Google tests new looks for the search bar on the Chrome app for Android
Google has been testing different looks for the beta version of the Google Chrome app for Android, looking for the best place to put a shortcut to its AI Mode. Announced earlier this year at Google I/O, AI Mode is designed to help Google fight off challenges to its dominating search business from AI apps. AI Mode stops those with a complicated search query from having to go through multiple search results to get the information they want. To help push AI Mode, Google has redesigned the search bar on its apps. That's because, ideally, if you have a question you need answered, the search bar is where you would go first to help get your answer. Google is now looking to see how it can best put AI Mode in front of the eyeballs looking at the Android version of Chrome. Mishaal Rahman wrote that he found a new look for the Chrome search bar when he opened a beta version of the mobile browser on an Android phone. Google had moved the Lens shortcut and voice search icons out of the search bar and placed them below the bar. The current Chrome search bar on the left and one of the new looks being tested on the right. | Image credit-Android Authority Google did this so it could move a shortcut icon for AI Mode right into the search bar, putting it right in the front of Chrome users. It's the digital equivalent of following that old real estate idiom, "Location, Location, Location." Additionally, the old "G" logo is placed on the left of the search bar, and the old "Search or type URL" phrase written in the search bar is replaced with "Search Google or type URL." Another alternative search bar design being tested to put the AI Mode shortcut right in front of the user. | Image credit-Android Authority Google also tested another look for the Chrome search bar. On this variant of the design being tested, the Google Lens and voice search shortcut icons found under the search bar had another shortcut added, this one for incognito mode. You might call this the "Heisenberg" icon for its resemblance to Walter White in Breaking Bad . In this version, the "G" logo is absent from the search bar, and the wording used inside the bar is the previously used text. Both different looks for the Chrome search bar were found in beta version 139.0.7258.32 of the Chrome browser for Android. Neither search bar being tested with an AI Mode shortcut appears on my Pixel 6 Pro running Android 16 QPR1 Beta 3. In my case, I'm only running version 138 of the Chrome app which explains why I'm not seeing the search bars being tested by Google. Eventually, Google will replace the current search bar on the Chrome app for Android since whichever new one it selects should drive more users to AI Mode and help Google defend its search bar business from getting attacked by what the company sees as AI interlopers.

Google launches AI Mode in search across India
Use text, voice, or photos Since voice and visual searches are very popular in India, AI Mode supports questions through text, voice or images. You can simply tap the microphone icon to speak your question—ideal for long queries or when you're on the move. You can also snap or upload photos using Google Lens to ask detailed questions about what you see. For example, if you receive a new plant and want care advice, just take a photo and ask AI Mode: 'What's this plant? How do I repot it and care for it?' AI Mode will identify the plant and provide step-by-step guidance along with helpful links. You can then follow up with questions like, 'Where should I place it at home for best growth?' Helping you explore the best of the web AI Mode helps users find exactly what they're looking for, including the subtle details, by displaying relevant web content in various formats. This creates new opportunities to discover useful information online. The system is built on Google's quality and ranking standards and uses new techniques to improve accuracy. When AI Mode is unsure, it will show standard search results instead. As an earlystage AI product, it may not always be perfect, but Google is committed to continuous improvement. Launching AI Mode as an experiment in Labs allows Google to gather user feedback and make the experience better over time.

Google adds Gemini 2.5 Pro and Deep Search to AI Mode in Search: Details
Google has introduced a series of updates to its AI Mode in Search, adding three new features aimed at expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities. Two of the upgrades are being rolled out exclusively to paid subscribers in the United States, while a third feature is now accessible to all AI Mode users in the country. Announced through a company blog post on Wednesday, the enhancements include access to the Gemini 2.5 Pro language model, a new Deep Search functionality for more detailed queries, and an AI-powered agent that can contact businesses to obtain pricing and availability information. The Gemini 2.5 Pro model allows users to handle complex queries related to mathematics, coding, and logical reasoning directly within the Search interface. In addition to generating responses, it can also provide relevant links for further information. However, the feature is only available to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers who have opted into the AI Mode trial through Search Labs. To activate it, users must manually select the model from a dropdown menu, as the default option remains a more general-purpose AI. Deep Search, the second feature powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro, is designed to manage nuanced queries that require a broader or deeper information sweep. For example, questions involving relocation, education, or travel planning, such as assessing neighbourhood amenities in a particular area, can be addressed with detailed AI-generated reports. Google notes that this mode may be particularly useful for users looking into academic research, financial planning, or itinerary design with specific preferences. The third feature marks the arrival of agentic capabilities in AI Mode. Users conducting searches related to local businesses may now see a 'Have AI check pricing' button. Upon tapping, the AI will pose follow-up questions to refine the request and then initiate phone calls to businesses on the user's behalf. Once the information is gathered, the system can share the results via SMS or email. This calling agent is available to all AI Mode users in the US and is intended to streamline the process of obtaining real-time information from businesses. Google claims the functionality could help reduce time spent on manual enquiries and assist businesses by connecting them with potential customers more efficiently.

Google rolls out AI-powered business-calling feature, brings Gemini 2.5 Pro to AI Mode
Google is rolling out an agentic AI-powered business-calling feature to all users in the United States, the company announced on Wednesday. The tech giant is also enhancing Google Search's AI Mode by bringing its Gemini 2.5 Pro model to the search experience and introducing deep research capabilities. The new business-calling feature uses AI to call local businesses on your behalf to collect information about availability and pricing. The idea behind the feature is to help you access information without having to actually pick up the phone and talk to someone. Google began testing the feature back in January with users who opted into the company's Search Labs experiments. To get started, you need to search for something like 'pet groomers near me,' and you'll see a new option in the results to 'Have AI check pricing.' From there, you answer a couple of questions to receive information about appointments and services from different local businesses. For example, you will be asked which type of pet you have, which services you need, and when you need the service. A Google spokesperson told TechCrunch in an email that every call to a business begins by announcing that it's an automated system calling from Google on behalf of a user. It's worth noting that Google faced backlash a few years ago for a similar business-calling feature that simulated human speech, as some users were concerned that the company was misleading people into thinking they were speaking with another human. Following the backlash, Google said its AI would identify itself as a robot when placing these calls. The new business-calling feature is starting to roll out to all Search users in the United States, with higher limits for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. Google is also supercharging AI Mode, the Google Search feature that lets you ask complex and multi-part questions via an AI interface, with Gemini 2.5 Pro for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. The tech giant says the model excels at advanced reasoning, math, and coding questions. Subscribers will be able to select the 2.5 Pro model from a drop-down menu in AI Mode. As for the new 'Deep Search' feature in AI Mode, Google says it will save subscribers hours by conducting hundreds of searches and issuing reasoning across differing pieces of information to create a comprehensive and fully cited report in minutes. Google notes that Deep Search is useful for in-depth research related to jobs, hobbies, or studies. The company says it's also useful in instances where you're making big life decisions, like buying a new house or seeking assistance with a financial analysis. Since its launch earlier this year, Google has been building out AI Mode with additional capabilities as it continues to take on popular services like Perplexity AI and OpenAI's ChatGPT Search. For example, Google last month rolled out the ability to have a back-and-forth voice conversation with AI Mode. In May, Google introduced a shopping experience in AI Mode to allow you to view product visuals and other AI-powered guidance that leverages product data. Google Search's new feature lets AI call businesses for you
TL;DR Google is bringing Gemini 2.5 Pro to AI Mode in Search. Deep Research is also coming to AI Mode. All Search users can now use AI to call businesses without picking up a phone. Following last month's announcement of Gemini 2.5 Pro going stable, Google's most intelligent AI model is heading to Search. It also looks like Search is getting a couple of new features to help out with research and obtaining information from businesses. In a blog post, Google revealed that it is rolling out Gemini 2.5 Pro to AI Mode in Search. Although Gemini 2.5 Pro is Google's most advanced AI model, it won't be selected by default. You'll be able to access the model from a drop-down menu in the AI Mode tab. As the tech giant explains, Gemini 2.5 Pro excels at reasoning, math, and coding. However, the default model is built for providing fast, all-around help. Also coming to AI Mode is Deep Research, the tool Google describes as its most advanced research tool. When using Gemini 2.5 Pro, you'll see the Deep Research option in the prompt field. By activating Deep Research, you can ask more sophisticated queries and get back more detailed responses. Gemini 2.5 Pro is coming to AI Mode starting today, while Deep Research will start rolling out this week. The AI model and search feature will only be available to AI Pro or AI Ultra subscribers who have opted into the AI Mode experiment in Labs. However, free Search users aren't being completely left out in the cold. Google also announced that it's integrating a new agentic capability into Search. This agentic capability will allow any Search user to use AI to call businesses without having to pick up a phone. Through this AI calling feature, you'll be able to get pricing and availability information from said business. All you have to do is search for something like 'pet groomers near me' and there will be a 'Have AI check pricing' option in the results. According to the Mountain View-based firm, AI calling is starting to roll out now in the US. However, those who have AI Pro or AI Ultra will have higher limits. There's no word on when this feature will roll out to other markets. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ .
