember going to a practice and it was Dirk [Nowitzki] and Luka, and seeing his maturation and how great of a basketball player he's become, it's been fun to watch. As a Dallas fan, it hurts me.' Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II cheers during the second half of the game between the Dallas Mavericks and Denver Nuggets at American Airlines Jairaj-Imagn Images So after the season the Mavericks just endured—losing a significant number of fans in the aftermath of the Doncic trade, followed by a season-ending injury to Kyrie Irving and an early postseason ousting in the NBA play-in tournament—Mahomes will take any kind of win he can get. Moments after the NBA announced the Mavericks had won the No. 1 overall pick, the 29-year-old two-time NFL MVP took to X to celebrate presumably landing Flagg, the prize of the 2025 draft class. Advertisement 'OMGGGGG!! Let's goo!!!!!' Mahomes wrote, followed by a second post that read 'GOOO @dallasmavs.' Mahomes' celebration didn't last long—18 minutes, to be exact—before one of his teammates tried to rain on his parade. 'Pat you know this was rigged right ? @PatrickMahomes,' defensive end Charles Omenihu responded. While Omenihu was likely just having a laugh at Mahomes' expense, some fans in the comment section actually agreed that they believed the NBA rigged the draft lottery in Dallas' favor. 'Charles you are spot on here!' one fan commented. 'Charles ain't wrong,' a second fan agreed. '[Expletive] yeah let Pat know Charles!' another fan responded. Advertisement 'Yep rigged lol 🤣🤣🤣,' one user stated. '💯,' another user replied. Even if Omenihu's wild accusation was true, Mahomes would still likely be unbothered by his teammate's rebuttal given the prize is an 18-year-old superstar-in-the-making. Flagg was a consensus first-team All-American who won seemingly every major college award including National College Player of the Year, ACC Player of the Year, ACC Rookie of the Year, and several others. Resurfaced Cooper Flagg Quotes Suggest He Wants to Be Drafted By San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs can boast two picks in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft, provided they don't trade either selection. As things currently stand, the Spurs will likely select eighth and 14th overall, with the Atlanta Hawks owing them a first-round selection as a part of the Dejounte Murray trade. The Spurs, between their two picks, have only a 6.7 percent chance of landing Cooper Flagg and pairing him with Victor Wembanyama. Advertisement Flagg, in his lone college season, led the Duke Blue Devils to the Final Four, won AP Player of the Year, the Wooden Award, was an All-American, took home the Naismith Award, and was the ACC Player of the Year. He is a highly touted two-way force and will be the top pick, regardless of who lands him. Flagg, who is from Maine, grew up as a Boston Celtics fan, although Boston will not have a chance to draft him. Before his college season, he did a "rapid fire" interview and revealed some respect for the Spurs. Flagg not only considers Kawhi Leonard the greatest defender of all time, but he also thinks that Gregg Popovich is the greatest coach of all time. That's remarkably telling, especially since his Northeast roots could have easily pushed him in the direction of Tom Heinsohn or Red Auerbach for the best coach and Bill Russell or Kevin Garnett for the best defender. Advertisement Of course, longtime Duke skipper Mike Krzyzewski could have been considered as well, but Flagg may have revealed his hand. A duo of Flagg and Wembayama in the frontcourt with De'Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle in the backcourt would be a nightmare on both sides of the ball for opponents. The NBA Draft order will be revealed on Monday at 7:00 PM live on ESPN. Check out the Inside the Spurs home page for more news, analysis, and must-read articles. Tennessee Titans rookie QB Cam Ward already showcasing himself as 'great leader'
Tennessee Titans rookie QB Cam Ward already showcasing himself as 'great leader' Show Caption Hide Caption Does Cam Ward have the pieces of a successful rookie quarterback? Former NFL quarterback Jordan Palmer has 3 things he looks for in rookie quarterbacks, and 1st overall draft pick Cam Ward has what he's looking for. Sports Seriously Quarterback Cam Ward is already doing his part to ingratiate himself as the Tennessee Titans' next franchise quarterback. Ward reported to rookie minicamp and started the process of learning everyone's name in the organization. 'I'm about business. I really want to be a pro. I want to be one of the great ones, and I want to be a good teammate at the end of the day,' Ward told the media. 'I want to win a lot of football games in my career.' TITANS 2025 SCHEDULE: Tennessee win-loss record predictions The 2025 No. 1 overall pick hopes to establish himself as a leader. 'I want to be a leader. I want to be there for my teammates,' Ward said. 'When everything goes down, I want to be the person to lift everybody back up.' So far so good. Ward's rookie teammates already view him as a chairman of the team. "He's just a great leader," Titans rookie tight end Gunnar Helm said to reporters. "Super easy to talk to, super easy to connect with, super easy to communicate with on the field." Titans head coach Brian Callahan, who played quarterback at UCLA, doesn't want to place the leadership burden on Ward too soon. He believes it'll happen organically as Ward gets more comfortable in the NFL. 'It's most important for quarterbacks, but Cam in particular. He just has to be himself. We're not asking him to do anything outside of what he would normally do. I think that personality will start to show as he moves forward and gets more comfortable and understands more,' Callahan said. 'Obviously, he's got to worry about himself first. He's got to make sure he knows what to do, how to do it and he's doing the things that he needs to do. But the leadership things come naturally. Those things show up as organically as possible as you're around players more and get more comfortable with people's personalities.' NFL SCHEDULE: Tracking latest news, rumors, updates about 2025 schedule Ward, who won the 2024 Davey O'Brien Award (college football's top quarterback) and was Miami's first player to win ACC Player of the Year, was the franchise's (including Oilers) third player to be drafted with the first overall pick. Tennessee has been marred by inept quarterback play in recent seasons. Will Levis didn't develop into a starting-caliber quarterback after he was selected in the second round in 2023. Levis tied an NFL-high with 18 turnovers last year and his 81.4 passer rating in 2024 ranked 29th among 32 quarterbacks with at least 300 dropbacks. The Titans haven't had a 3,000-yard passer since Ryan Tannehill in 2021. While it's incumbent upon quarterbacks to be leaders, it's more important for Ward to lead by example on the field, which is likely why Callahan stated Ward must 'worry about himself first.' The Titans have finished last in the AFC South in back-to-back seasons. They desperately need a quarterback to help them get out of the division basement.
