YSRCP alleges large scam behind land allotments in Vizag

Visakhapatnam: YSRCP Visakhapatnam district president KK Raju alleged that there is a large scale land scam behind allotment of prime lands in Visakhapatnam to the benamis of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. Speaking to the media at the party office here on Tuesday, he mentioned that Naidu has personal benefits behind allotting lands worth thousands of crores of rupees to various private companies at throwaway prices in Visakhapatnam. He demanded that these land allotments should be cancelled with immediate effect. Neglecting the development of North Andhra, KK Raju alleged that conspiracies are being hatched to snatch valuable government lands away from the region. As soon as the NDA government came to power, prime lands were being looted in North Andhra, he remarked. The YSRCP district president pointed out that Naidu is in the process of allocating lands worth thousands of crores in North Andhra region to his people and benamis. Further, Raju wondered that Naidu is showing special love for Lulu Mall and added there is a huge corruption behind the land allotment of 13.74 acres to the mall which is worth Rs 3,000 crore at a cost of just Rs 1.5 per sqft for 99 years. The YSRCP district president opined that it is very clear that Naidu has been allocating lands by expecting some kind of return. After the coalition government came to power, more than four acres of RTC land at prime locality in Vijayawada was allotted to Lulu Mall. There is definitely a quid pro quo behind these deals, he commented. Further, Raju stated that the AP government announced that Sattva Developer is said to be providing employment to 25,000 people by investing Rs 1,500 crore. 'In fact, Sattva Developers does not directly provide employment to anyone. Only the IT companies set up in the venture provide employment. The government not only allotted land to Sattva at subsidised price but also provided additional benefits in the garb of investment subsidy, electricity subsidy, and SGST exemption under AP IT and GCC Policy 4.0. The government should explain how it is providing subsidies under the policy to a real estate company that is only developing an IT park,' demanded the YSRCP city president.

Sri Lankan Cricketers Seek Court's Intervention In Tax Dispute

Sri Lankan cricketers have sought the intervention of Court of Appeal following a personal income tax dispute with the game's governing body, SLC and the Department of Inland Revenue (IRD). The cricketers, both men and women, went to the court in March, wanting the court to rule that they are not employees of SLC but individual service providers in terms of the tax liability. The likes of Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, women cricketers Chamari Atapattu and Anushka Sanjeewani made the court plea for their recognition as individual service providers. The SLC lawyers were supportive of the cricketers' position. However the Solicitor General's Department argued that after signing contracts with the SLC, they are deemed employees under the Inland Revenue Act. When the case was heard on Tuesday, the parties came to an interim settlement, the lawyers said. This would mean that IRD would deduct Advance Personal Income Tax (APIT) from cricketers from June, while the IRD would put on hold the recovery of APIT for 2022/23 and 2023/24 until the conclusion of the case. The case would be next heard on November 6, 14 and 18, the lawyers said.

Sri Lankan Cricketers Challenge Income Tax Dispute, Reach Interim Settlement

Last Updated: Sri Lankan cricketers approached the Court of Appeal over a tax dispute. An interim settlement was reached; hearings continue in November. Sri Lankan cricketers have approached the Court of Appeal regarding a personal income tax dispute between Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the Department of Inland Revenue (IRD). Both male and female players filed the case in March, seeking a ruling that they are not employees of SLC, but rather individual service providers for tax purposes. Prominent players, including Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Chamari Atapattu, and Anushka Sanjeewani, requested the court to recognise them as individual service providers. SLC's legal team supported the cricketers' position. However, the Solicitor General's Department argued that by signing contracts with SLC, the players are considered employees under the Inland Revenue Act. During Tuesday's hearing, an interim settlement was reached. As part of the agreement, the IRD will deduct Advance Personal Income Tax (APIT) from the cricketers from June onwards. Meanwhile, the recovery of APIT for the 2022/23 and 2023/24 fiscal years will be suspended pending the conclusion of the case. The next hearings are scheduled for 6, 14, and 18 November, according to the lawyers. First Published: June 04, 2025, 14:02 IST
