Samsung Nears Wide-Ranging Deal With Perplexity for AI Features
(Bloomberg) -- Samsung Electronics Co. is nearing a wide-ranging deal to invest in Perplexity AI Inc. and put search technology from the artificial intelligence startup at the forefront of the South Korean company's devices. Billionaire Steve Cohen Wants NY to Expand Taxpayer-Backed Ferry Where the Wild Children's Museums Are Now With Colorful Blocks, Tirana's Pyramid Represents a Changing Albania The Economic Benefits of Paying Workers to Move NYC Congestion Toll Brings In $216 Million in First Four Months The two companies are in talks to preload Perplexity's app and assistant on upcoming Samsung devices and integrate the startup's search features into the Samsung web browser, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The firms have also discussed weaving Perplexity's technology into Samsung's Bixby virtual assistant, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private. Samsung is planning to announce the Perplexity integrations as early as this year, the people said, with the goal of including the service as a default assistant option in the Galaxy S26 phone line that's slated to launch in the first half of 2026. However, the specific details haven't been finalized and could still change. The tech giant is also expected to be one of the biggest investors in a new round of funding for Perplexity, the people said. The startup is in advanced discussions to raise $500 million at a $14 billion valuation, Bloomberg News has reported. The broad tie-up may help Samsung reduce its reliance on Alphabet Inc.'s Google and pave the way for it to work with a mix of AI developers, similar to Apple Inc.'s strategy for its devices and services. For Perplexity, the arrangement would mark its biggest mobile partnership to date and follows a recent integration deal with Motorola. Representatives for Samsung and Perplexity declined to comment. The two companies entered discussions about a partnership earlier this year, Bloomberg News reported in April. In recent weeks, the two sides met in South Korea, leading to them closing in on an agreement, the people said. Samsung and Perplexity have also discussed building an AI-infused operating system and an AI agents app that can tap into functionality from Perplexity and a range of other AI assistants, the people said. Apple has also shown interest in working with Perplexity. The iPhone maker has discussed using Perplexity as an alternative to Google Search as well as a substitute for ChatGPT integration in the Siri voice assistant, Bloomberg News has reported. 'We've been pretty impressed with what Perplexity has done, so we've started some discussions with them about what they're doing,' Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of services, said during recent testimony at a Google antitrust trial. It's unclear how Perplexity's relationship with Samsung, one of Apple's fiercest rivals, would affect that. --With assistance from Shirin Ghaffary and Yoolim Lee. Volusia County Schools Deploys ZeroEyes AI Gun Detection Platform to Strengthen Campus Safety
Florida District Adopts Proactive Security Technology to Protect Students and Staff Against Gun-Related Threats PHILADELPHIA, May 22, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- ZeroEyes, the creators of the first AI-based gun detection video analytics platform to earn the full U.S. Department of Homeland Security SAFETY Act Designation, today announced that its AI gun detection and intelligent situational awareness technology has been deployed by Florida's Volusia County Schools (VCS) to proactively protect students and staff from gun-related violence. According to data from the ZeroEyes Gun Violence Research Center, 40.4% of analyzed gun-related incidents in Florida occurred on K-12 campuses. VCS has added ZeroEyes to a multi-layered security strategy that includes safe school officers at each school, as well as rapid communication protocols, Centegix badges for emergency alerts, and single-point entry at all facilities. The adoption of ZeroEyes' AI gun detection technology adds another critical layer of protection to VCS's safety program. 'Our goal is to be a trailblazer for school safety in Florida,' said Dr. Carmen Balgobin, Superintendent of Volusia County Schools. 'After seeing the Daytona Beach Police Department's success with ZeroEyes, we conducted a thorough evaluation of the technology. We began piloting it in a few of our schools and quickly recognized the critical value it provides. We want our students to focus on learning, building friendships, and preparing for their futures, rather than worrying about their safety.' With more than 60,000 students and 8,000 employees across nearly 70 traditional schools, VCS is the 14th-largest school district in Florida and the largest employer in the county. The district's diverse campuses span a variety of settings, from beachfront communities to wooded areas and urban centers. ZeroEyes' AI gun detection and intelligent situational awareness software layers onto VCS's existing digital security cameras. If a gun is identified, images are instantly shared with the ZeroEyes Operations Center (ZOC), the industry's only U.S.-based, fully in-house operation center, which is staffed 24/7/365 by military and law enforcement veterans. If these experts determine that the threat is valid, they dispatch alerts and actionable intelligence — including visual description, gun type, and last known location — to first responders and school staff as quickly as 3 to 5 seconds from detection. 'Every school should be a place where students and staff feel safe and protected,' said Mike Lahiff, CEO and co-founder of ZeroEyes. 'Volusia County Schools is taking a leadership role in setting new standards for campus safety, and we are proud to work with a district that emphasizes proactive security solutions to help protect its students and staff.' About ZeroEyes ZeroEyes delivers a proactive, human-verified AI gun detection software solution that integrates into existing digital security cameras and helps to mitigate mass shootings and gun-related violence by reducing response times, providing actionable intelligence with images and delivering clarity among chaos — ultimately saving lives. ZeroEyes' patented solution has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as a promising anti-terrorism technology and was the first video analytics technology to receive full SAFETY Act Designation. Founded by Navy SEALs and elite technologists, ZeroEyes dispatches accurate and real-time actionable intelligence about the illegal brandishing of a gun near or in an occupied area or building, to local staff and law enforcement with an image of the shooter(s) and location of the threat, as quickly as 3 to 5 seconds from the moment the gun is detected. The ZeroEyes team also provides tech consulting, installation assistance and practice drills for active shooter events to enhance safety at schools, corporate and government facilities. Headquartered in the Greater Philadelphia area, the company's affordable and effective gun detection solution has been adopted by the US Department of Defense, leading public K-12 school districts, colleges/universities, healthcare facilities, commercial property groups, manufacturing plants, Fortune 500 corporate campuses, shopping malls, big-box retail stores and more. Amazon's foldable laptop leak shifts Apple's rumored launch window
Huawei MateBook Fold. | Image credit – Huawei These past few days, we got a glimpse of what's coming soon – not way down the road, but stuff that feels like the near future. If you caught the Google I/O keynote, you probably saw what I mean: new AI tools for videos, smooth real-time translation, even something called Artificial Pokémon Intelligence and a bunch more cool on the hardware front, Huawei just dropped its MateBook Fold laptop, which has a folding screen. When open, you get a massive 18-inch display, but fold it up and it is about the size of a 13-inch laptop. Apple might be cooking up something similar and now, another big player could be jumping in. Amazon is reportedly developing its own foldable laptop. This project hasn't officially kicked off yet, but if all goes well, it could hit mass production by late 2026 or 2027. If that timeline holds, Amazon might actually beat Apple to market with this type of device. Apple's competitors in the large-sized foldable device market may not be limited to Huawei. My research indicates that Amazon is also internally developing a similar product, which has not yet officially kicked off. If development progresses as planned, it is projected to enter… — 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) May 20, 2025 According to this latest leak, Apple's foldable laptop/tablet plans seem to be pushed back, now expected around 2027 or 2028, even though earlier rumors suggested a late 2026 or early 2027 course, Apple rumors are almost always a mixed bag, so nothing's set in stone. But one thing's clear: Apple is definitely working on a foldable laptop. With Amazon jumping in, too, foldable laptops could really be the next big other details have leaked yet and one big question is what operating system Amazon will choose – Windows or Fire OS? The same goes for Apple – will it run macOS or iPadOS? We've got a while to wait before seeing these in real life, but expect more news as the timeline moves closer. Huawei, for example, went with its own HarmonyOS 5 for its foldable laptop. This is actually the first time Huawei is using its in-house OS on a PC. Originally, HarmonyOS launched on Android devices, but after losing access to Microsoft Windows back in March due to US sanctions, Huawei shifted to using its own system for foldable laptops like Huawei's new model – and what Apple and Amazon's versions might end up looking like – definitely look sleek and stylish in pictures. But I'm not totally sold on how practical one will be – especially when it's folded. The full open-screen mode with a separate keyboard seems promising, but when folded, the software has to be flawless to avoid weird glitches from accidental touches or other issues. I'll need to try it myself to be sure, but for now, I'm still a bit on the fence about foldable laptops. What do you think?

Nvidia CEO Urges US to Lower Barriers to $50 Billion China Arena
Nvidia Corp. chief Jensen Huang called on the US to ease restrictions on the export of AI technology to China, or risk losing out on billions of dollars in revenue to up-and-coming rivals such as Huawei Technologies Co. Huang echoed warnings from some corners of Washington about the need to propel US AI technology by lowering export barriers intended to curtail the rise of a geopolitical rival. China alone will account for a $50 billion opportunity in 2026, Huang told reporters at Computex in Taipei. If American tech providers like Nvidia aren't allowed in, local customers will just spend that money elsewhere, he said.
