Meta and Oakley partner on new AI glasses: What to know

Meta (META) and Oakley have teamed up to create new performance artificial intelligence (AI) glasses. Yahoo Finance Tech Editor Dan Howley breaks down the details. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Asking for a Trend here. Meta and Oakley collaborating to deliver a new category of performance AI glasses. Yahoo! Finance's Dan Howley is here with more. Dan. That's right, Josh. Meta announced, uh, today that they are launching the Oakley Houston line, uh, of kind of AI sunglasses, basically. Uh, they're, they've got Patrick Mahomes as one of the, the leading spokespeople, uh, who's advertising for this. And, uh, essentially, it's more or less the same as you would get out of the, the Ray-Ban meta sunglasses where you, you can speak to an AI assistant. Uh, you have built-in cameras, you have built-in, uh, speakers, so you, you can listen to music, uh, that directly into your ears. Uh, but it's the, the new style, it's the, the Oakley Houston style, uh, of sunglasses. So you're going to get that, that new look, uh, new design, uh, potentially bringing a, a new market. They're, they're basically saying that this is great for sports. Uh, you can ask things like, if you're golfing, what the wind direction and speed are, uh, and it'll give you the, the information on that so that you can adjust your shot. I don't know anything about golf, so I'll assume that that's good to know. Um, and the, the prices rather high though. The, the limited edition version is starting out at $4.99. And then the regular version, uh, will be $3.99. So that's a lot of cash for some shades, though Oakleys obviously aren't cheap, Ray-Bans aren't cheap either. So, if you want to get the AI element here, and this is all part, uh, of Meta's push into AI smart glasses. The, the thinking here is that Meta is looking for the next type of big product after the smartphone. They are leaning more into smart glasses. Uh, Google, obviously, also in there as well, Apple, reportedly, uh, in there. Some people think that it'll just be, uh, a peripheral for the smartphone, others like Meta seem to think it will be that gadget. So we'll just have to wait and see if more people, uh, go ahead and purchase these types of devices. Meta's already said they sold millions of units of the Ray-Ban, though. So it looks like there is a, a rabid audience and with, with the Oakleys, it might be more, uh, people who are into the, the sports lifestyle that might want to grab these.
