29 July 2025 01:10 SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)Young Emirati boys and girls have learnt the cherished tradition of weaving 'mekhrafa' in a special month-long programme organised by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority (ADHA) for the Nabdh Al Falah community hub. The 'mekhrafa' is a traditional Emirati basket handcrafted and woven from palm fronds. It is used to collect, carry, and present dates primarily during the harvest season. For the month of July, ADHA organised workshops that pass down this distinctive basket-weaving tradition from the seniors who know it by heart to the curious youth. ADHA's "Al Mekhrafa" programme for Nabdh Al Falah featured a line-up of engaging activities, from classic games to art sessions. Among the highlights are live demonstrations and hands-on workshops for palm frond weaving – walking participants through the making of 'mekhrafa'.At the studio, young visitors from 6 to 9 years old can explore palm-related heritage through art sessions. The programme revolves around the palm tree not only as a cultural treasure for Emirati society but as a source of daily sustenance. The remaining workshops will take place on July 29 and arts and crafts, there are educational lectures on palm farming, its environmental importance, and the date varieties found in the UAE. Family-friendly competitions are held, too. Nabdh Al Falah regularly holds programmes that bring the community together in activities designed to preserve Emirati heritage and strengthen national identity. Run by the Department of Community Development (DCD) in Abu Dhabi, the programmes are held in line with the goals of the Year of Community. The move comes as part of the leadership's vision to strengthen social cohesion, tighten bonds between generations, and create a sense of shared responsibility in the community. The ADHA's "Mekhrafa" programme was held in collaboration with DCD.

24 June 2025 11:59 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)The Family Development Foundation (FDF) and the Abu Dhabi Housing Authority (ADHA), in collaboration with the Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi (DCD), have offered the obtain approval to Extend the Repayment Period of Housing loan service for primary caregivers of senior citizens. The service forms part of the Barakatna initiative, launched by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al service aims to empower children to support their parents' daily needs while maintaining financial stability by allowing an extension of their housing loan repayment period of up to five years. This reduces monthly instalments, easing financial pressure while ensuring continued care for senior family Al Baloushi, Director of the Department of Strategic Planning and Institutional Development at the FDF, said: "This initiative reflects a collaborative approach among key strategic partners to improve the quality of life for senior citizens and enhance family cohesion. By easing the daily burdens on primary caregivers, the service supports them in delivering comprehensive and effective care that reflects the deeply rooted Emirati values of filial piety and family care."Al Baloushi further highlighted that the initiative activates the family's role within the broader social care system and promotes a culture of intergenerational solidarity. By providing caregivers with necessary support and guidance, the aim is to reinforce the dignity and value of senior citizens within families and society at large, and the importance of shared responsibility in their care and Abdulrahman Al Marzouqi, Acting Executive Director of Policy Development and Strategic Sector at ADHA, stated that one of the key eligibility conditions is that the applicant must be the primary caregiver of a parent aged 60 or above, and must have an active, fully repayable individual basic loan from ADHA, such as those granted for building, purchasing or rebuilding a Marzouqi added that applications must be submitted through the TAMM platform, along with all required documentation. The FDF will verify eligibility, after which ADHA will extend the repayment period within one week. This step forms part of the Abu Dhabi Government's ongoing efforts to enhance the well-being of senior citizens, ensure housing stability, and deliver high-quality services that meet their needs while empowering caregivers in fulfilling their social and family responsibilities toward their elderly parents. Abu Dhabi approves $1.8bn housing benefits

Abu Dhabi will provide housing benefits worth AED6.75bn ($1.8bn) to support more than 4,300 citizens in the emirate. Under the directives of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in his capacity as Ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, has approved a housing benefits package worth AED6.75bn ($1.8bn), benefiting 4,356 Emirati citizens across the emirate. The approved housing benefits package includes: Housing loans amounting to AED5.08bn ($1.4bn) benefiting 3,172 citizens Land grants and ready-built houses valued at AED1.585bn ($432m) benefiting 1,100 citizens Exemptions from housing loan repayments totalling more than AED94.8m ($25.8m) benefiting 84 senior citizens, limited-income retirees and beneficiaries of deceased citizens This package brings the total housing benefits delivered to citizens in Abu Dhabi since the establishment of the Abu Dhabi Housing Authority to over 123,000, amounting to approximately AED168.85bn ($46bn).
