Tennis: Sinner rehires the fitness coach he fired for playing a role in his doping case - Omni sports
Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner has rehired Umberto Ferrara as his fitness coach nearly a year after firing him for his role in the top-ranked player's doping case. The move comes after Sinner recently removed fitness coach Marco Panichi and physiotherapist Ulises Badio from his team. "Umberto has played an important role in Jannik's development to date, and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level,' a statement from Sinner's team said Wednesday. Last year, Sinner tested positive twice for a trace amount of an anabolic steroid in March; the case wasn't made public until August, shortly before the U.S. Open, which he ended up winning for the second of his four Grand Slam titles. He initially was completely cleared, based on the defense that he accidentally was exposed to the banned substance, Clostebol, via a massage from his then-physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi. Sinner said his fitness trainer at the time, Ferrara, purchased a product in Italy and gave it to Naldi for a cut on Naldi's finger. Naldi then treated Sinner while not wearing gloves. Sinner then fired Naldi and Ferrara, and Ferrara was hired briefly by Matteo Berrettini, another Italian player. The World Anti-Doping Agency appealed the exoneration, and Sinner agreed to serve a three-month ban that ended right before the Italian Open in May of this year. Sinner, who won Wimbledon this month, will return to action at the Cincinnati Open next month as he prepares to defend his U.S. Open title. Cycling: Van der Poel drops out of Tour de France with pneumonia - Omni sports
The Tour de France lost one of the 2025 edition's leading riders Tuesday when Mathieu van der Poel pulled out with pneumonia, his team Alpecin confirmed. Van der Poel is the top one-day rider in cycling and while he is too large physically to win a mountainous Grand Tour, he lit up the first 10 days of this 21-day slog in the first section in the north. The 30-year-old Dutchman won stage two in Boulogne to claim the overall leader's yellow jersey and kept it until stage five. But his heroic failure against massive odds-on stage nine wrote a page of cycling folklore as his 'all or nothing at all' attitude pushed him to go for broke over 150km, being caught just 700m from the line in Chateauroux. The 2023 world champion was taken to hospital on Monday, after cold symptoms worsened. "Mathieu had been showing symptoms of a cold for several days, but yesterday afternoon his condition deteriorated significantly. In the evening, he developed a fever and was taken to Narbonne hospital for tests," the Belgian team said. "Medical tests revealed that Mathieu was suffering from pneumonia. In consultation with the medical staff, it was decided that he cannot continue the race. His health is the priority." Van der Poel won Paris-Roubaix and Milan-San Remo in 2025 and is a multiple champion at cyclocross and mountain biking. "This one hurts a lot," he said on Instagram after his team's announcement. Race leader Tadej Pogacar said on Sunday he was getting over a cold that had affected half the peloton. "It's all the ice packs against the heat and the air-conditioning," Pogacar said of the nasty cold that has dogged Tour de France riders throughout the race. Stage 16 is a 171.5km ride starting in southern city Montpellier before a culmination atop the iconic Mont Ventoux at 1,910m altitude. Tennis: Alcaraz withdraws from Montreal event for Wimbledon recovery - Omni sports
World number two Carlos Alcaraz, a five-time Grand Slam singles champion, has withdrawn from next week's ATP Canadian Open in Toronto to recover from Wimbledon, organizers said on Monday. The 22-year-old Spaniard lost to top-ranked Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final earlier this month in a bid for his third consecutive crown in the grass-court classic. "I'm really sad to have to miss the National Bank Open in Toronto," Alcaraz said in a statement. "I tried my best to be ready for the tournament as it's one I really enjoy playing, but it comes just too soon for me as I recover after Wimbledon. I wish the event well and look forward to being back on the Canadian courts next year." Alcaraz had his best Canada run in 2023, falling to American Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals. "It's disappointing to lose a player of Carlos' quality, as we know our fans were looking forward to watching him," tournament director Karl Hale said. "Although he has been on the scene for a while, he's still at the beginning of his career and there will be plenty of opportunities for Canadians to see him again in the future." American Sebastian Korda, the world number 33 struggling with a leg injury, and Poland's 38th-ranked Hubert Hurkacz, fighting a knee injury, have also withdrawn. Defending 200m champ Haughey out of swimming worlds with injury - Omni sports
Four-time Olympic medallist Siobhan Haughey pulled out of the World Aquatic Championships in Singapore with a back injury on Monday, leaving the Hong Kong swimmer unable to defend her women's 200m freestyle title. The 27-year-old Haughey won freestyle silver in the 100m and 200m at the Tokyo Games in 2021 and took bronze in the same two events in Paris last year. "I have pulled out of the world championships in Singapore due to an ongoing back injury," Haughey posted on social media on Monday. "I'm sad to miss out on the opportunity to compete against the best in the world, but right now I have to do what's best for me," said Haughey, who took a four-month break from the sport at the beginning of this year and has only competed once since. "As elite athletes, we're trained to push through the pain and fatigue to keep going," she wrote. "Yet at certain moments, the brave and hard thing to do is to take care of your body and wait patiently. Luckily I have an incredible team supporting me." Haughey also won the 200m freestyle at the Doha world championships last year. She had been entered in the 100m and 200m free at the World Aquatic Championships in Singapore, where the pool swimming events will take place from July 27 to August 3. Tennis: Injured Draper takes time out as he targets US Open - Omni sports
Jack Draper has withdrawn from Masters 1000 tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati after injuring his arm as he focuses on getting fit for next month's US Open. Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic have also pulled out of the Canadian Open, which starts on July 27. The Cincinatti Open begins on August 7 and wraps up on August 18, six days before the start of the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year. Both tournaments are Masters 1000 events, the level below the four majors. World number five Draper, who was knocked out in the second round at Wimbledon by Marin Cilic, said his injury was not serious and he would be fit for the US Open in New York. "After Wimbledon I picked up an injury in my left arm, nothing serious, but I have to make sure it recovers fully for the rest of the season," he said on X. "Unfortunately, I won't be able to compete in Toronto and Cincinnati... See you in NYC!"
