Rangers duo Thelo Aasgaard and Hamza Igamane set to miss Panathinaikos clash

Rangers are set to be without Thelo Aasgaard and Hamza Igamane against Panathinaikos after both failed to train the day before the crucial Champions League match. The Ibrox side trained on Tuesday morning ahead of their flight to Athens, where they hope to build on a 2-0 lead from the first leg and secure progress to the third qualifying round of the competition. Head coach Russell Martin said at the weekend that he hoped to have both Aasgaard and Igamane fit and available for the decisive game on Wednesday night but both were absent from Tuesday's session and appear to have lost the fight to be ready. Summer signing Aasgaard had picked up an injury in pre-season against Dunfermline and was rated as being close to fitness for last week's first leg at Ibrox but didn't make the matchday squad and it appears he is still struggling. Igamane came off the bench against Panathinakos but picked up a knock and was left out of Saturday's friendly against Middlesbrough. Martin had explained that the Moroccan striker, who has been linked with a move away from Glasgow this summer, had suffered a disrupted pre-season after visa issues delayed his return to the squad but had worked his way into a good condition. However, he thought it would be 'madness' to risk the forward in a friendly. Rangers travel to the Greek capital in confident mood after the home win and hope to build on the momentum from their first competitive match. Martin is expected to give a full update on player fitness and his plans for the match when he faces the media on Tuesday evening. I faced Thelo Aasgaard - here's what he'll bring to Rangers

Little did the former Rangers and Liverpool midfielder know that just two years later, the Norwegian internationalist would make the move to Ibrox. "He was at Wigan with Shaun [Maloney]," recalled Adam, speaking on behalf of Free Bets. "He's a good player. I think he just broke into the Norwegian national team as well. "We beat him that day, but yeah, he's a good player technically. I've seen him a few times, actually playing. "Luton getting relegated back to League One would financially have hurt them. So they've obviously sold him, and he's a talent. "He's a good age as well. He's a technical player who will be able to open passes and goals and assists as well. "It'll be interesting to see how he does at the top end of the pitch for Rangers as well." Read more: Aasgaard is a doubt to feature for [[Rangers]] in the first leg of the Champions League second qualifying round against Panathinaikos - but Adam reckons he can provide a spark under Russell Martin this season. "It depends on what you call a maverick," Adam responded to a poser on Aasgaard's playstyle. "What I will say is he's, he's hard working as well. He's a creative player, and Rangers will need that a lot this year because there will be a lot of teams where the low block and it's 4-5-1 might even be for 5-4-1 at times. "So they'll need that little bit of magic. Aasgaard, Lyle, Cameron, players like that will be able to open the door for you, for you as well to make things happen. "So yeah, good, good players that they need, but again, they have to hit the ground running quickly, and they need to win football matches."

I faced Thelo Aasgaard - here's what he'll bring to Rangers

The 23-year-old creative midfielder would suffer defeat on that day back in March of last year, a 4-2 loss to Fleetwood Town, but he would catch the eye of opposition boss Charlie Adam. Rangers blow as star misses training ahead of Panathinaikos

Russell Martin's side take on the Greek cracks at Ibrox tomorrow evening, the first leg of their Champions League second round qualifier. The squad took part in a training session this morning as they prepare for that huge clash, but new signing Aasgaard didn't take part. It is a blow for Martin who is short of options in the attacking midfield/wing areas, which he has been trying to add options in. Fellow new recruit Djeidi Gassama is not deemed ready for a start, meaning the likes of youngster Findlay Curtis and Oscar Cortes could compete for a spot. Speaking on Saturday, Martin confirmed the Norwegian international was 'touch and go' for the first leg but should be ready for the second. Read more: He said: "It's disappointing for him and for us. "He has been everything we thought we were getting and more. Since he has been in he has been incredible. "His understanding, his athleticism, the power he has, the technical capability, he really is an exciting player for us. "Unfortunately, it is a different level of intensity and it has been high demands in pre-season. "He has picked up a little something so he is going to be touch and go. "We hope he can be involved but if not then we are really hopeful he will be ready and raring to go for the second one." Rangers triggered a relegation clause to sign Aasgaard from Luton and are understood to have paid an initial fee of £3.5million. Add-ons could take the deal to £5m.
