Federal judge says voice-over artists' AI lawsuit can move forward
A federal judge in New York has allowed a lawsuit to move forward from two voice-over artists alleging their voices were stolen by an AI voice startup. The judge dismissed artists Paul Skye Lehrman and Linnea Sage claims that their voices were subject to federal copyright. But claims from the artists of breach of contract and deceptive business practices, as well as separate copyright claims alleging that the voices were improperly used as part of the AI's training data, will, however, move forward. California-based Lovo Inc. had asked for the case to be dismissed entirely. The company has not yet responded to the BBC's request for comment. The judge's decision comes after a flood of cases from artists against artificial intelligence companies alleging misuse of their work to train AI models. The artists' attorney, Steve Cohen, has called the decision a "spectacular" victory for his clients, saying he was confident a future jury will "hold big tech accountable". Lawyers for Lovo had called the artists' allegations a "kitchen sink approach" saying the artists' claims failed to make an actionable claim against the company. The artists, a couple living in New York City, filed a proposed class action lawsuit in 2024 after learning alleged clones of their voices were for sale via Lovo's text-to-speech platform Genny. The couple claim they were separately approached by anonymous Lovo employees for voice-over work through the online freelance marketplace Fiverr. Lehrman was paid $1200 (around £890). Sage received $800 (almost £600). In messages shared with the BBC, the anonymous client can be seen saying Lehrman and Sage's voices would be used for "academic research purposes only" and "test scripts for radio ads" respectively. The anonymous messenger said the voice-overs would "not be disclosed externally and will only be consumed internally". Months later, while driving near their home in New York City, the couple listened to a podcast about the ongoing strikes in Hollywood and how artificial intelligence (AI) could affect the industry. This episode had a unique hook – an interview with an AI-powered chatbot, equipped with text-to-speech software. It was asked how it thought the use of AI would affect jobs in Hollywood. But, when it spoke, it sounded just like Mr Lehrman. "We needed to pull the car over," Mr Lehrman told the BBC in an interview last year. "The irony that AI is coming for the entertainment industry, and here is my voice talking about the potential destruction of the industry, was really quite shocking." Upon returning home, the couple found voices with the names Kyle Snow and Sally Coleman available for use by paid Lovo subscribers. They later found Sage's alleged clone voicing a fundraising video for the platform –while Lehrman's had been used in an advertisement on the company's YouTube page. The company eventually removed the voices, saying both voices were not popular on the platform. The case is now set to move ahead in the US District Court in Manhattan.

Why Do We Still Need to Talk to the Dead?
Two years after Andy O'Donnell's father died of Alzheimer's in 2021, O'Donnell decided he wanted to hear his voice again. He downloaded some videos of his father from Facebook, edited out other voices, and then uploaded to an A.I. voice platform the pure audio of his father talking. Then he copied in the text of the Lord's Prayer — something he'd heard his father recite hundreds of times in his life — and 'The Night Before Christmas,' and asked the artificial intelligence to create an audio file of his father reading both poems. 'After getting over the initial shock of hearing the incredibly accurate representation of his voice, I definitely cried,' he said, 'but it was more of a cry of relief to be able to hear his voice again because he had such a comforting voice.' There was no feeling of eeriness one might associate with hearing voices from the dead, he said. And when he shared his recording with his siblings, they all had a similar reaction. 'It definitely aided us in our grieving process in a positive way.' O'Donnell, who lives in Montgomery, Ala., then experimented with recording A.I. speaking in his father's voice with simple words of encouragement for his family members. O'Donnell, now 50, was raised Catholic and believes in some form of life after death, but not necessarily the traditional conception of heaven that he was raised with. But even though he knew this was not his father speaking to him from beyond the grave, it remained a powerful experience. 'I don't know that it brings closure but it definitely brings a measure of comfort to hear his voice again,' he said. A belief that our loved ones are still accessible in some form after death is one that's found in nearly every culture around the globe, from Japanese Buddhists to the Gullah people of South Carolina. In the Hebrew Scriptures, Saul tried to outlaw the practice of employing mediums to speak to the dead, but in time, he violated his own prohibition, secretly visiting a medium to contact Samuel, who had anointed him the first king of Israel. The desire to reach out across the divide between life and death remains one of the most primal desires we have. The A.I. 'griefbot' is just the latest iteration of that desire, often involving technology in some form, and based on a fundamental belief in life after death. According to a Pew Research report from 2023, over half of American adults said they had been visited by a dead relative, and 30 percent said they had talked back. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Fake AI voice impersonating Secretary of State Marco Rubio contacts foreign ministers and US officials
An imposter used a fake AI voice impersonating Secretary of State Marco Rubio to contact senior U.S. officials and foreign ministers, according to a report. The security breach involved voicemails, sent via the Signal messaging app, and text messages to 'at least five non-Department individuals, including three foreign ministers, a U.S. governor, and a U.S. member of Congress,' a diplomatic cable, obtained by The Washington Post, stated. The impostor, whose identity is unknown to U.S. authorities, was able to mimic Rubio's voice and writing style using AI-powered software, an unnamed senior official told the newspaper. The Independent has contacted the State Department for comment. Authorities believe the impostor was attempting to manipulate government officials 'with the goal of gaining access to information or accounts,' the State Department's cable, dated July 3, said. 'The actor left voicemails on Signal for at least two targeted individuals and in one instance, sent a text message inviting the individual to communicate on Signal,' the cable also said. In mid-June, the impostor created a Signal account under the display name: ' which is not a real email address. The State Department said it would carry out 'a thorough investigation and continue to implement safeguards' to prevent the incident from happening again in a statement to The Post. White House chief of staff Susie Wiles was the target of another impersonation attempt in May after her phone was breached. An impostor got hold of Wiles's contacts and sent messages and calls to high-profile contacts. 'Nobody can impersonate Susie. There's only one Susie,' President Donald Trump said at the time. The Rubio security breach took place in the wake of the Signalgate scandal, where a journalist was inadvertently added to a group chat with military leaders and members of the Trump administration. In that group chat, which included Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared minute-by-minute plans of sensitive military operations in Yemen. Hegseth also shared details of an upcoming military strike in Yemen in a second Signal chat group which included his wife, brother and personal attorney, a report the following month revealed. It later emerged that the President's former National Security Adviser, Mike Waltz, had added Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, to the group. 'I take full responsibility. I built the group,' Waltz said at the time. 'It's embarrassing. We're going to get to the bottom of it.' Waltz was ousted from his national security role, which has been taken up by Rubio in the interim. Waltz is due to appear before the Senate next week for his confirmation hearing to be named U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Security experts have warned against using Signal to discuss government business and while the app is encrypted, it can be hacked. In a 2023 memo, the Defense Department prohibited the use of Signal and other messaging apps, including WhatsApp and iMessage, when discussing non-public information.
