Businessman fined for dropping a cigarette despite claiming he's not a smoker Abrar Ahmed was left with a substantial fine to pay Abrar Ahmed believes it's a case of alleged mistaken identity (Image: Supplied ) A father received a large fine after he was charged with dropping a cigarette in the street, which he claims wasn't his doing. Abrar Ahmed, from Crumpsall, received a letter from Manchester council in March telling him he owed £433 for littering on Devonshire Square, Ancoats. The businessman, who isn't a smoker and wasn't there, immediately challenged the fine with the town hall. It subsequently came to light that another person dropped the cigarette after a subject access request for the body-worn footage from the enforcement officer revealed it had been someone else. However, the fine has remained as when the case came before the Tameside Magistrates Court an appropriate interpreter was not provided, causing it to be adjourned, causing further distress to Mr Ahmed and his family. Mr Ahmed's brother-in-law, Zahor Hussain, who was speaking on his behalf, said: "His elder brother passed away from cancer in December, he's gone through absolute hell and back, as have the rest of our family. "This is not something he needs and he is at the end of his tether. Someone who is not a criminal, now has to go before the court. They are pursuing the wrong person." The body-worn footage shows the individual telling the enforcement officer that his name is 'Abrar Ahmed' and gives the same date of birth but an address in Bury. Article continues below Mr Hussain continued: "He doesn't smoke, he is a business manager and runs a food manufacturing business. This person was a taxi driver, and had parked up near to the Uber office. "My brother-in-law has difficulties speaking English. This man is speaking English, they are speaking over each other. He gave the same name and date of birth as Abrar, but gave an address in Bury. "The letter then came here, to my brother-in-law's address. He has never lived in Bury. The man in the footage is not my brother in law." Due to the fine, Mr Ahmed has been struggling with his mental health. "We feel like we have gone to hell and back. We shouldn't have to do this," he said. Since the fine, the family have sent the investigations team evidence, including images of the footage and Mr Ahmed. "We are extremely anxious and have been left with mental anguish and distress. We don't know what to do," Mr Hussain said. The next hearing has been scheduled for June to officially withdraw the fine. Mr Hussain explained: "We are not getting anywhere and it feels like smashing my head against a brick wall. It is a wrongful conviction - clearly they are two different individuals. We are being passed from pillar to post. How is that justified?" A spokesperson from Manchester City Council said: "We have been made aware of a case of mistaken identity involving Mr Abrar Ahmed who was fined for littering a cigarette after another individual allegedly provided false details to an enforcement officer. "Mr Ahmed has since provided evidence that suggests he was not at fault and our investigation officers have reopened the case withdraw the fine as soon as possible through the courts. Pakistan seal T20 series against Bangladesh with 57-run win
Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 57 runs in the second T20 international in Lahore to seal the three-game series 2-0. Opener Sahibzada Farhan was named Player of the Match after he top scored with 74 for the hosts, who won the toss at Gaddafi Stadium before posting 201-6. It was a fair fight back from Bangladesh to restrict the hosts after Hasan Nawaz recorded the best strike rate of the innings with an unbeaten 51 off 26 balls. Tanzim Hasan gave some respectability to the chase, which was reduced to 77-7, when, coming in at nine, the Bangladesh bowling allrounder added 50 off 31 balls. Abrar Ahmed's off-break spin was key to restricting the tourists as he claimed 3-19 off his four overs to help Pakistan to their first T20 home series win since December 2021. 'It feels very good … I didn't know it was three and a half years,' the Pakistan captain Salman Agha said afterwards of the end of the barren run. 'It was a complete performance, and that is way better than anything else. 'Everyone is loving the team environment where everyone can come and enjoy playing for Pakistan.' Pakistan, who won the first match by 37 runs at the same venue, brought in opener Sahibzada in place of Fakhar Zaman. The decision was fully repaid with six sixes and four fours recorded by the right-hander in his 41-ball innings. The match could not have got off to a worse start for Bangladesh with Shoriful Islam limping out of his first bowl. The left-arm seamer appeared to tweak a groin while fielding the ball in his follow-through and adds to a long list of absent pacers for the tourists. 'When Shoriful was injured, the momentum shifted,' the Bangladesh skipper Litton Das said. 'We have a lack of bowling, but we came back well because I would back our batters any day to chase 200 on this track. 'Whoever is batting well has to keep going, for 13 or 14 overs, but after four overs we didn't bat well and there were back-to-back wickets. 'In cricket, you have to do the basics, we don't do it at the moment.' Bangladesh had reached 44-0 in the fourth over of the chase before the collapse that ended their hopes of bouncing back from the opening defeat. Opener Tanzid Hasan struck 33 from 19 balls in the stand, but once he fell to the seam of Faheem Ashraf an inevitable end quickly formed. The last match is on Sunday, also in Lahore.

Farhan and Abrar star as resurgent Pakistan win Bangladesh series
LAHORE: Opener Sahibzada Farhan notched his maiden half century and spinner Abrar Ahmed grabbed three wickets to guide Pakistan to another convincing 57-run win over Bangladesh in Lahore on Friday. Farhan smashed a 41-ball 74 and Hasan Nawaz unbeaten 51 off 26 balls to help the home team post 201-6 before Abrar grabbed 3-19 to keep Bangladesh to 144-9 in 19 overs, with the last man Shoriful Islama unable to bat due to injury. Pakistan, who won the first match by 37 runs at the same venue, take an unassailable 2-0 lead with the final match on Sunday, also in Lahore. The win also gives a kickstart to Pakistan's new white-ball head coach Mike Hesson appointed earlier this month to stem a slide which saw them win just three of their last 13 T20s before this series. Bangladesh raced to 32 in the first two overs but openers Parvez Hossain (eight) and Tanzid Hasan (19-ball 33 with five boundaries and a six) fell within two runs of each other. From 46-2, Bangladesh slumped to 56-5 with Abrar dismissing Tohid Hridoy (five) and Jaker Ali (nought) off successive deliveries while pacer Hasan Ali had skipper Litton Das for six. Tanzim Hasan, who topscored with a career best 31-ball 50, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 23 off 17 balls, added 33 for the eighth wicket but it was too late, too little. Pakistan's first T20 home series win since December 2021 delighted skipper Salman Agha. 'It feels good, I didn't know it was three and a half years ago that we won a series at home,' said Agha of Pakistan's last win over the West Indies at home. 'This is what I want, we should always have players who can come in and replace anyone, any captain would love that,' said Agha, praising the new coach. 'It's been a few days and we are loving the environment, credit to Hesson. He has managed to gel the team really well and built a nice environment, he has done that very quickly.' Bangladesh skipper Litton Das rued loss of wickets in cluster. 'There were back-to-back wickets and in cricket you have to follow basics, sometimes you don't follow the basics that cost you,' said Das. 'We still have a game to comeback strongly.' Earlier, Pakistan posted a consecutive 200-plus total with Farhan and Nawaz ably supported by Mohammad Haris whose 41 came off 25 balls after the home team won the toss and batted. After losing fellow opener Saim Ayub to a run out for four, Farhan put the innings on a solid footing with a 103-run second wicket stand of 54 balls with Haris. The Farhan-Haris duo smashed Bangladesh bowlers to all corners, with Farhan hitting six sixes and four boundaries while Haris's knock had two sixes and four boundaries. Farhan was finally caught by Litton Das off leg-spinner Rishad Hossain in the 12th over. His previous best of 39 was against Australia in Dubai in 2018. Nawaz gave a final polish to the innings by hitting three sixes and two boundaries as Pakistan added 40 in the last five overs. Agha fell for 19 and Shadab Khan made seven. For Bangladesh Tanzim finished with 2-36 and Hasan Mahmud took 2-47.

The Pakistan top order set up a 201 total for the second straight time and seven of the eight bowlers took wickets to dismiss Bangladesh for 144 in 19 overs. Bangladesh slips after fiery start Tanzid Hasan scored all 32 runs in the first two overs of the chase but was out for 33 to a stunning reflex catch at short fine leg by Abrar Ahmed. By the end of the powerplay, Bangladesh was 54-3 and reeling from some splendid catches. Abrar trapped Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali leg before wicket off successive sharp googlies. At the halfway mark, Bangladesh was 78-7 and the inevitable was delayed only by No. 9 batter Tanzim Hasan Sakib, whose 50 off 31 was his maiden T20 half-century. He was the last man out as fast bowler Shoriful Islam couldn't bat after pulling up with a groin injury in his first over. Farhan lost the selectors' favor after four consecutive single-digit scores against Australia last year in the T20 series. But he forced his way back by topping the batting chart in the recent Pakistan Super League. He got an opportunity after first-choice opener Fakhar Zaman was rested for Friday's game. Luck favored Farhan when he was dropped off the third ball of the match before he scored. Saim Ayub was run out in the second over after Farhan refused the third run. Farhan got a second life after his half- century when Mehidy Hasan Miraz could not hold onto a sharp catch in the covers. Haris was caught at backward point in the 11th over, and Farhan was caught in the next over by Bangladesh captain Litton Das behind the stumps.
