Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-Imagn Images REUTERS CHARLOTTE - The PGA of America only indirectly addressed a report that Rory McIlroy's driver was found to be non-conforming before this week's PGA Championship. SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio first reported on Friday that McIlroy had been forced to switch to a different driver, but the Masters champion has not spoken with the media since the event began. He was publicly silent again after Saturday's third round, during which he shot a 1-over-par 72 that left him tied for 49th place. PGA of America chief championships officer Kerry Haigh was hardly more illuminating on Saturday, confirming only that driver tests had been conducted on about one-third of the field pre-championship at Quail Hollow. The U.S. Golf Association tests driver heads randomly at PGA Tour events and major championships to determine whether their spring-like effect is conforming. Spring-like effect refers to the elasticity of the clubface that allows it to spring back upon impact with the ball, much like a trampoline. A driver that conforms one week could be non-conforming the next due to minute changes in the clubface as a result of the wear and tear of hitting balls. "Finding driver heads that have crept over the line of conformance is not an unusual occurrence, especially for clubs that are hit thousands of times over a long period of time," Haigh said in a statement. "The results are kept confidential to protect players, who are unaware the club has fallen out of conformance and not responsible for it falling out of conformance other than hitting the club thousands of times. "Players are simply asked to change heads if necessary, and all do without issue. To publicly identify players whose club did not conform can lead to that player being questioned unnecessarily. Neither the USGA nor the PGA of America have any concerns about player intent." McIlroy, who plays with a TaylorMade driver, won the Masters in a playoff in April to become the sixth man to win the modern grand slam of all four majors -- joining Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. But he has been out of sorts off the tee this week and languished 13 strokes behind leader Scottie Scheffler after Saturday's third round. Are his struggles related to the driver issue? Only he would know that. --Andrew Both, Field Level Media REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Mandatory Credit: Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images/File Photo REUTERS CHARLOTTE, North Carolina - Halfway leader Jhonattan Vegas set off in the third round of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club where inclement weather delayed the start of play and led to organisers sending players off in groups of three from split tees on Saturday. Moments before the first tee shot was scheduled to be hit at Quail Hollow the horn sounded, forcing players off the course and leading to a nearly 3-1/2 hour delay that shook up the day's format in an effort to get the round completed on Saturday. As a result, players set off from the first and 10th tees instead of everyone starting at the par-four first in pairs. Play began shortly before midday and LIV Golf's Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm both made quick starts to inch up the leaderboard and get within four shots of Venezuelan Vegas. U.S. Open champion DeChambeau, who finished runner-up at last year's PGA Championship, birdied his opening hole while twice major winner Rahm birdied two of his first three holes at a sunny and steamy Quail Hollow. World number 70 Vegas, riding high after firing consecutive under-par rounds for first time in 17 major championship starts, set off from the par-four first hole two shots clear of playing partners Matthieu Pavon and Matt Fitzpatrick. South Korea's Kim Si-woo, also two shots back, was playing one group ahead in the company of world number one Scottie Scheffler and Max Homa, who were both three shots off the pace. Masters champion Rory McIlroy, who made the cut on the number and was walking to the first tee when the horn sounded, began the day from the par-five 10th and nine shots adrift alongside defending champion Xander Schauffele and Chris Kirk. McIlroy has experience making comebacks at Quail Hollow where in 2010 he also trailed by nine and made the cut on the number but roared back on the weekend and went on to secure his first PGA Tour victory. Weather-hit PGA Championship to play third round off split tees

Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-Imagn Images REUTERS CHARLOTTE, North Carolina - The dangerous weather that delayed the start of play at the PGA Championship has forced organisers to send players off in groups of three instead of pairs and from split tees in an effort to get the third round completed on Saturday. The third round of the year's first major, where Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas leads by two, will start at 11:43 a.m. (1543 GMT), a nearly 3-1/2 hour delay from when the first tee shots was initially scheduled to be struck. Players will set off from the first and 10th tees at Quail Hollow Club instead of everyone starting at the par-four first. Masters champion Rory McIlroy, who made the cut on the number and is nine shots back of Vegas, was on the bridge headed toward the first tee for early tee time when the horn sounded to signal play was suspended. The Northern Irishman, who was set to head out in the second pairing with defending champion Xander Schauffele, was none too pleased as he slumped his head, turned around and grinned in disbelief while appearing to utter a profanity. About an hour earlier, practice at the year's second major was suspended for 17 minutes due to dangerous weather and those outside were instructed to seek shelter. Practice facilities re-opened after a second suspension that lasted about an hour. According to the forecast, there is a severe thunderstorm watch in the area until 12:00 p.m. ET while scattered showers are expected to exit the area around mid-morning and give way to partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. Intense rains pelted the course earlier this week and the soft conditions led to top players like Scottie Scheffler and Schauffele voicing their displeasure about how so-called mud balls impacted their opening round. Because players were not able to lift, clean and place their golf balls in the soggy fairways, the mud balls left some players with little control over where their next shot would go. The opening twosome of Max Greyserman and Sam Burns had yet to hit their tee shots.
