Acing the New GRE: What Indian students should expect from the shorter format
– Yatharth Gulati The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a globally accepted entrance test for master's, MBA, and some PhD programmes, especially in the US and Canada. For Indian students, it plays a vital role in graduate admissions and scholarships. To take the test, students must register at Key changes in the GRE Format The GRE has undergone a significant transformation with a new shortened format, streamlining the testing process while retaining its core structure and scoring system. The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) now includes just one task, 'Analyze an Issue, which is to be completed in 30 minutes, as the 'Analyze an Argument' section has been removed. 'Both the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections have been reduced to 27 questions each, to be completed in 41 minutes and 47 minutes, respectively. Importantly, the unscored experimental section and the 10-minute scheduled break have been removed. This means students will now undergo a continuous test-taking experience, making it essential to build stamina for sitting through the entire exam without breaks.' That was all for the changes. Despite these structural changes, the scoring remains unchanged, with Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning scores scaled from 130 to 170, and Analytical Writing Assessment better known as AWA is still graded on a scale of 0 to 6. The GRE still remains a section-level adaptive test, meaning that a student's performance on the first section of Verbal or Quant determines the difficulty level of the second section. Students still have the ability to review, skip, return to questions, and use the 'mark for review' feature within a section. Advantages for Indian students The revised GRE offers several key benefits for Indian test-takers. The shortened two-hour duration reduces test fatigue, especially for students juggling academic and work commitments. It is also beneficial for them as indian students mostly have the habit of taking 2-hour-long tests. Faster score reporting, now within 8–10 calendar days, allows for quicker application processing and decision-making. Indian students, who often excel in mathematics, will be able to leverage their quantitative strengths, especially since core concepts remain the same, but since the questions are reduced, students should strive for more accuracy. The removal of the unscored section and mandatory break also leads to a smoother, test experience, helping students maintain focus without unnecessary interruptions. New challenges to consider However, the new format introduces certain challenges that Indian students must prepare for. Since the questions are reduced and the scoring remains the same, each questions now carries more weightage, hence accuracy is the name of the game now. As the scheduled break has been removed, students will be required to maintain uninterrupted focus for nearly two hours, demanding greater mental and physical stamina. While only one essay is required in the AWA section, the 'Analyze an Issue' task will be designed to challenge intellectually; therefore, it will require strong argumentation and writing skills. Indian students who previously relied on templated essay formats will need to invest time in building their analytical writing abilities. Preparation tips and strategies To adapt successfully to the shorter GRE, Indian students should prioritise a focused and efficient preparation strategy. It is advisable to begin preparation 4–6 months in advance to get familiar with the new structure. For Quant, mastering fundamentals in algebra, arithmetic, geometry, and data interpretation is essential. For Verbal, emphasis should be placed on improving reading comprehension, sentence equivalence, and text completion skills. Using official ETS material, ensures familiarity with the actual exam structure. Regular essay writing practice using ETS prompts and reviewing model essays will enhance AWA performance. Students should practice with full-length mock tests simulating the new 1 hour 58 minute format to build stamina and perfect time management. And remember, since every question carries more weight, students should aim for accuracy over speed, avoiding careless mistakes. However, since there is no negative marking students should answer all the questions. (The author is the co-founder of Rostrum Education)

SHOCKING: Giant Octopus Attacks Young Boy at Texas Aquarium, Stares at Him from Glass Tank
In a shocking incident, an Octopus attacked a boy, 6, at the San Antonio Aquarium in Texas while the child was observing it at an interactive exhibit. The aquatic animal clung to her son and tried coming out of the glass tank, according to the boy's mother, Britney Taryn. Taryn said that the employees initially brushed off the incident when she yelled for help. The worker who walked over said the aquatic animal was "super playful" that day. Taryn then said it took nearly five minutes and three workers to get the Octopus from the boy, Leo. Taryn shared several videos and photos of the giant Pacific octopus on TikTok, describing the incident. The social media post went viral online, with two of them garnering over a million views. A few of the photos show purple bruises on Leo's hands. The mother said her son remained calm throughout the encounter. "It was suctioned onto him, and so I tried to help him get down and away from the glass. The octopus started to come out, up over the glass. My friend and I were not sure what to do. There were no employees around, so we started yelling for help. The employee came up and just said, 'Oh, she's super playful today.' And then he could not get the octopus off. He was very relaxed about the whole thing, so I was relaxed because he knows so much about animals, about octopuses", the mother told KSAT. Frilled octopus Alaska Octopus Projects The mother-son duo then checked on the aquatic animal after two hours, and it made eye contact with the boy. Taryn said the Octopus turned white and came too close to her child. Later, the mother contacted the Texas State Aquarium, and they suggested she reach out to the United States Department of Agriculture. She filed an animal welfare complaint with the department. The department informed her that Octopuses are not subject to AWA regulations because they are not covered under the Animal Welfare Act. Taryn contacted the aquarium several times to inform them about the visit and check if any changes had been made. The mother said she just wanted to know if the authorities moved the Octopus, or made any positive changes, since the aquarium never contacted her back. She also reached out to multiple aquariums in the country. "I'm just worried something worse is going to happen... I don't want anything to happen to any more kids, any adults. I don't want anything to happen to the octopus. So we're just trying to help. We would love to see [the octopus] at a rescue, where it can live out the rest of its life", the mother shared. Frilled octopus Alaska Octopus Projects The San Antonio Aquarium posted a video of the giant Pacific octopus on TikTok, several days after the incident. The video shows the employee touching the Octopus named Cthulhu and explaining its suction cup. "I promise it's not a cosmic cry for help... bruises or hickeys will disappear within seven to 14 days. They're not harmful or anything like that. If she really wanted to, she could totally bite me. She just loves people", the employee says in a video posted on TikTok. The official website of the San Antonio Aquarium lists an Animal Encounters exhibit. It is a place where children can touch and interact with several animals, including armadillos, penguins, octopuses, and lemurs. "Guests are encouraged to hand-feed some of our animals and pet them with a gentle two-finger touch on their back", the website stated.

‘Take humane approach in solving strays crisis'
THE country is facing a serious stray dog overpopulation problem, one that experts and activists say has escalated into a national issue requiring immediate action by the Federal Government. Animal welfare groups are sounding the alarm as the problem is straining their resources and raising serious ethical and animal welfare concerns. Social activist S. Shashi Kumar said the crisis reflected not only a breakdown in animal welfare policy but also a deeper failure of governance. 'This is no longer just a local authority issue, but a national crisis. 'What Malaysia needs is urgent federal intervention and structured collaboration with NGOs (non-governmental organisations), as practised in progressive nations like Singapore,' he said. Shashi said many local councils were using inhumane and outdated methods of stray population control, drawing criticism for what he described as the normalisation of cruelty under the guise of management. Yesterday about 200 people gathered outside the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in Putrajaya, calling for the government to stop the culling of stray dogs. Shashi presented a memorandum to a PMO representative, calling for a reform of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) 2015 and to look into their proposals for humane methods of managing the stray animal. Efforts taken by NGOs Scene from a recent protest outside Wisma Negri against the proposed culling of stray dogs in Negri Sembilan. — Filepic In April this year, a nationwide coalition of 39 animal welfare organisations submitted three proposals to Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) to address the stray population crisis for both cats and dogs, seeking balance in public safety and comfort, as well as to reform the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) 2015. The key components in the proposal were to enforce the Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return-Manage (TNVRM) programme in a large scale, set up government-run stray animal shelters nationwide and use hybrid approach to address public complaints on stray animal disturbance. Shashi, who is also Global Human Rights Federation president, said the current methods used by the local councils to manage strays, especially dogs, included culling. Killing animals, he said, was no longer acceptable in a civilised society. There is a need to have more compassion, modern governance and sustainable public policies in handling the matter, he added. Kalaivanan: NGOs should be allowed to bail out dogs for free as they are helping the government solve a problem. 'TNVRM strategy, which involves neutering the dogs and returning them to where they were picked up, can avoid the 'vacuum-effect' where removed animals are replaced by new unsterilised ones,' said Shashi. 'Government-operated shelters in every district can provide temporary care and protection for stray animals, serving as a long-term investment in public safety and health, as well as animal education and welfare.' He said that as some local councils have set up cat shelters, there should also be dog shelters. 'The third suggestion is a hybrid approach in handling strays that are reported as disturbance, specifically dogs. 'Local councils can work with animal welfare NGOs to assess problematic dogs, where the canines posing any risk can be removed from public spaces and sent to a shelter to be rehabilitated, while others in the same pack undergo TNVRM,' he said. Shashi said the proposals were supported by the 39 organisations. Most dog shelters in the country, he said, were currently run by individuals or community groups with limited financial means and minimal government support, if any. According to him, many of these shelters are on the brink of closure and unable to sustain the rising cost for food, medical care, and daily operations. Shashi describes the overpopulation of stray dogs a national crisis that demands urgent government intervention. 'Thousands of animals depend on these shelters for survival. Without immediate financial intervention, their lives will hang in the balance,' he said. StarMetro has reached out to the ministry and is awaiting its comments. Call for free bailout There is a nationwide movement called Stray Lives Matter, to end the abuse and killing of homeless animals. A campaign began in October last year, following a public outcry after a female stray dog in Terengganu named Kopi was shot dead by a Besut District Council officer during an animal control operation. The dog had previously gained Internet fame for a video showing her playing gently with a kitten. Public outrage escalated into legal action and calls for reform of the country's animal welfare laws through a full-fledged national movement. Also speaking on behalf of the coalition is Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia president R. Kalaivanan. Rajesh: It's crucial to amend AWA 2015 and remove any powers granted to local authorities to shoot and kill. In a media statement, he said one of the main barriers to rescuing stray dogs across the country was the bailout fees imposed by local councils, ranging from hundreds to thousands of ringgit per dog. He said NGOs should be allowed to bail out dogs for free as they were helping the government solve a problem in the community. 'While we are willing to help save the lives of these animals, the burden cannot fall solely on the NGOs and their shelters. 'It should be a shared responsibility between the government, NGOs and shelters. 'The government must take its fair share of responsibility in supporting animal welfare efforts, especially when it comes to financial backing and creating policies that enable NGOs to perform their roles effectively,' he said. NGOs, he said, must be given sufficient time to find shelters or permanent homes for rescued animals. 'We propose that NGOs be given at least 14 days to find suitable arrangements for each animal, ensuring that every rescued animal has a proper chance for rehabilitation and adoption. 'The overpopulation of stray dogs is caused by the local authorities' lack of management, and the solution seems to be inhumane methods including reactive culling of the animals,' he noted. Reform of AWA Shashi, who is also Selangor Furry Future Association president, is seeking amendments to AWA 2015 and an end to inhumane practices by local authorities in controlling the population of stray animals, especially dogs. While the Act offered a glimmer of hope in animal welfare, he said it had loopholes that needed to be amended. AWA 2015 contains 64 sections largely directed at pet owners and individuals who commit acts of cruelty or fail to comply with prescribed regulations, he said. While the Act emphasises responsible ownership and the prevention of animal cruelty, it lacks provisions that hold local council officers accountable for the inhumane capture or brutal treatment of stray animals, he pointed out. Vulnerable stray dogs continue to be abused or killed across the country for just wanting to live, he added. With the increasing number of stray dogs, Shashi said animal rescuers, independent feeders and shelter operators were working tirelessly under immense financial and emotional strain to care for the animals. 'Some stray dogs caught by local council dog catchers risk being mistreated or killed, if not adopted in time. 'Some local councils charge exorbitant fees to release captured dogs. 'This leaves the animal rescuers facing heartbreaking decisions concerning dogs' lives,' he said. According to lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan, certain provisions in AWA 2015 are vague, lhence it is used by the authorities in a manner not in line with the original intention. 'It also lacks some provisions needed in this age in line with latest developments. 'Section 30(1) and (2) read together has been construed by the authorities as allowing the shooting and killing of dogs.' He said that when this Act was proposed in Parliament in 2015, it was clearly stated that there would be no more shooting of dogs. 'Despite this, the authorities are still relying on the Act to shoot and kill stray dogs,' he said. 'The solution to this problem,' Rajesh said, 'is in amending the offending provision and removing any powers granted to local authorities to shoot and kill.' The Veterinary Services Department should be the only authority empowered to put dogs to sleep in humane ways, he said. 'Further, Section 34 of the Act grants powers to animal welfare officers in situations involving animals in distress. 'The Act allows an officer to destroy an animal at their own discretion, without requiring certification or confirmation from a registered veterinary surgeon. 'These are powers involving the lives of animals and ought not be a power that is delegated,' he highlighted. Rajesh said Section 4 of the Act provided for the establishment of the Animal Welfare Board (AWB), but noted that its membership, which meant to advocate animal welfare, remained limited in scope, such as head of agencies. 'To ensure meaningful representation, the board should entirely comprise members of civil society. 'It is crucial that the AWA 2015 undergo comprehensive reforms to address and correct these shortcomings,' he said.

Hulk Hogan dies: Hulkamania will run wild in heaven now
WWE star Hulk Hogan has died at the age of 71. (Photo: AP) It is the end of an era in WWE or World Wrestling Federation (WWF) as it was once called when we were growing up. For the quintessential 1980 and '90s, there was no bigger superstar than Hulk Hogan. No one knew him as Terry Gene Bollea, he as always Hulk Hogan to the world. A part of our childhood has come to an end on Thursday night when the shocking news of Hulk Hogan's death filtered in on Florida as the WWE Hall of Famer did at the age of 71. It was Hulk Hogan's 'Hulkamania' which gave birth to the biggest pro-wrestling event in the world these days – 'Wrestlemania' back in the 1980s. But Terry Gene Bollea wasn't always know as Hulk Hogan. It was Vince McMahon Senior who first identified his talent and back in 1979 he was know as 'Sterling Golden'. McMahon Sr told his son and former CEO of WWE McMahon Jr that 'Sterling Golden' will not work with the WWF fans and thus, the 'immortal' Hulk Hogan was born. The legendary Hulk Hogan ❤️💛 — WWE (@WWE) July 24, 2025 Hulkamania first ran wild in AWA After his initial stint in WWF, Hogan had walked away to the more local AWA wrestling before Vince McMahon Jr went hunting for the one true superstar who could put WWF on the world map. 'Hulkamania' first ran wild in the AWA before Hulk Hogan's much publicized return to WWF in 1984. Hogan defeated the Iron Sheik on his return to the WWF to be crowned champion for the first time and didn't look back then. Banking on Hogan's charisma and star power, Vince McMahon Jr bet it all, in fact, mortgaged his house and properties according to his daughter Stephanie McMahon to make 'Wrestlemania 1' a success. WWF champion Hulk Hogan teamed up with 'Mr T' to take on 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper and 'Mr Wonderful' Paul Orndoff as the main event for 'Wrestlemania 1' in front of a sold-out crowd at New York's Madison Square Garden in 1985. Hogan and 'Hulkamania' ran wild and 'Wrestlemania' and WWF never look back from that. Hulk Hogan won it all Hulk Hogan won at least six WWE championships in his illustrious career and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005 and reinstated there in 2018 after controversially thrown out due to alleged 'racial' slurs at blacks in USA. 'He was a trailblazer, the first performer who transitioned from being a wrestling star into a global phenomenon,' McMahon Jr said of Hogan. WWE would not be where it is today without the larger-than-life characters that compete in the ring … and few, if any, loomed larger than Terry 'Hulk Hogan' Bollea. He was the archetype of what it meant to be a 'Superstar' – a global sensation that inspired millions to work… — Triple H (@TripleH) July 24, 2025 'Hulkamania' represented true American sentiment Before the world saw Eric Bana, Edward Norton or Mark Ruffalo as Marvel's famous character – 'The Hulk' – it was Hulk Hogan who was the true superhero. He was the US flag-waving hero with a horseshoe moustache that America needed in years that came after Cold War and preceded the Gulf War. Crowds all over the world, even India, went wild when he ripped off his T-shirt in the ring — a trademark move — revealing his chiselled, toned body. Hogan also turned into celebrity outside the wrestling world, appearing in numerous movies and television shows, including a reality show about his life on VH1, 'Hogan Knows Best' before foraying into Hollywood. Many other WWE wrestlers like 'The Rock', John Cena and Dave Bautista have made the move to Hollywood but Hulk Hogan was the first pioneer who achieved the feat in making a successful transition. He crossed over into movies and television as well. He was Thunderlips in the movie 'Rocky III' with Sylvester Stallone in 1982. Hulk Hogan's in-ring achievements Hulk Hogan incredibly slammed and beat Andre 'the Giant' at WrestleMania III in 1987, and the WWF gained momentum. It was Hogan's move which later inspired the likes of Lex Luger, who slammed Yokozuna, but this win will remain iconic in WWF history. His feud with the late 'Macho Man' Randy Savage carried pro wrestling and WWF to greater heights. The WWE and the World Championship Wrestling (WCW) were battling for ratings supremacy in 1996 and it was Hogan tilted things in WCW's favor with the birth of the 'Hollywood Hulk Hogan' character and the formation of the 'New World Order' (NOW) with Razor Ramon and Kevin Nash. The wrestling world has lost a true legend. His contributions to our business are immeasurable and for that I am appreciative. Thank you, Hulk Hogan. — Undertaker (@undertaker) July 24, 2025 He returned to the WWE in 2002 at the 'No Way Out' PPV event and became a champion again. His match against The Rock at WrestleMania 18, a loss during which fans cheered for his 'bad guy' character, was seen as a passing of the torch. For the fans in India, Hulk Hogan remains the number one pick in the 'WWE Trump Card' we used to have in our childhood. We will all remember his with 'Watcha gonna do, when Hulkamania runs wild on you!'

Hulk Hogan's 10 Most Memorable Moments In Wrestling
Hulk Hogan died at 71. Here are his most memorable moments. Hulk Hogan died at 71 on Thursday morning after cardiac arrest. The embattled, controversial and iconic Hall of Famer is arguably the greatest pro wrestler of all time depending on how you define a great pro wrestler. Even without the hardcore wrestling bona fides that befit his less famous contemporaries like Terry Funk, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Roddy Piper and Ric Flair, very few people on planet earth will hear the name Hulk Hogan and not know who he is. Hogan's almost 50-year career in the wrestling business gave way to countless memorable moments. Some polarizing, some timeless, but every one of them was all the above. Hulk Hogan was fired from WWE after pursuing a now-iconic role on Rocky III as Thunderlips. The role launched him into superstardom and made him an instantly recognizable figure, not to mention a draw for Verne Gagne's Minnesota-based wrestling promotion AWA. Hogan left AWA to join Vincent Kennedy McMahon's WWE, where he won his first world championship within months of signing. Hogan's victory over the Iron Sheik is considered the birth of Hulkamania and the beginning of the WWE's national takeover of the wrestling business. Ahead of what would be his most important main event, a tag team match alongside Mr. T at WrestleMania I, Hulk Hogan and Mr. T went on a back-breaking promotional tour to promote WWE's make-or-break showcase. In addition to hosting Saturday Night Live the night before WrestleMania I, Hogan and Mr. T's most infamous stop came during an appearance on Belzer's show Hot Properties. The smarmy talk show host clearly didn't understand pro wrestling, nor did he take it seriously. This clearly miffed Mr. T, who antagonized Belzer throughout the interview. Hogan did his best to remain professional throughout. While demonstrating a basic wrestling hold on Belzer, however, Hogan accidentally choked out the cocky host who went limp and passed out onstage, hitting his head. A clearly disoriented Belzer quickly hopped to his feet and threw to commercial break. The incident would cost WWE a $400,000 settlement after Belzer sued, but this is a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things considering the free press this caused, which helped lead to a successful WrestleMania pay-per-view. Hulk Hogan and WWE's finest hour (to this point) came at the first WrestleMania, WWE's Super Bowl. Compared to what WrestleMania has become, the main event was nothing to write home about. Hogan and Mr. T won via disqualification in a tag team main event. This was the only tag team main event in WrestleMania history until WrestleMania 39, and one of the few WrestleMania main event matches where a world title was not on the line. Still, WWE's accumulation of talent from territories around the country led to a successful event that would change the face of pro wrestling, making the scripted sport mainstream at the expense of regional territories. Ask a wrestling nerd what the best match of WrestleMania III was, and they'll mansplain Randy Savage vs. Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat. Ask WWE's business manager what the most important match of WrestleMania III was, and they'll tell you Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant. WrestleMania drew a record-breaking crowd—a disputed 93,173 fans in the Silverdome, who witnessed quite possibly the most immortal moment in WWE history. If WrestleMania I was a celebration of a new mainstream wrestling product, WrestleMania III was the coronation. In the night's main event, Hogan slammed Andre the Giant en route to successfully defending his WWE Championship, and wrestling was never the same. One of Hulk Hogan's most polarizing moments came at the end of WrestleMania IX. In a post-Hogan era, where Hogan and WWE seemingly parted ways, the event struggled to sell tickets in Las Vegas' Caesar's Palace. As WWE's biggest show of the year drew closer, WWE had no choice but to break the red-and-yellow emergency glass case and book Hulk Hogan. This was Hogan's ninth consecutive WrestleMania, and it was memorable for a host of reasons. Hogan showed up sporting a gnarly black eye after a Jet Ski accident, an incident that is the subject of pro wrestling lore as some fans believed the injury was due to a physical altercation with Randy Savage. Savage playfully fed into these rumors while on commentary during the event. Hogan and Brutus the Barber Beefcake failed to win the Tag Team Titles in another WrestleMania tag team match featuring Hogan with a DQ finish. But this was far from the most memorable moment of the evening. Hogan resurfaced following Yokozuna's heel win over Bret Hart to capture his first WWE Championship. After Mr. Fuji, Yokozuna's manager, challenged Hogan to a world title match on behalf of Yokozuna, Hogan jumped at the opportunity and beat the superheavyweight in a matter of seconds. Fans in Caesar's Palace went crazy for the moment live, but many hardcore fans who had grown tired of Hogan's act consider this—well—a black eye on the history of WrestleMania. As WWE unceremoniously moved on from Hulk Hogan in the '90s, this time for real, Hogan took his talents to WCW where he got a new lease on life. The massive signing was celebrated with a red-and-yellow parade at Disney-MGM Studios, and Hogan's WCW pay-per-view debut featured the likes of Mr. T and Shaquille O'Neal. Hogan won his debut, capturing the WCW World Heavyweight Championship in a win over Ric Flair. Perhaps the most infamous heel turn in pro wrestling history came at Bash at the Beach in 1996. The bloom had come off the rose as far as Hogan's drawing power as a babyface. After over two decades of telling young fans to say their prayers and eat their vitamins, the world had become more edgy and cynical in the '90s. As had pro wrestling. Hogan shrewdly leaned in to American counterculture by aligning with heel outsider faction the New World Order, switching out the red and yellow for black and white. In 2025, whitemeat babyface had a similar heel turn, causing ubiquitous debates of whether or not this was better than Hogan's heel turn almost 20 years later. It wasn't. During Hulk Hogan's comeback in 2002, he initially returned as the charter member of the NWO that he was during the group's rise in the '90s. But the Hogan fatigue that forced him to turn heel in 1996 was replaced with fan nostalgia inside the SkyDome, where he headlined WrestleMania VI against the Ultimate Warrior. Though Hogan was supposed to be a heel, fans in Toronto vehemently cheered Hollywood Hogan, causing somewhat of a double-turn within the match. Hogan would eventually succumb to The Rock, but received a curtain call from the stadium in quite possibly the most unfollowable match in WrestleMania history. Hulk Hogan's nostalgic run in 2002 was punctuated with his first WWE Championship win in nine years. Now wearing his vintage Hulkamaniac colors, Hollywood Hulk Hogan defeated Triple H at WWE Backlash, becoming one of the oldest active wrestlers to win the WWE Championship in history. Hulk Hogan's final appearance on WWE television was memorable for all the wrong reasons. During Raw's debut on Netflix in Inglewood, Hulk Hogan marched out to Intuit Dome to a chorus of boo's. The broadcast was supposed to be a celebration of WWE's past, present and future, but fans in the historically Black enclave still had not forgiven Hogan for his racist remarks made during a leaked sex tape in 2015. Despite a clumsy apology tour, Hogan was never able to completely shake his darkest moment. His otherwise incomparable legacy will forever be stained by his hateful remarks about Black people.
