'Lucky' Adelaide goalsneak sent for surgery
Adelaide forward Josh Rachele has been sent for knee surgery, with an unclear timeline on when he'll play again. The 22-year-old has been cleared of serious ligament damage in his left knee injured in Sunday's win over Melbourne. But scans revealed Rachele tore a tissue at the back of the knee joint and also suffered bone bruising when landing awkwardly in a marking contest. The Crows will have a better understanding of Rachele's outlook post-surgery, the club's fitness boss Darren Burgess says. "He'll have surgery to elevate the bone in his knee and likely be in a brace for a few weeks," Burgess said. "Once out of the brace, we'll progress his training loads from there." Rachele was relieved when allayed of fears he'd torn his anterior cruciate ligament or posterior cruciate ligament. "Worst case scenario, your head goes to that (ACL) instantly, so I am very lucky ... structurally the ACL and PCL are all good," he told reporters. Rachele had been in the midst of a career-best scoring season, kicking 25 goals from a dozen games. But he'll likely be absent beyond third-placed Adelaide's season-shaping stretch against the Western Bulldogs, Gold Coast, Port Adelaide and Hawthorn.

Fremantle Dockers forward Michael Walters retires from AFL after battling knee injury
Fremantle Dockers forward Michael Walters has announced his retirement from the AFL after a career lasting 239 games. Walters has been battling a knee injury this year that has prevented him from playing for the Dockers so far this season. The veteran kicked 365 goals for Fremantle, and played in the club's only grand final appearance in 2013. In a statement, Walters said he was at peace with the decision. "I have been working my backside off to try and get back to play some form of footy and while mentally I am still committed, unfortunately my body wouldn't allow me to continue playing," he said. "I never left a stone unturned, I tried to return and play again at the top level and it just didn't work out." Walters was taken with pick 53 in the 2008 draft.

Frustrated Tigers star Lynch facing ban for wild swing
Fiery Richmond spearhead Tom Lynch is staring at a lengthy suspension after taking an ugly swing at Adelaide defender Jordon Butts at the MCG. Lynch lost the plot in the second quarter of the Tigers' match against the Crows on Sunday, striking Butts off the ball following a contest between the pair. The dual Tigers premiership player viciously threw his right hand towards his opponent, making contact with Butts' head. Tensions rise following this incident involving Tom Lynch and Jordon Butts.#AFLTigersCrows — AFL (@AFL) June 29, 2025 Fortunately for both players, Lynch failed to connect completely, ensuring the blow was minor. Crows players ran to remonstrate with Lynch near Richmond's half-forward flank, with the 32-year-old reported by umpires on the spot. Although Butts was not injured in the incident, match review officer Michael Christian will likely take a dim view of the behaviour. It is rare for AFL players in the modern era to launch into a strike with such intent and ferocity. It completed a horror half for Lynch, who failed to register a disposal, but gave away five free kicks. Only minutes before the incident with Butts, Lynch was angrily arguing with umpires about one of the free kicks he had given away.

AFL 2025: Melbourne will continue to explore playing star midfielder forward of the ball
Melbourne will continue to explore hard-nosed midfielder Jack Viney as a forward option in the back-end of its floundering 2025 season. Viney played his first game back from concussion and a broken hand prior to last weekend's bye. That bye came at a good time for the Demons after losses to St Kilda, Collingwood and Port Adelaide. Melbourne has struggled to be an offensive force at times this season, kicking more goals than points in just five matches. But coach Goodwin sees 'scope to develop' Viney as another option closer to goal despite the left-footer's modest career goal tally (68). 'He's had one game back in the team, the first priority for Jack was to get him back in the team, he's our vice-captain and a really important player,' Goodwin said of Viney, who attended 17 centre bounces against the Power. 'We will continue to explore not only him as a midfielder but him as a forward. We think he's got great scope to develop in both areas. 'That's where we'll continue to put him.' Young forward Jacob van Rooyen was recalled to the senior side after a stint in the reserves but has struggled to make waves across the past fortnight. Goodwin said Melbourne was committed to supporting van Rooyen, who was 'in a bit of a cycle' with his form. 'He's certainly improved in some aspects of his game and he's still got a lot to work on,' he said. 'We're still working with a young key forward that's developing his game. It's competitive for spots, you look at a Matthew Jefferson who is playing really strong footy at the VFL level. 'He's certainly pressing his claims to come in. We've got some developing key forwards – they take time, they go on their own little journey about their development. 'Sometimes it's you're in, you play, you stay; sometimes you're in, you play, you go out, you learn, you grow, you get better, you come back in. 'Jacob is in a bit of that cycle right now. We're committed to making him the best player he can possibly be – he's still growing and still got things to work on.' The congested the ladder means the Demons could slip into the bottom four with a poor loss to Gold Coast this weekend or surge as high as 10th with a strong win.
