Chris Taylor proves to be a difference-maker for Angels in win over Mariners

Angels second baseman Chris Taylor throws to first base after forcing out a Seattle Mariners runner during the Angels' 5-4 win Friday night at Angel Stadium. (Eric Thayer / Associated Press) Chris Taylor hadn't done much at the plate since the Angels signed him nearly two weeks ago. The 34-year-old veteran utilityman scuffled at the plate like he had when wearing Dodger blue — and joined the Angels at the front end of a five-game losing streak. Friday night at Angel Stadium, Taylor put together his best game so far — going two for three with a game-tying RBI double in his first multi-hit performance of the season (his first since Sept. 27). Advertisement Taylor also scored the decisive run in the fifth inning on a single from Nolan Schanuel to lift the Angels to a 5-4 win over the Seattle Mariners. In the bottom of the sixth, Seattle center fielder Julio Rodriguez robbed Taylor of a two-run home run to dead center field. In his first plate appearance in the third, Taylor scored on a single from Zach Neto to tie the score 1-1. The Angels put together one of their better performances at the plate. They combined for seven hits and struck out just seven times. With their third win in four games, the Angels (29-33) are three games back of second-place Seattle (32-30) and 5½ games behind AL West-leading Houston (35-28). Advertisement Catcher Travis d'Arnaud connected for a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his second of the season. Kyle Hendricks didn't have his best outing, giving up four runs on eight hits over six innings, but he did earn his 100th career win. Ryan Zeferjahn and Reid Detmers pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth, respectively, and closer Kenley Jansen tossed a scoreless ninth for his 13th save. Detmers hasn't given up a run — across eight appearances — since May 17. Will Jacob deGrom play tonight against Tampa Bay Rays? Latest update on Texas Rangers star's injury report (June 5, 2025)

Tonight at 7:35 pm ET, the Texas Rangers will take on the Tampa Bay Rays and many are curious about whether Jacob deGrom will be pitching. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Recent news gives fans hope he might take the mound in this important game. Jacob deGrom's potential return to the mound tonight Jacob deGrom, the Rangers' star player, might play tonight against the Rays, according to the latest team updates. He had elbow surgery in 2023 and missed a lot of time, but came back strong last year. In 3 games, he had a 1.69 ERA and 14 K's in 10.2 IP. His fastball was clocked at 97.3 mph so he's still got it. On June 1, he had a scare in a game against the Cardinals and threw 6 balls in his first 7 pitches. Trainers checked on him, but he stayed in and pitched six innings, allowing just one run. Manager Bruce Bochy said deGrom can handle small issues and still perform well. The Rangers are being careful with him, watching his pitch count to keep him healthy. If he pitches tonight, he could make a big difference for the team. Also Read: Rangers' pitching strategy and team dynamics They're 4 games behind the AL West-leading Mariners at 29-31. DeGrom's ability to keep runners off base with a 0.98 WHIP is tremendous. But other pitchers like Nathan Eovaldi are dealing with injuries, so deGrom is even more critical. The team is focusing on keeping him healthy by limiting tough innings, not just total pitches. Bochy said deGrom's experience makes him special, even as a fifth starter. Tonight, he'll face Taj Bradley, who has a 3.00 ERA, so the Rangers' bats need to help out. The team hopes deGrom can lead them to a win and keep their playoff dreams alive. Fans are excited to see if the two-time Cy Young winner can shine again and push the Rangers closer to the postseason. As the game approaches, all eyes are on deGrom. His health and performance could shape the Rangers' season. Fans are rooting for him to stay strong and lead the team to a victory tonight.
