‘Half his blood stuck in machine': UP kidney patient dies during dialysis as power fails, no diesel for generator
A 26-year-old kidney patient in Bijnor died during dialysis when a power outage struck the district hospital, and the backup generator lacked fuel. Sarfaraz Ahmad's treatment was interrupted, leaving his family pleading for help. BIJNOR: A kidney patient died during dialysis after a power cut halted treatment, and the hospital generator had no fuel, even as an official inspection was underway at the Bijnor district hospital, authorities said on Saturday. Sarfaraz Ahmad, 26, from Phulsanda village, was undergoing dialysis when electricity failed. Hospital staff said they could not resume treatment because the contracted firm had not supplied diesel. CDO Purna Borah, inspecting the hospital at the time of the incident on Friday, found five other patients lying there without power, lights or fans. Sarfaraz's mother told TOI, "When the power went off, the machine stopped midway with almost half his blood stuck inside it. I begged the staff to start the generator, but no one helped. My son died soon after." Medical experts TOI spoke to, however, said it is highly unlikely that a large amount of Sarfaraz's blood could have been inside the machine at any given point. A doctor clarified, "During haemodialysis, only a fraction - about 200 to 250 ml - of blood circulates through the machine at any time. However, an abrupt power failure can delay the process and destabilise critically ill patients" The hospital staff blamed Sanjeevani, the private firm running the unit under a public-private partnership since 2020, for repeatedly failing to supply diesel. DM Jasjit Kaur visited the hospital and seized all dialysis-unit records and assured strict action. Kaur said, "There was mismanagement and no cleanliness in the unit. A case is being registered against the agency. In addition, it will be blacklisted." Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Rain & polls near, Ambazari hyacinth removal gets push
1 2 Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has resumed a massive drive to remove water hyacinth which has swamped nearly one-thirds of the Ambazar lake as part of its flood-prevention measure and have deployed poclain machines and other equipment. With the civic elections scheduled to be held later this year, flooding could become a major poll issue, especially when memories of the September 23, 2023, floods are still fresh. In case there is a repeat of 9/23 disaster and city areas get inundated, it will hand down a potential ammunition to those aspiring to contest the impending NMC polls to go ballistic against the civic administration and the BJP-ruled state govt. The citizens affected by the 9/23 flood are already unhappy with the slow pace of works like construction of retaining wall along the Nag River. While the officials say the renewed efforts to remove the hyacinth are part of its pre-monsoon preparedness, there could be a political push too to get the drive completed before peak monsoon, said sources. Officials say the thick growth of hyacinth at the overflow point hindered the smooth discharge of water into downstream drains and the Nag River, leading to backflow and urban flooding, especially during the last monsoon. While the NMC has been periodically removing the weed, experts say the root cause needs long-term scientific intervention. The civic body also sought assistance from the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (Neeri) to study and control the hyacinth problem. According to officials, water hyacinth — commonly mistaken for water lilies — covered nearly one-third of Ambazari Lake just a few days ago. However, with intensified efforts, tonnes of the invasive aquatic plant are now being extracted daily. The floating mats of hyacinth became a major concern, especially after recent rains, when they were seen drifting into the Nag River and clogging the flow of stormwater. Four arrested after Noida bizman's murder unveils currency scam
Noida: Four men have been arrested in Noida for their alleged involvement in a currency exchange scam that culminated in the murder of a 40-year-old businessman earlier this week. The suspects, part of a well-oiled ring, used a network of rented flats, staged foreign exchange deals, and violent tactics to trap and rob currency dealers. The suspects were identified as Ajay Kumar Sharma (48) and his son Mukul Sharma (25), both from Ghaziabad's Indirapuram, along with Akash Upadhyay (24) from Mahoba and Aryan Yadav (25) from Delhi. Police said Mukul and Akash were injured in a gunfight while attempting to flee a checkpoint near Noida's Sector 54. Officers recovered firearms, a stolen motorcycle and cash—both Indian and foreign—worth Rs 10.3 lakh from them. The case came to light after Ompal Bhati, a currency exchange operator from Sector 18, was shot dead in a rented flat in Sector 12. Bhati had reportedly gone there to exchange Rs 10 lakh in cash after being lured into a fake currency deal. Police said the group's modus operandi involved scouting for currency dealers, posing as genuine clients seeking to convert foreign currency, and renting properties briefly with token deposits to stage deals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Once the target arrived with cash, the accused would rob them at gunpoint and flee. Investigators revealed that Ajay Sharma masterminded the operations while his son Mukul, Akash, and Aryan surveyed and met with victims. In Bhati's case, the group had claimed they wanted to exchange Canadian dollars worth Rs 7 lakh. Akash even withdrew Rs 3 lakh to lend credibility to the fake deal. After Bhati arrived at the Sector 12 flat, the suspects attempted to rob him, but he resisted and was fatally shot. The group contacted Ajay post the murder, who advised them to take shelter at Aryan's house in Delhi. Police say they had defrauded another exchange operator of 8,000 dirhams just before their arrest. All four have been charged with murder, fraud, and possession of illegal firearms.
