An electric vehicle exploded and burst into flames in a Costco parking lot in Abbotsford Saturday afternoon, according to authorities. First responders were called to the big-box store on Sumas Way around 1:30 p.m. for 'reports of a vehicle explosion,' the Abbotsford Police Department said in a social media post, adding 'fortunately, no injuries have been reported.' Firefighters remained on scene for several hours, according to a statement from the City of Abbotsford. 'Crews arrived to a fully engulfed vehicle and were able to put out the fire quickly through the use of fire blankets and water, minimizing the spread to other vehicles,' a spokesperson wrote. 'Crews remained on site yesterday afternoon while the vehicle continued to cool so it could be transported off site.' The cause of the fire is under investigation. The parking lot and gas station were closed, but have since reopened.

‘It's alarming': 19 impaired drivers stopped in Abbotsford Friday night

Police highlighted a "particularly concerning" recent incident that wasn't part of Friday night's total, in which a 40-year-old woman was driving impaired on her way to pick up her child from school. (@AbbyPoliceDept / Police in Abbotsford say they stopped more than a dozen impaired drivers in the city Friday night. The Abbotsford Police Department said on social media Saturday that its Traffic Enforcement Unit and patrol officers had taken 19 impaired drivers off the streets in a single evening. 'It's alarming how many individuals continue to drive under the influence, despite the ease of finding a safe ride home,' police said in their post. They also highlighted a 'particularly concerning' recent incident that wasn't part of Friday night's total. On Thursday afternoon, a 40-year-old woman was arrested for impaired driving after crashing into a tree and getting stuck on a concrete median. 'She was found to be over three times the legal alcohol limit – and was on her way to pick up her child from school,' police said. Abbotsford police have been dealing with a surge in impaired driving this year. At the beginning of April, the department said traffic stops for alcohol and drug impairment had risen by 74 per cent in comparison to the same period last year. While some of that increase is due to more robust enforcement on the part of police, there also appears to be 'a significant rise' in impairment overall, said Sgt. Paul Walker, at the time. To raise public awareness, the APD has partnered with ICBC and Mothers Against Drunk Driving on a signage campaign to highlight the locations where officers have nabbed impaired drivers on a weekly basis. The bright red signs read 'Impaired driver caught here,' and include a prompt for witnesses to call 911. With files from CTV News Vancouver's Andrew Weichel

Teenage boy fatally stabbed inside Abbotsford park

Police respond to a stabbing in Larch Park on Sunday, May 25. A teenage boy is dead and a homicide investigation is now underway after a stabbing in Abbotsford Sunday night. The violence unfolded inside a park in a normally quiet neighbourhood. Abbotsford police were called to Larch Park after a report of a stabbing just after 7:30 p.m. 'Upon arrival, officers located a male youth suffering from critical, life-threatening injuries,' said Sgt. Paul Walker of the Abbotsford Police Department. Despite attempts by both bystanders and first responders to help him, he did not survive. Police say two youth suspects have been arrested nearby a short time later. 'Early indications suggest this incident to be targeted and not random,' said Walker. The Abbotsford Police Department's Major Crime Unit has launched an investigation and will be transitioning the case to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. 'We have three families that are grieving and going through unimaginable changes in their lives, both from the family of the deceased, as you can imagine, as well as the two families of the suspects that have been arrested today, these type of incidents have far reaching impacts in any community,' said Walker. Walker says it's too soon to determine what the motive may have been. 'Like always, when we have incidents involving youth, whether it's criminal, whether it's bullying…we are always working through those channels with the youth, through our officers that are involved in our youth every day, from our youth squad, like I mentioned, from our high-risk youth officers, from our officers involved in our different intervention programs,' said Walker. Walker was not able to say if or how the victims and suspects knew each other. 'There's a lot of questions that I'm sure the public would like answers to that we are working through to find answers to. We're very limited in cases like this, especially being a homicide investigation, but as well, where we have youth involved,' said Walker. He said he wasn't aware of which schools, if any, the teens were enrolled in. 'This is one of these unimaginable scenarios where these kids are going through now, they're going to know people, friends and family are going to know these kids. The word on the street is going to start traveling,' said Walker. He says the community has been deeply impacted. 'This was a nice Sunday evening. People were out in the community. People were walking on the sidewalks, using the park here behind me, and then all of a sudden, just after 7:30 p.m. numerous sirens, first responders showing up,' said Walker. Anyone who was near Larch Park between 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., or who may have dashcam footage from the area, is urged to contact the IHIT Infoline at 1-877- 551-4448. Larch Park and the stretch of Beck Road in front of it are expected to be closed for several hours Monday as the investigation continues.

Teen dies after reported stabbing in Abbotsford, B.C., park, police say

Police say a teenager has died after a reported stabbing at an Abbotsford, B.C., park Sunday night. The Abbotsford Police Department said officers responded to a report of a stabbing at Larch Park, located in the 2600 block of Beck Road, shortly after 7:30 p.m. PT. Officers found a male teen suffering from critical, life-threatening injuries, police said in a news release. He died despite efforts from bystanders and first responders to save his life, police said. Police said they arrested two suspects, also in their teens, and say early indications suggest the incident was targeted. Police have not released the ages of the people involved, only confirming that they're teenagers. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the investigation and is asking anyone who was near Larch Park between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday, or who has dashcam footage from the area, to contact them.
