Is Aamir Khan's ‘dream project' Mahabharat going to be his last film? Sitaare Zameen Par actor reveals TRUTH

Ever since Aamir Khan revealed about starting work on his next big dream project inspired by the Indian mythological tale Mahabharat, fans cannot keep calm. The actor, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming movie Sitaare Zameen Par, plans to begin work on this magnum opus right after. Sometime back, Mr. Perfectionist had opened up about retiring. And now, in a recent interview, he yet again hinted at Mahabharat being his last project. Yes! You heard that right. Aamir Khan might retire after working on Mahabharat. No, we are not saying this, but Aamir Khan himself hinted at this in a recent podcast with Raj Shamani. The actor was asked if he is about to make his last film, then what does he want it to be about? The actor paused for a while, and what he replied will leave you surprised. Replying to this question, Aamir admitted that it's his dream to make Mahabharat. He further revealed starting work on it right after Sitaare Zameen Par 's release. The Laal Singh Chadha star further added that after working on Mahabharat, maybe he will get the feeling that now he has nothing left in him to do. He cannot do anything after this, as the material of this film is going to be like that. 'Layered hai, emotion hai, scale hai, har cheez hai usme. Har cheez jo duniya me hai wo aapko Mahabharat me milegi,' added the star. He further quipped, 'I hope that I die with my shoes on, lekin kyuki aap puch rahe to ek hi cheez hai jo main soch sakta hu. Shayad ye karne ke baad mere andar wo emotion aaye ki ab iske baad mujhe kuch nahi karna, shayad.' While talking to The Hollywood Reporter a while back, Aamir spoke about Mahabharat. "That's one of my biggest ambitions," he stated, adding that just the writing process will take a few years. Aamir said that he will be joining the team as one of the producers. When asked if he will be acting in the film too, the Dangal actor stated, "We'll see who we should cast based on who's appropriate for which part." When asked if he would be taking over the director's chair for the magnum opus, the actor stated that Mahabharat is one film that can't be told in one go. While it's early to say if he will helm the movie, he divulged that the story will be told across multiple films. Hence, for that, they will need multiple directors if they have to plan it within a certain timeline.

Aamir Khan's 'six to seven films flopped in a row' — Here's how he overcame early failures to build a $770 million fortune

Aamir Khan may be seen today as one of Indian cinema's most respected and bankable stars, but his journey to success was not easy. Decades before he was known as Bollywood's 'Mr. Perfectionist', Aamir struggled to survive in the industry and was even called a 'flop actor' early in his career. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now However, what happened next was a dramatic change, and now his net worth is an incredible $770 million, making him one of the world's richest actors. How a Last-Minute Casting Decision Changed Everything The turning point came with the 1990 romantic drama 'Dil', where Aamir starred opposite Madhuri Dixit. Interestingly, this film happened only because director Indra Kumar could not get dates from his regular actor, Anil Kapoor. As actor Adi Irani once shared in a chat on Filmymantra Media, Anil suggested Indra direct a small film in the meantime, which led to 'Dil'. At that time, Madhuri was also struggling, as several of her films were not doing well or were being stopped halfway. What was meant to be a small project became a huge hit, giving new life to both Aamir's and Madhuri's careers. The media's doubts quickly disappeared as Aamir started to prove himself with a series of successful films. A Legacy Built on Fearless Choices After 'Dil', Aamir Khan's career took off as he chose a mix of big commercial hits and films with important social messages. With landmark films like 'Raja Hindustani', 'Lagaan', 'Rang De Basanti', 'Taare Zameen Par', '3 Idiots', 'PK', and 'Dangal', he showed himself to be an actor who was not afraid to take risks or challenge the usual way of doing things. Today, as reported by News 18, Aamir's estimated fortune is more than $770 million (around Rs. 6,000 crore), making him not just a giant in Indian cinema but also a globally known figure. From being called a failed actor to earning international respect, Aamir Khan's journey is a powerful example of resilience, reinvention, and strong self-belief.

Aamir Khan Once Dubbed ‘Flop Actor', Today He's Worth $770 Million: ‘Don't Take Him'

Today, Aamir Khan is not only a Bollywood icon but a global star. His net worth is estimated to be around $770 million, placing him among the richest actors in the world. Aamir Khan is one of Bollywood's most successful stars today, but his journey to the top wasn't smooth. In fact, following his breakout debut in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), Aamir delivered seven back-to-back flops, earning him the dreaded label of a 'flop actor" before his major turnaround with the 1990 romantic drama Dil. Interestingly, Dil also starred Madhuri Dixit, who was undergoing a similar rough patch. Despite delivering a hit like Tezaab, Madhuri was also being written off due to several of her films either failing or being shelved midway. Actor Adi Irani, who featured alongside them in Dil, recently reflected on this forgotten phase during a podcast with Filmymantra Media. 'Six-seven films of his flopped in a row after Aamir Khan's first film. He was considered a flop hero… That was the case for Madhuri Dixit as well," he shared. Adi revealed that Dil only happened because director Indra Kumar couldn't get frequent collaborator Anil Kapoor's dates. Indra, who had earlier produced Mohabbat and Kasam with Anil, wanted him for his directorial debut Beta. But due to scheduling issues, Anil advised Indra to take on a smaller project in the meantime and that's how Dil came into being, with Aamir and Madhuri headlining it. 'Anil Kapoor told Indra Kumar, 'Make a small-budget film in the meantime. You'll also get experience being a director too,'" Adi recalled. Aamir Khan himself has often spoken about this phase. At a recent PVR event celebrating his films, he said, 'Back then, actors worked on 30 to 50 films simultaneously… I ended up signing 9-10 films at once. I was not happy. I would go home and cry." He added, 'The media dubbed me a 'one-film wonder.' Rightly so… I could see my career going down the drain. I was stuck in a swamp, unable to get out." But the massive success of Dil resurrected both his and Madhuri's careers. What followed was an era of dominance for Aamir, marked by critically acclaimed and commercially successful films such as Raja Hindustani, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, 3 Idiots, PK and Dangal. Today, Aamir Khan is not only a Bollywood icon but a global star. His net worth is estimated to be around $770 million (over Rs 6,000 crore), placing him among the richest actors in the world. From being considered a 'flop hero" to earning that title, Aamir's journey is nothing short of inspiring. First Published: May 30, 2025, 22:05 IST
